Definitely agree. One of my favorite beer experiences is comparing the base and the barrel versions.

Was curious about “Munchiwine” too. Then realized the significance of the “i” location when reading the following…

BTW, Swiftwater makes Muncheez Truck, but it belongs in a different tread.

And a barrel aged version too.

    Happy New Year everyone!

First barleywine of the year is from Paradox brewery, it’s the “ay yup duck” rum barrel aged English barleywine at 11% abv and sold at the brewery only, inexplicably, in a 19.2oz can. So of course I’m solo doming this and feeling it.

I had a can of this in august on a stifling sweaty
Humid night. Tonight it’s a lot more seasonable with some football and some outstanding cheese selections and I’m in a lovely hotel lakeside in Lake Placid in the Adirondacks. This is solid enough and a real value purchase at 8 bucks (!) for a massive serving of barrel aged BW. It’s a little thin and fizzy but appealing especially if you’re a rum drinker.

Bissell Betwixt & Between BA Barleywine w/ Coffee. Really damn good. Tastes like caramel and cold brew. Balanced and smooth.

The English Barleywine is actually not one of my favorite styles to be honest. However, I enjoyed this one well enough, despite being a bit too sweet for my personal taste, as is usually the case with the style.

Jackie O's Brewpub - Rye Barrel Brick Kiln

English Barleywine aged in Rye Bourbon barrels, from America (12.7%).

Pours a deep, dark brown coloration with a small, fluffy head. Smells of rich caramel malt, toffee and rye bourbon, with notes of vanilla, oak and peppery spice, as well as hints of dark fruits and red berries, with notes of fig and raisin and redcurrant.

Taste is an excellent balance of very slightly roasted, rich caramel malt, toffee, butterscotch, chocolate, dark fruits/red berries, with notes of raisin, date, fig, redcurrant and cranberry, as well as a distinct rye bourbon presence, with notes of vanilla, oak and peppery spice. Finishes with a medium sweetness and some toffee, butterscotch, dark fruit and vanilla lingering in the aftertaste. Full mouthfeel with a rich body and low/medium carbonation.

While this is once again just a tad too sweet for my personal taste, I can hardly fault an English Barleywine for that, while the sweetness is quite mellow and not too cloying here, with more of a toffee, butterscotch than brown sugar character. The rye bourbon barrels also come through wonderfully, again being quite mellow without feeling to boozy at all, yet imparting rich notes of vanilla, oak and peppery spice.

It's that musty, earthy oak, peppery spice and hints of roasted malt and bitter chocolate which balance out the sweetness nicely here, while rich notes of dark fruit and red berries round this out very nicely. While I'm actually not a huge fan of the style, this is definitely one of the best examples of it that I've had. due to it's rich complexity and mellow balance, with a great body and mouthfeel as well.

Jackie O's does run sweet, but I love them! I don't think I've had one that I would call cloyingly sweet so far. Plenty of layers and nuances to keep interesting.

The first munichwine was from Private Press called A Silent Pursuit, released at the end of 2021. The description:
"Munichwine is a new sub-style of barleywine that I quietly created at Private Press throughout the pandemic. The genesis of this new beer style is rooted in my admiration for both barleywine and Munich malt. A Silent Pursuit aged in both bourbon and California grape brandy barrels, and reminds me of spirit-soaked bread pudding, topped with toasted almonds, and covered in a dark sweet cherry caramel sauce. I am excited to see how this new style develops both at Private Press and beyond."

I was lucky enough to a get a preview tasting of b2 of A Silent Pursuit last week, and the style is really evolving into something delicious. I had the Cellarmaker 9 Year Munichwine that @Beersnake1 tried, and enjoyed it, but it leaned sweeter than Private Press's version. I also had the Cellarmaker munichwine on cask with some bourbon soaked oak chips and it was definitely too sweet for my preferences. I think any brewery having a go at making a munichwine will have to contend with finding a way to balance that sweetness, and Private Press does it well via careful blending and amazing barrel character.

Well, I'm 11.5 months earlier to this thread in 2023 than in 2022...

Could not pass on this yesterday.
    Hi-Wire Rye Barrel-Aged Manhattan Ale
    [IMG]
16oz can stamped Batch 2347 10/04/22 poured into a teku glass at just above fridge temp 9.5% ABV per can. The beer pours opaque medium brown with mahogany highlights and meager light brown head. The head recedes to a pencil thin ring and tiny island of tiny bubbles. The aroma is moderate in strength featuring herbal notes, then cherry, sweet malt, and rye barrel. The taste is bittersweet malt with more herbal liqueur notes followed by cherry, orange peel and rye whiskey. Mild bitterness. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with average carbonation and a mostly dry finish. ABV is well hidden in the aroma and flavor with just a touch of heat on the finish. Overall, very good. The herbs and fruits really lead the way here with the malt and barrel being much less emphasized.

This is good, but not up to Bell's or Founder's Old Fashioned or Manhattan based BBA ales. Kind of disappointed because Hi-Wire does most styles great. Needs less herbal root influence and more rye whiskey / barrel, malt and fullness to be a contender...

    Cheers all!

Cocktail inspired beers can be hit or miss, but I found that I like Manhattans more often than not.
Nice glass, I'll be coming in with one of those tonight as well!

Updates on the upcoming EBF box has me reminiscing about the last one. This is an absolute all-timer for me, it checks all the boxes. Double barreled, extended barreling, mixed barrels, blended barleywine.

Just going to list some descriptors in no particular order. Raisins, booze, leather, toffee, different booze, chocolate, yet another different booze, and on and on and on...love this so much.

Not the right thread for it, but I'm so stoked for the Stout box. Gonna be epic!
