Pours a thick, dirty banana yellow orange; opaque; relatively thin white head but lasting. Powerful tropical fruit aroma; oats and banana; citrus notes, orange and white grapefruit. Dull citrus flavors; grapefruit rind; sharp bitterness and a strong phenol edginess. Heavy, creamy texture; dense velvet feel.

A decent New England India pale ale though lacking some depth and complexity in the taste.

Trying to drink this fresh (even though no bottling date ) makes today an Epic double feature

    Epic - Spiral Jetty

A nice hop smoothie by the looks of the list.

Purchased from the dabc for $3.50

    No bottling date

Poured at fridge temp into a tulip glass

Pours a caramel copper with a sandy tan head. 3.75

Myriad of citrus hops, nothing in particular jumping out though. Perhaps lemon as the strongest one. 3.75

Heavy malt, nearly a malt bomb. Citrus is there, in a citrus rind kinda way, bitterness outshining any fruitiness. 3.5

Light prickling carbo, sticky resin mouthcoating, lingering bitterness. 3.5

Overall it's a deeply bitter IPA that may check the boxes for some, and while nearly enjoyable for me felt kinda messy due to the heavy maltiness of it. Could be a byproduct of sitting for Lord knows how long at room temp at the dabc. 3.5

    Cheers!

Day 2, going for something light on a beautiful, chilly evening in Northern Indiana. How about a 10% NETIPA from a brewery that is the equal of ….. pretty much any hazy brewery.

    Let’s dance, NBSers.

Pours a very hazy yellow straw color with a fluffy white head that lingers as a ring around the edge of the glass leaves thick patches of lacing on the glass as you enjoy the beer. Gorgeous hazy.

The nose is packed with very dank, juicy citrus aromas of ripe oranges, grapefruit, and passion fruit, as well as gooseberries and green grapes.

The taste is led by all of that juicy citrus, with the ripe oranges and grapefruit most delicious, and the green grapes and gooseberries providing a nice bit of tartness, but this beer is all about the dank and that is directly attributable to the passion fruit, which coats the palate with intense citrus flavors before a bit of creamy oats provides balance at the back of the palate.

The mouthfeel is full and chewy, as expected given the gravity of the beer. It would be very easy for this beer to drift into Cloyingville because of the intense hop profile, but it doesn’t, which is a credit to the brewery, which stands in the same stead as the “big boy” NEIPA breweries. That’s good company.

    Hey what's going on?!

Laying low this weekend, still trying to grab the concept that it is Fall out there and the warmth is going to be gone for awhile now...

Still manage to get in a tasty new brew from time to time though, and that's what counts.

Third Hill has taken over from Astrolab and I have been sampling their wares of late

Third Hill Brewing Co. - Snow Globes IPA

Poured from the can into a Spiegelau IPA glass.

Intensely crystal clear. Shimmering like there is nearly nothing in the glass with clarity that is like a mirror. Deep brass bright yellow with a very large forming head right out of the can. Fortunately the head settles fairly quickly, but nothing crazy while leaving quite a good amount of leggy and pill like lacing. Quite a neat looking brew.

Sweet sensing hop nose for the aroma, that has a sugary like citrus quality. Quite a bit overboard it seems with a big hinting honey component like quality as well, but solidly pleasurable.

Palate continues more of the goods. Sweet touching hop citrus, more of a light tangerine quality, with touching grapefruit pith particularly towards the finish. Juiced slightly in hop flavor, but also fairly dry and mineral like. Flirts with classic West coast style but doesn't quite get it dialed in.

While some of the great sense of classic style seems to be here, there's a spin an different touch on this than expected. Still a solidly good drinking IPA with little fanfare.

    look: 4.25 | smell: 4 | taste: 4 | feel: 4 | overall: 4 | BA Score: 4.02

    Good evening NBW
Certainly my closer for this Sunday.

