[IMG] Poured into a 16 oz Nordic pint glass canned on. Pours a very attractive hazy yellow orange with a finger sticky white head that leaves thin streaks of lace, with nice retention. 4.25

Aroma mango, peach, mandarin, pineapple, and apricot. 4

Taste follows mango, peach, mandarin, pineapple, and apricot. 4

Mouthfeel is above average, not sticky or dry, soft carbonation, and at 8% it goes down plenty easy. 4.25

Overall this is nice, but nothing stands out. I will have 0 issues drinking the rest of them, but just didn’t dazzle. 4

[IMG] [IMG] Poured into a 13 oz Teku glass not sure when it was bottled. Pours near pitch black with a half finger sticky light brown head that leaves a few thin streaks of lace with solid retention. 4.5

Aroma is roasty coffee, char, vanilla, dark chocolate, back strap molasses, and a healthy dose of bourbon. 4.5

Taste follows deep dark chocolate, vanilla, coffee, char, back strap molasses, and bourbon lingers after each sip. 4.5

Mouthfeel is above average, maybe a tad dry, gentle carbonation, and not sure what the ABV but it drinks rather large, but because it is so complex it goes down easy enough. 4.75

Overall this is a beast and crazy complex, very expensive, but worth the try. Impressive stuff. 4.75

Good morning, Weekenders, and welcome to the Sunday portion of our New Beer proceedings!

My first beer today is less than half gone, but I've had more than enough to recognize a disappointment.

Artisan Beer Works - Vanilla Mocha Multiple Infinities

Yikes. That was a very careful pour, as it started immediately gushing from the can. I even got the bulk of the initial gush into the glass on the right, so the left glass had plenty of care taken, and that was still the result. Not a good start.

On the plus side, it doesn't seem infected. Well, I guess that's really not a plus, as it's kind of an expectation that your beer isn't ruined, but given the inauspicious beginning, I'll chalk it as a win.

Aroma is really quite wonderful: rich, inviting, delectable. Sadly, this would be the last (and first) time this beer impressed me.

Thin on the palate, with enough sting to prevent you from really savoring the sip. All the richness from the nose is missing on the palate. While there's a nice amount of vanilla on the back half of the sip, it never plays with the cacao nor the coffee. It's nowhere near a "delectable, boozy Vanilla Mocha in a can," as advertised.

Overall, this isn't bad. It tastes OK, good even. The mouthfeel is a major disappointment, and the additives never quite gel together. This is a beer with unrealized potential, to be sure.

New Beer #2 (today :stuck_out_tongue: ): BBA Imperial Mayan (Mocha) from Odd Side, sent to me by @Whyteboar in a totally uncalled for retaliation from a legitimately awarded LIF in concert with the NBS BIF. :grinning:

This is one of my lengthier reviews in quite some time. Consequently, it makes more sense to simply link it (as I always do) and let you check it out if that's your desire. For this thread, I'll stick with the main highlights:

*If you're going to age a beer in bourbon barrels, do it long enough that you actually get some of that bourbon influence in the beer.

*Reviews are quite mixed, including some of our esteemed NBS BIF members (@snaotheus @Coronaeus and @FBarber ). This beer is apparently all over the place in terms of actual heat level and sweetness. I can only review the beer in my glass.

*For my experience, the heat was quite lovely and restrained: noticeable, but not aggressive. I think non-fans of chilies would still be able to enjoy this beer, and fans of heat and spice should really appreciate it. I put it right around Mexican Cake, possibly a touch lower, in terms of heat - and above Bomb!, even old-school OG wax cap Bomb!.

*Also from my experience, the sweetness simply isn't there - not from the malt base, not from the bourbon. I personally would have appreciated that as a balance to the dry spice and the heat.

*However, Mexican hot chocolate isn't supposed to be particularly sweet, so in terms of rating the beer against design, I think they really, really nailed the concept.

