Saison with Walloon yeast and Citra hops, from Latvia (4.5%).

Pours a slightly cloudy, pale straw coloration with a large, fluffy, lasting head. Smells of doughy malt and spicy esters, as well as both estery and hoppy fruit notes of apple, apricot and papaya.

Taste is a great balance of doughy malt and fruity and spicy hops and esters, with notes of green apple, apricot, papaya and lemongrass, as well as some clove and nutmeg, with hints of grassy accents too. Finishes with a light tartness and bitterness, as well as some green apple, papaya and clove lingering in the aftertaste. Effervescent mouthfeel with a light body and medium/strong carbonation.

This makes for a very nice, modern saison with a great balance of esters and hops, feeling very crisp and refreshing, with a great carbonation and mouthfeel as well. I really like the mix of spicy esters and both estery and hoppy fruity notes here, with a strong, zesty and grassy lemongrass presence, finishing both tart and bitter. Overall, this makes for a very easy-drinking, yet flavorfull summer beer that I found rather enjoyable and makes me sad that I have so few beers left from this brewery.

Brewers Notes: Our curiosity continues with an intensely kettle and dry hopped Double IPA featuring a combination of Simcoe & Amarillo! The base of Twenty Nine is straightforward to allow the unique and intriguing characteristics of our house yeast to play with a big punch of Simcoe & Amarillo. We experience flavors and aromas of apricot, peach, grapefruit, and a very distinctive note of juicy tangerine. This beer is a beautiful example that given a similar set of ingredients, process and yeast vastly influence the character and presentation of a finished beer. Despite its focused and intense flavors, this Curiosity is supremely pillowy. A delectable treat, indeed

    Alaskan Smoked Porter
22oz bottle vintage 2022 poured into a perfect pint glass at fridge temp 6.5% ABV. The beer pours opaque medium brown in color with light brown head. The head recedes to a thin cap and leaves a little lacing. The aroma is moderate in strength featuring meaty, campfire smoke. The taste is strong smoke up front with lesser notes of dark chocolate and ashy roast in the background. Moderate bitterness. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with average carbonation and a mostly dry finish. Overall, straightforward and delicious.

    Cheers all!

Good afternoon, Weekenders! I'm back with a more proper review: Tilted Barn Spring, a farmhouse ale aged in oak foeders followed by tart cherries.

This is really good, but the cherries dominate, to the point that I'm not sure if the base beer is at all sour, or if all the tartness I'm getting is from the cherries. There is a light musty funk and a good amount of oak, but overall the beer is a bit lacking in complexity. That's not necessarily a bad thing, especially if you love cherries (I do!), but when I think of excellent mixed culture saisons, I want the lush, unique funk from Fox Farm, Hill Farmstead, or a number of Belgian breweries. This drinks more like a refreshing, crushable, slightly funky saison prominently featuring cherries.

My partner agrees. She's completely spoiled by our trips to Fox Farm, so for her, this beer is a big letdown. I don't think they were aiming for the same thing, so I think this beer is still definitely a success, but she and I are on the same page with what we personally want more out of this type of beer.

Saison with pink peppercorns, aged in Tokaji wine barrels, from Latvia (8.8%).

Initially pours clear, getting cloudier with subsequent pour and a deep golden amber coloration with a medium, fluffy head. Smells of doughy malt and a strong pink peppercorn aroma, as well as orange marmalade, lighter apricot and hints of oak.

Taste is a great balance of doughy malt and fruity and spicy notes of orange marmalade, lemon rind, apricot, green apple, pink peppecorn and clove, as well as hints of honey, dill and oak. Finishes rather sweet, with a light tartness and some pink peppercorn, orange marmalade and dill lingering in the aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation.

While this is just a tad too sweet and boozy for my personal taste, the Tokaji barrel aging certainly comes through quite noticeably here, with notes of citrus, apricot, honey and dill, while the pink peppercorns stand out as well with their fruity, floral pepperiness. In fact these barrel and pepper notes are so intense that not much of the base beer manages to shine through here, except perhaps for hints of green apple and clove.