DFH 120 Minute IPA aged in Utopias barrels

12oz bottle coded D0773105111 poured into a DFH signature tulip glass at fridge temp 17% ABV per label. The beer pours opaque medium amber with meager khaki colored head. The head recedes to a thin ring and little else. No lacing. The aroma is moderate with a meld of barrels (bourbon, brandy, wine, rum) and sweet varied caramel notes. The taste is semisweet caramel with oak, bourbon, vanilla, brandy, brown sugar and big hop notes of citrus and pine. Highly bitter. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with less than average carbonation and a mostly dry finish. There's alcohol in the nose and taste, but not in a distracting or unpleasant way. Overall, excellent. Elements of well done English and American barley wine come together very well.

I'll be at this one for a while. Cheers all!

Hell from Wayfinder. Comes in at 4.9% ABV.

Poured at fridge temp. Pours a murky yellow with a good inch of white head. Bubbles rising throughout. The nose is crisp and refreshing. Biscuits, pine, orange, wheat, slight leather. Very nice. Can't wait to try it.

The taste is wonderful. Orange, slight toffee, slight citrus peel, lemon, crackers, and a slight peppery note.

The mouthfeel is light and crisp. Overall, a great helles!

I was in the mood for a peanut butter stout, but not many options. I got this Lasting Brass Wrath of the Nunchucks. Lucky pick, with excellent everything. Color is like a hazy super deep mahogany with loads of mocha lacing. Aroma is dark chocolate and peanut butter. Flavor is phenomenal representation of semi-sweet dark chocolate with a fresh peanut vein throughout. 10% has no burn, no warming yet. Cold, this is crushable.

I really enjoyed the Utopias effect on this more than the WWS. I’m tempted to buy a case, because it surely must age well, despite being technically an IPA.

    Still more new-to-me offerings...

    16 ounce can packaged 08/09/23.

Moderate to vigorous pour yields a one inch plus white head over a slightly hazy, light golden body with sticky lacing.

Nose of citrus and tropical fruit.

Taste follows nose closely with orange, tangerine, and pineapple. Finish of a bit of citrus pith bitterness.

    Full mouthful with medium-full carbonation.

Overall, a real nice IPA from Dan and his crew. Give this one a try and you won't be disappointed!
    Cheers!!

    From a bottle, 2022 release.

There's a bit of a hiss and a bit of slow rising smoke coming out of the bottle after opening. This is a thick looking pouring beer. Dark brown in color, with hints of amber in it. No light shines through the glass. The head that forms is 2 finger, tan, but doesn't last long at all, as expected. The head dissipates into a ring around the edge of the glass, with no lacing on the glass.
The nose is rich and deep with dark fruit notes. It also has a hint of leather. Faint hints of bourbon also shine through.
Taste - There's a good deal of dark fruit that comes off here. Lots of raisin and plum. An earthy and woody flavor also shines through. Some caramel and toffee also show up and a hint of bourbon as well.
The body is full. There's a bit of a burn that hits you, that is a bit of warming in my throat. There's a crisp and bubbly feeling in this beer also.
Overall a very tasty barleywine. I am happy with it.

I think I am done with new beers this weekend. Cheers all, and see you next weekend.

Boundary Bay Festbier, new to me while I wait for my family to exhaust their interest in Salmon Days, a street festival here in Issaquah. My interest was spent long ago. typing because I have time and I'm bored, And didn't anticipate a chance gf or a new beer.

Pours clear golden with a small head, lots of carbonation. Smell is grainy / doughy. Little bit of earthiness.

Taste is loud grain, hint of nuttiness. Slight earthy / grassy bitterness. Some honeysuckle sweetness.

Mouthfeel is light, surpringly dry. Nice beer.

    Good evening fellow beer geeks!
    My dinner beer:
    Satin Skies Oatmeal Stout.
Surprisingly good; I am pleasantly surprised with this. I enjoy it more than Liquid Vinyl- their “standard” stout.
For the ABV, this is a very good stout- more than just smoothness, the feel is lush and viscous, which accentuates the depth of flavors involved.
The malt brings the normal coffee and chocolate flavors with some subtle smoky flavors and molasses, which really makes it interesting, and quite tasty.
I will definitely be buying this one again.