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/22564/143664/?ba=Roguer#lists
    4.22 / -0.5%

I suspect the wild disparity in reviews and experiences has something to do with batch variation (there's a freaking laundry list of additives here), tweaking the recipe over time (at a minimum, the ABV has varied by multiple percentage points), individual tastes, and day-to-day palate differences. I'm enjoying this on a fairly clean palate, with little being emphasized by prior consumption. My partner seems to be enjoying it even more than I, two sips in.

    Cheers!

    Good morning NBW
My purchase of this beer was a simple preemptive strike for a future date when the Kentucky Common is added to the database.
    Dreaming Creek Kentucky Common Ale

16oz undated can poured into a mug at fridge temp 5.45% ABV 21 IBU per can. The beer pours opaque light brown with light brown colored head. The head recedes to a thin ring and island. Minimal lacing. The aroma is mild, slightly tart and vinous. The taste is tangy toasted malt with earthy notes and mild bitterness. The mouthfeel is thin to medium bodied with average carbonation and a mostly dry finish. Overall, seems to meet the Kentucky Common profile.

Kentucky common beer is a once-popular style of ale from the area in and around Louisville, Kentucky from the 1850s until Prohibition. This style is rarely brewed commercially today. It was also locally known as dark cream common beer, cream beer or common beer. The beer was top-fermented and was krausened up to 10% making it quite highly carbonated. Like cream ale, it was consumed fresh, usually as draught beer. In 1913 it was estimated that 80% of the beer consumed in Louisville was of this type. Many local breweries made only this style of beer.

    Characteristics
This kind of beer was usually made with 6 row barley, approximately 25 to 30 percent corn grits and 1 to 2 percent each caramel or caramel malts and black malt to counteract the high bicarbonate water. It had an original gravity of 1.040-1.050, an average bitterness of 27 IBU. The beer was typically kegged and served relatively young, with a short time of 6 to 8 days from mash in to keg. The beer is an easy-drinking, slightly sweet, dark amber to light brown ale.

    Cheers all!

Back home from cleaning the fair booth, and time for a beer a friend picked up for me when he was in the UP of Michigan.

Peace Sign - Soo Brewing - Sault Ste Marie, MI - American IPA - 6.9%

I had to add this to the database. I am kinda down on the hazy IPAs lately, but my friend said they had an American IPA there for sale, and I was interested. Well, this is delicious as heck. Tons of pine hits me and hits in waves that wash over my taste buds. It seems the pine does change flavor through the waves, and a hint of pineapple does show up also. I am impressed, and would gladly drink again. Delicious.

From a 16oz can purchased at the brewery dated 7-17-2023
The beer pours an amber hue from the can. Clear, not hazy. When I hold it to the light I see a few carbonation bubbles rising in the glass. The head that forms is 1 finger and is off white with a hint of amber in it. Looks very cloud like, with tiny bubbles. The head retention is pretty good overall. Beautiful sticky lacing on the glass as the head dissipates.
The nose isn't too strong, however, what I do get is a beautiful pine smell from the hops, with hints of tropical,
Taste - Pine, and layers of it. The pine flavors seem to change somehow between different kinds of pine. There's a faint hint of tropical, a bit of pineapple, but pine is the main flavor here. Lots of bitterness hits on the backside.
Sticky pine resin feeling from this beer. This beer just clings to my throat and doesn't let go at all.
Damn, do I miss this style, and it's amazing when done right. This is done right. I'm loving it.

All right, I'm going to keep enjoying this for a while, but I'll be back for another new beer later.

Good day BAs! Today’s new to me beer is Firestone Walker’s “Paraboloid” (2023), a Tavour purchase. Parabola aged 18 months in select 20 year old Elijah Craig barrels, then blended:

Poured at 51°. Black with ruby see through, very good clarity; fizzy tan head with a few rocks; poor cap retention; thin ring; minimal spots of lace; no legs. Bourbon, charred oak nose; boozy exhale. Oaky bourbon entry; bitter sweet dark chocolate; burnt coffee beans; a little vanilla as beer warmed; finish is oaky bourbon. Dry barrel tongue coating; alcohol bite on tip of tongue; mouth warmth from 13% abv; silky smooth feel; medium light body; drinks thin for abv. Overall, the barrel flavors and feel overpower the whole; long dry wooden bitter roast linger; did not enjoy as much as regular Parabola (2023) I drank two days ago.