There's still a good overall balance to this though, despite the sweetness, which is offset nicely enough by the spicy and tart accents. Overall, this makes for an unusual, but rather interesting brew with an intense flavor profile and good overall balance.

Good afternoon, New Beer folks! I spent the morning with the Timbers Army painting huge banners to display in the North End before an upcoming Portland Timbers match. And now I'm keeping an eye on their match against our archrivals, the seattle sounders.

I had the chance to check out a New Beer before the match started:

(No rating yet, still working on the numbers.)

Living Häus Carl West Coast IPA
16-ounce can purchased with lunch at John's Marketplace in Beaverton, OR. Enjoyed in one of their bulbous branded pint glasses. Date stamp reads "DEVIN IS OUR HOMEBOY! 05/30/23 BATCH #132"

This beer is a collaboration with Ruse Brewing of Portland, OR.

    Look:
The body is bright gold and crystal clear. The head is snowy white and sturdy. It lingers for a few minutes before collapsing to an enduring collar that leaves impressive lacing.

    Smell:
Citrus and strawberries. The citrus layer includes lemon zest, grapefruit peel, and a splash of tangerine juice. Zesty! Underneath are notes of pine and mango.

    Taste:
Citrus and sweet mango lead the way, supported by a base of clean, slightly grainy malt. There's a tasty floral/peppery note in the middle and a kiss of mint. The floral character leads to a moderately bitter finish with pine and strawberries harmonizing in the aftertaste. As the beer warms, an interesting herbal note (tarragon? celery seed?) makes a brief appearance on the breath at the very end.

    Feel:
Light-medium body with lively carbonation. Each sip starts crisp and each swallow ends drying and moreish. Mild alcohol warmth.

    Overall:
Like their recent collab with North Park Beer Co. of San Diego, CA, this is another top-notch Living Häus IPA collab which amply displays the skills of both breweries. I think a bit more bitterness would really push this to the next level, but I'm kinda old-school that way. Highly recommended.

My dad drove home from Myrtle Beach to ohio today, so we came to mcouls pub for lunch.

I got a Founders London porter. This was world class English porter! Aromas and flavors of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, roasted nuts, toast, dark bread/crust, wood, peppercorn, pine, herbal, floral, grass; light molasses, toffee, caramel, dark fruit, yeast earth. Medium pine/woody bitter finish. Medium carb and medium full body. Creamy silky malts and balanced sticky hops. Lingering resin drying with min astringent. Amazing for the English style. Super rich malts and balanced earthy hops. 4.35

Lupulin Cinnamon Coffee Shop Assault Vehicle Imperial Pastry Stout, 9% ABV. Pours black with a one-finger light-brown head that left some lacing. Aroma is coffee, chocolate, vanilla, and strong cinnamon. Taste follows, with cinnamon and coffee in the front, other flavors more subtle, quite sweet, slight coffee bitterness. Excellent mouthfeel, overall outstanding to world-class adjacent. Slightly better than the base beer.

Good afternoon, Weekenders! One more new-to-me Tilted Barn offering. I'll need to go back soon.

The Other One is so-named as it's their second-favorite IIPA behind The Chosen One. This one clocks in a little lighter, at 7.9% ABV - like Azalea, which I first had at the brewery on Thursday (fully reviewed from a can yesterday), on the lightest end of the imperial spectrum.

Appearance is nothing to write home about, with modest production and retention at best. Mouthfeel is a bit disappointing, as well. It's creamy and soft, but lacks the body of the best in the style; it's a bit watery, dare I say.

Aroma and flavor, however, are dynamite.

It's explosively and lush, dankly tropical in expression. Notes are basically the same from aroma to palate: papaya, guava, mango, tangerine, vanilla, melon, and dank weed. The dankness is never dirty or earthy, and consequently never abrasive.

If this had a fuller mouthfeel, that juiciness would be even better translated to the palate (as it is in their other IIPAs I've tried, including both the ones I mentioned above). Still, it's an excellent example of the style. Tilted Barn is arguably in Tree House territory with their hazies. I have yet to find one of their IPAs that is as good as Tree House's best, but every one of them has been up there overall.

