Heads Up: Karma System Revamp!

    Beer Karma. It's been around since the early days of BeerAdvocate as simple way to acknowledge members for their contributions to this site and its community.

    It's always been a bit of mystery (by design), which has caused some confusion over the years. And, in the year 2022, the system is a bit boring and dated. So, I'm currently revamping the system to use our forum's achievement system, and then extending it to other member stats (beers, places, etc.). It'll be much more fun, engaging, transparent, and efficient (I get to disable a resource hungry cron job or two). And, when our big forum upgrade is finally complete, we'll have even more criteria and options to play with.

    Anyway. Under the new system, points will be attached to achievements (milestones) and you'll get an alert when you receive an achievement (meet the criteria). You'll also be able to view all available achievements and the ones you've been awarded.

    Once I'm done creating the base achievements, the following will occur:
    1. User titles will be temporarily disabled.
    2. Points will be temporarily wiped.
    3. I'll switch the new system on, which will then issue achievements and points for all criteria that you currently meet.
      1. Some of you will get a lot of alerts. Sorry. :grimacing:
      2. Achievements won't be back dated.
      3. You'll need to log in for most achievements to be applied.
    4. Once things settle, new user titles will be applied based on the new points structure.
    This also aligns with the recent launch of Profile Posts (for Society members) and Members in the navigation, where I'm putting more focus on our community.

    My goal is to launch it early in the new year, but wanted to give everyone a heads up.

    The points will be different for everyone, so comparing the old vs. new would be pointless.

    Based on testing today, I'm anticipating that those who are currently Poo-Bahs will remain Poo-Bahs.

    OMG read the before I am going to bed, now I won't be able to sleep. All that beer I drank and reviewed to become the poo bah I am today at risk....
    Seriously though, the threads created after this is applied will be epic. On a positive note, have a great Thanksgiving guys and hope you all enjoy the time with friends, family or just yourself.

    Sounds like quite an undertaking. Hope you don't get a lot of negative feedback. I've never been concerned about karma points. I like BA for the fact that it tracks my beer consumption and places visited for me. Happy Thanksgiving.