I remember this being one of my main complaints.
I've had those other three beers, and when I had this one it was *way* hotter than any of those other three.
I suspect this is 100% correct. They have porbably worked to dial it in and make it more balanced.

Good Noon-time my beer friends...was a little busy yesterday so here we are. It is beautiful sunny summer day here, the humidity has left for the weekeend.

I hadn't beer shopped in a long long time and when it rains it pours, found the SN Fan Favorite pack and some other fresh classics over the past week. Still at in laws for another 2 months or so and I'm loving our little basement home away from home. I'm down here sitting in utter peace and quiet sipping on this beauty. Yes I had this beer in a beer nerd's life a long long time ago...coming at it with a fresh perspective and reviewing for the first time.

Sierra Nevada - Nooner (German Pilsner 5.2%)

Pours a brilliantly bright dark gold, crystal clear, white bubbly head settles quickly but it leaves a nice thin film, there is some minor lacing.

Nose is quite hoppy, get some bright citrus, combine with some herbal qualities; leads me to want to say lemongrass like, malt is mostly cracker like with some light grain husk character.

The taste is also nicely hoppy, but too me it is not overdone...semi-sweet cracker like malt greets first, tastes sort of like a mix of water cracker and ritz to me, then come the hops; very grassy, hay like hops; after the sip goes down the herbal nature hits in the aftertaste.

Bigger side of light bodied; hops are tongue coating and then the bitterness hits moderately on the finish; this beer doesn't not finish the driest or crispiest but it still finishes quite clean for me; the drying sort of builds but it’s still has this minor lingering malt presence.

I'm so happy drinking an old Sierra Nevada beer right now, go by these up so we get more "fan favorites" from them. I can't wait to drink my next one from the pack later today; it is gonna be a hard decision and yes I plan to consider them all new given how long ago I had them all.

I hope everyone is having a wonderful lovely Sunday thus far.

Surviving the onslaught of kids and grandkids. The pool is a great distraction.
More of the same for today.
My new beer is New MexiKolsch from Boxing Bear in Albuquerque. My first beer from this brewery, and I enjoyed it.
A clear light yellow color with a small white head and a bit of lace.
Grainy aroma with a hint of lemon.
Taste of white bread, hint of lemon. Late hops.
    Crisp and clean mouthfeel.

Family Harvest - Soo Brewing - Sault Ste. Marie, MI - Weizenbock - 9.2% ABV

This beer is a very dark pouring beer. Dark amber in color. The amber is lighter at the bottom of the glass, but gets darker as it goes up. When I hold it up to the light, it's clear, and I don't see any carbonation rising in the glass. The head comes to one finger, and is tan colored. Frothy looking, but not long lasting. The head dissipates to a ring around the glass, with no lacing on the glass.
Aroma is malt dominant, and has a nutty aroma. Kind of getting a combination of peanuts and walnut. For sure there's a roasted hint in this beer. I also get a caramel note on the aroma.
This is a malty beer, and there's so much here, I'm sure I'll not get it all. I get a nutty flavor that hits right away. This continues throughout. I get a nice hint of caramel that hits next, roasted and toasted. Hints of toffee also show up. I get a bit of a sweet cherry flavor on the backside. There's also a slight buttery biscuit flavor that shows up in the mix.
This is a very smooth feeling beer. Very full bodied. There's a faint bubbly and crisp feeling to this.
Wow, what an amazing beer overall. I am really digging this.

I'll see if I have another in me after this.

    The Rusty Nail
    [IMG]
    13.6% Stout by Fremont

Oatmeal stout brewed with licorice and cinnamon bark aged in bourbon barrels. Thanks to @snaotheus for this great beer.

Poured from a 2022 twenty two ounce bottle with neither head nor lacing, and little carbonation. Starless and Bible black.