Glorious fall day here with humidity finally getting the boot. There was this strange yellow orb in the sky, though... must have scared the Patriots, too. It's one thing to lose, it's another to be unable to compete.

Kinda ambivalent about Founders these days, but I was wondering whether they messed up one of my favorite beers or made something tasty, so heres to New Adjunct-laden Beer Sunday. I love maple, but most maple beers I have tried haven't been very good.

French Toast Bastard, which is Backwoods plus a bunch o' stuff...hmmm...

Pours deep reddish brown and extremely clear with a slightly rocky, generous beige-colored head. The head hangs at the quarter inch mark for a bit, then leaves a small residual islands and Klingons at the edge. There's legs and lacing - the little bubbles stick to liquid that sheets the glass on a swirl or sip.

Ok...this smells the way I would like my Frrnch toast to smell (minus the pile of butter I put on it). Sweet maple syrup, just a little cinnamon. A bit of vanilla, a bit of booze. Strong, intense, room-filling (looks like the fruit flies like it) and zero doubt what they threw in the pot.

The taste isn't as much of a freight train. It isn't really layered - it kinda kits all at once and unpacks itself in the aftertaste. So it's pretty much boozy French toast up front - but it somehow doesn't strike me as "heavy" - intense, but not heavy? Maple, cinnamon (just a little), vanilla, bourbon. As the taste fades, it goes out in layers and you end up with residual sweetness and a reminder of the OG Backwoods. You get some malt, some dark fruit and a little peppery cinnamon spiciness as the intensity fades, and I'm feeling maybe there's a tad bit of a peat smoke taste.

The feels is rich, smooth, some residual stickiness, sweet but not stupid sweet. Nicely warming, slightly boozy finish. Not being stupid sweet probably has a lot to do with the flavor not seeming as intense as the smell - it's not syrupy and sticky and I think that let's the flavors come across as restrained.

Ok, so it's adjunct-laden and only faintly heathens to the style. Don't care - I am really digging this adjunct-laden abomination. I'll probably need to restrain myself on the scoring - in the moment, it'd be "wicked high" with an extremely heavy impact of the "like" factor because drinking it I'm not finding anything wrong with it.

A late new beer Sunday for this one…tonight I went with this one I’ve been looking forward to. First year that I’ve seen it around here, grabbed for the Oktoberfest thread but never got around to it. Also it’s in a green can after another eagles win

    Touched - Festbier (Festbier 5.8%)

Beautiful pouring beer, lively quick rising carbonation, absolutely crystal clear dark leaning gold, big initial head, some nice initial lacing and nice cap remains a while.

Nose is rich pale malt, very lightly caramelized; dried leafy hops, little bit of cracker.

Taste is really nice; it’s rich full pale malty goodness; with cracker like quality to it; nice little hoppy bite on the finish; earthy grass.

Leaning towards medium body; but drinks really light and easy, the malt coats the palate then quickly disappears in the presence of a clean hoppy bite, really nice, enhances the crispness of this beer.

A really bright and pleasant Festbier, really glad I opened this can tonight. Cheers everyone, have a great week! See you all again, soonish….

    —————-

As our renovation wraps up; slowly putting last minute this together…just cut down and feed n waxed our future shelf over sink.

My nightcap; Imperial Barleywine from KiiTOS Brewing Company.
Sent to me by the one and only @NorsemanOne in a recent NBW BIF, sorry, at over 15% ABV I seem to misplace details.
Might be the last one that he sent me though.
I opened it while thinking of the meme that @Dimidiata posts: “On Sundays we drink Barleywines”
So we shall. And with this I can see why- not a bitter or hard edge anywhere. This was all sweet malts times two.
The alcohol was very well hidden in the menagerie of sweet bread and dark fruit and sheer sweetness that was brought to bear in this beer. I kid not; in a country obsessed with hops, this beer excludes them from the flavor profile. Daring and it works for me.
Cheers all, and good night. I’ll catch up with you tomorrow.