    Axiom Brewery - Foam Climb

West Coast IPA from the Czech Republic (6.5%).

Pours a cloudy, golden amber coloration with a medium, fluffy head. Smells of biscuity, slightly caramelly malt and citrus, tropical hops, with hints of herbal accents coming through as well.

Taste is a great balance of biscuity, slightly caramelly malt and fruity, bitter, slightly herbal and resinous hops, with citrus and lighter tropical notes of grapefruit and mango, as well as hints of pine. Finishes with a medium/strong bitterness and some grapefruit and pine lingering in the aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation.

This makes for a nice West Coast IPA that is heavy on the quite zesty citrus notes, with a good bitterness in the finish, but could do with a bit more of a caramel malt backbone and resinous pine for my personal taste. I will admit that that caramel malt backbone is probably more of an East Coast quality and this does make for a rather enjoyable West Coast example of the style overall, although it still needs a bit more pine in my opinion. Nevertheless, I did enjoy this and am thankful for every WC/EC IPA that I can manage to get my hands on.

Just a single for me today whilst enjoying a beautiful day at the lake, I first had The King in August of 2016 when we were living in Mankato and I drove two hours to the brewery to pick up two cases of King Sue bombers that I sent all OVER the place, including one in an NBS BIF (#4 maybe?).

That beer is in my Top 10 and was definitely not a hazy. Let’s see where this version takes us.

Pours a very hazy pineapple color with a sudsy off white head that literally provides no lacing. None. That surprised me, but the voluminous mango, ripe tangerine, and pineapple notes on the nose did not. Solidly on point.

The taste is also exquisitely placed, with loads of mango leading the juicy flavor extravaganza, joined by ripe tangerine and a lot of pineapple as well and a nice sweet oat note at the back of the palate. No sign at all of the 9.8% ABV this NETIPA (first time I’ve ever typed that) is packing.

The mouthfeel is very full and substantial, with a nice pillowy character expected for the style. This is very well executed as expected by TH, but I’d love to see them give a nod to the OG King Sue, which was decidedly NOT a hazy, and brew this in that style.

    Maybe someday.

Good evening NBW denizens! I finally got to join in the conversation. Well, with an actual contribution.
Gifted to me by @Ozzylizard recently and it may be my second of the style. Oddly enough, I enjoy the style more than I would think based on the descriptions. But that’s why we try new beers!
The pour was nearly transparent straw color with a bone white head that tried and failed to amount to much. But it left good lacing.
The aroma was lost on my Covid affected nose.
The taste was smoky and malty, the light grassy flavor I normally get from Noble hops is sort of there but it is toasted. Actually one of the best features IMO.
The feel is good, maybe even very good, but the light thinness seems to not go with the flavor.
OA, very good beer. I could drink a few of these in short order.
    Thanks @Ozzylizard!

A lovely New Beer Weekend thus far, late to the party as always; another packed Saturday, first chance to open and enjoy a beer is now. Much like you @Whyteboar I finally get to do more than click that thumbs up button, which is fun, but uh...sharing a beer with you all is fun and a pleasure as always. Just a random thanks for the past few years, I never thought I'd be comfortable sharing and posting beer reviews like this, until I "met" you all that is, OK enough sappiness. @FBarber sent me some beers that were lost in the mail but then showed up weeks later, the last victim of that box is this beer. A Bohemian Pilsner from Goldfinger...

    Goldinger - Bohemian-Style Pilsner

Pale with deep hints of gold, mostly clear, big bubbles make up a white head, collapses quickly leaving a soapy few dots.

Nose is an instant hit of herbal and spicy saaz, there is some doughy white bread hiding underneath but this one is all about the saaz.

The taste has more of a pale malt presence; less doughy than the nose implied more of a hearty and well made light bread, some crust character. Hops lend a pleasant bit of black pepper like spice balanced with some earthiness and grass; hops linger and bite.

Light to medium body, the carb is mildly vigorous but has a gentle bite to it; resiny hops on the tongue with nice bitterness, mostly dry but the hops linger for a while on the tongue.

Thanks for sharing another tasty beer Frank!