The nose features the barrel and a wee bit of malty char. Pleasant but unremarkable.

The taste reveals the licorice and cinnamon bark. They pair nicely and do not dominate as I feared. I'm wary of cinnamon in beer, but the deft hand of the brewers keeps things in harmony.

Mouthfeel is luxurious and finish is barrel. Not too hot but the booze is felt. The absence of carbonation in even a delicious beer is a big negative for me. Luckily, there's enough carbonation to satisfy.

A big stout on a beautiful summer night is a treat and this beer delivers the goods.

Gorgeous pastel yellow body, opaque; thick, lasting white head, densely spongy. Sublime and subtle tropical fruit scent; pineapple, banana, peach. Balanced juicy and fruity flavors; mild banana and grapefruit flavors; light to medium presence of hop bitterness; very low-key phenol presence. Heavy body; velvety and smooth; juicy.

What I really like about this 'aged' hazy (ok, "juicy") India pale ale is the light presence of hop bitterness. Too many times these type of beers get really harsh and abrasive with the hop bitterness. Not so here. I have no idea if the intensity of the flavor and hop presence would be dialed up with a fresh version, but this nearly four month old beer is a joy to drink.

Good Afternoon, and welcome to New Beer Sunday #961! This is the second of two this weekend from @Ocalafox , and one I've been looking forward to trying after seeing hundreds of cans enjoyed over the years in the WBAYDN threads.

Lawson's Finest Liquids Sip of Sunshine

    Can Notes:
Received via package from a BA trade with @Ocalafox on 5/30/23, refrigerated until today. 16 oz canned 4/12/23 @18:51:36, 8% ABV, India Pale Ale. Sip of Sunshine IPA is brewed by Lawson's Finest Liquids at Two Roads Brewing in Stratford, Connecticut.

Our lupulin-laden India Pale Ale is packed with juic tropical fruit character, bright floral aromas, and delectable layers of hop flavor. Pour mindfully, inhale deeply, and enjoy a tropical vacation in a glass!

Lawson's Finest Liquids is a family owned, award winning brewery, taproom, and retail store located in the Mad River Valley of Vermont.

Appearance: Primary and later a secondary pour into a tall tulip glass. Tan bronze clear base, steady mild carbonation stream, generous bright white creamy head leaves a thick bubbly and creamy cover over the base well after pouring. Looks great, held up well. 4.75

    Aroma:
Wonderful medley of grapefruit, pine and citrus, smells sweet, strong and enjoyed from the crack of the can. 4.5

Taste: First sensation was the strong caramel malt presence, possibly the result of three plus months in the can. This brings sweetness, as does the fruit hop profile consistent with the aroma profile. Balanced well by a nice pine bitterness guarding excess sweetness like a dog herding sheep. 4.25

Mouthfeel: Dry, bitter balances out the sweetness. Medium bodied, negligible carbonation felt. Now at the halfway mark, drinking lighter and easier than the 8% ABV. Dry bitter pine strengthens as I continue, consistent with the finish. 4.75

    Overall:
I am really enjoying this beer, despite the heavier than personally preferred caramel malt presence interfering with my wonderful hops. I'm chalking this up to possibly not getting to this in a fresher state, and will revisit this review if I come across and enjoy a 1 ish month can. All that said, this is a wonderful beer and one I would buy when I come across in the future. Thanks! 4.5

Afternoon from NE where it's just a stellar day. Lawns done and some trees trimmed. Went for a swim and now it's time for a new beer.
    Schilling Beer Jakobus German-Style Pilsner.
Pours a crystal clear golden color. With a bright white head, minimal lacing.
Bread dough, lemon, thyme and floral hops on the nose.
Lemony, grain, slightly sweet malts, some spice, a bit more bitter than I expected but it works.
Light, crisp and clean body on the drying bitter finish.
Holy smokes I need to buy more Schilling! Excellent beer. I could drink these all day.
They had their Landbier as well at the store but it was dated early March. Not quite sure how that would be.
