Scratch - Chanterelle Biere de Garde

750ml bottle served in a snulip. Don't see a date on it.

Pours a hazy dark golden, smallish head, looks pretty carbonated. Smell is honeysuckle and cooked peppers, gain, earthy / umami.

Taste is pretty similar -- something gives it a slight spiciness, the sweetness and umami gives me a pepper vibe with maybe a little bit of funky yeast spiciness to move it a bit more in that direction.

Mouthfeel is on the thick and chewy side. Overall...this is a really interesting beer. It's good, but it's quite unusual, and I think I'll like it more as I adjust to it.

    Hello (Almost) Late Night NBW.
    This gem is from @CarolinaCardinals
    A solid 'Merican Barleywine!
    Beastly by Edmond's Oast
Thanks to CarolinaCardinals for sending this in our brand spanking new Barleywine/Stout BIF #1.
Pours a golden hue with hints of amber peaking through as well. Light fluff rises nearly 2 inches and tapers off to a thin sheet. Slight lacing.
Nose is definitely calling out, 'I'm hopped." A nice resin and pine note kicks off just before the malt.
Wow, I am liking this. Not a lot of American barleywines out there. And I am liking this one. It has a solid foundation of malt: caramel and buckwheat. The hops are omnipresent, firm, but not overbearing. Again, resiny, piney, and a hint of orange zest.
Mouthfeel has decent heft, light carb, and a smooth, dry, bettering finish.

I had plans today for a beer found in the back of the pantry but just not up for it. It's been great seeing all the new beers and reading the stories on this extended weekend.

We had a Jesse Tree service tonight with the choir plus family/kids readings of Old Testament stories placing an ornament on the "tree" which was an oak branch from a tree knocked over in a windstorm this summer. Our six year old grandson read the story of Noah because that's his name. He practiced it three times at home and apparently only Nana and Papa were nervous. We had him try out the microphone tonight and he read one line, said "I got this", and he certainly did. You think they aren't paying attention but he's seen us use mics before so it wasn't intimidating to him at all. Very nice service for the holiday season and everyone did a great job, not just Noah.

Next task...figuring out how to burn four weeks of vacation days I still haven't used...

Mother Earth - Silent Night. This'll be my last new beer of the weekend, I think, and probably my last beer of the weekend. But, I'm going to Japan tomorrow, so I'll probably be drinking all week long.

750ml corked/caged bottle served in a flared goblet. Bottled on 2018. My brother shipped it to me earlier this year.

Pours black with a small, dark tan head. Smell is boozy, burnt caramel, vanilla, molasses.

Taste is pretty straightforward stout. Chocolate and roast coffee, a little anise and char. Vanilla and bourbon are there, lightly, very late.

Mouthfeel is on the light side for a barrel aged stout (though not "light" by any stretch), slight chalky texture. Overall...it's a bit on the tame side for a barrel aged stout, but if you're looking for a slightly-amped-up-by-bourbon-barrel standard stout, this is a great choice.

Barreled Souls Stay Puft Imperial Stout, 12.2% ABV; 4.11 overall Will try to dig through my pics & see if I can figure out who sent this. Right now @sulldaddy & @hopley both get credit

Can't tell by looking the pics, the front labels all look the
    same.

Pours an effervescent mahogany with one finger of mocha colored head. Some head retention & lacing

    S: Cocoa, marshmallow, cola notes

T: Roastyness, marshmallow, smokey notes, cocoa & dryness up front. Cocoa, marshmallow, oakyness/dryness as this beer warms up, some warming woody, notes that make me think rum, certainly molasses there as well. Finishes with a little warming dark rum & coke twang, vanilla & some dark chocolate

MF: Chewy, low but noticeable carbonation, fairly sticky on the lips, warming

A sipper to be sure, would be great to drink around the fire this time of year

Lightly hazy body; pale yellow color; decent carbonation, lively; dense, fluffy, white head. Initial smell impression was cabbage, but as the beer opened, tropical fruit dominated; pineapple and grapefruit. Light yet very pleasant tropical fruit taste; honey dew melon; papaya; some mild grain background; light bread; delicate hop bitterness. Medium-light body; light juiciness.

I expected this to be a turbid, New England India pale ale hop bomb. Instead, I find this to be a fine, easy drinking sipper. I love the restraint used with this beer. Easy drinking and very enjoyable

Ink black body, opaque; thick, frothy, lasting tan head. Cocoa and dark chocolate aroma; rich brownie suggestion; twinge of spiciness; dark roasted grain. Dense, rich flavor; milk chocolate with smidgen of booziness; outstanding dark roasted grain with a touch of char; vanilla. Heavy, oily mouthfeel; viscous; slippery and oozing.

One can count on Verboten to make some incredible dense and complex dark beers. This one is no exception.

Time to drop another imperial stout in here for the weekend. didnt do any big shares yesterday after hurting my knee playing soccer. Still wrapped and on anti inflammatories, but its beer-thirty!
This is Eredita Brewing out of North Haven where they contract brew. Barred is their first stout and it is to be a series for the style. This one is 10% ABV and features the addition of coffee. Though not directly related to the BSBIF#1, I did send @Beersnake1 one of these treats, so I waited till after his review to share, to not give hints as to the contents of my box(es)!

    onto my review:

sampling a cellar temp 16 oz can and pouring into my trusty snifter. Beer was purchased about 2 months ago and has been in my cellar since. Date Stamp of 5/22/2023 on can.
the beer pours a dark black coffee color with no light passing through the glass. A dense tan head of 1.5cm foams up and fades slowly to a sturdy edge lining of my glass.
Aroma is roasted malts and coffee grounds. Nose is robust and is almost exactly what I expected from an imperial coffee stout that doesnt have any lactose or other adjuncts. No hop character and booze is well hidden.
First sip reveals a medium body with slightly sticky mouthfeel and very fine, fizzy carbonation. Beer does leave a little bit of a coating on my lips after each sip.
Flavor is exactly as the nose advertises, roasted malts almost to char and dark black coffee. No sweetness, no adjuncts, no hops, no booze. This feels like an olde school imperial stout example and it works very well for exactly what it is trying to do. Fun to try this impy stout and happy to have a local brewery making a nice beer. Id buy this one again for a bit of a time machine experience.

    On Sunday’s we drink Barleywines…
    [IMG]
    And we enjoy them.
Look at that head! For BA barleywine it’s amazing.
The taste is an excellent barleywine with just a bit more hops bitterness than I prefer, but still very good. The figs and raisins are a bit bourbon soaked but beyond that there is little evidence of the barrel.
The feel is thinner than expected, especially considering the ABV of 14.something.
Good but not great, at least IMO.
    Cheers!

One more. Thanks to my brother @hophound
Fresh Start: Maple Coffee Stout by the beautiful Bosque Brewing
    12 oz can
Obsidian hue, khaki to sandy colored foam rises nearly 2 inches, then settles to a thin film and a ring. Low retention but scattered, clumpy lacing.
Nose is pure bliss. A round, slightly fruity medium roast coffee with a straight up, subtle kiss of maple syrup. Exactly as advertised! The roast is gentle yet firm. The maple is warm, welcoming, no where near cloying.
Flavor is a smooth ride, predominately coffee. The maple is much more subdued here. Hints of cocoa and and earthy peat also come in for a spell.
Mouthfeel is smooth and mildly bitter and toasty on the finish.

I liked it went well with the great food. However, as a stand alone beer I wanted a litlte more out of it.

    gave it a 4.2 overall

Pours a hazed gold with 2÷ fingers of beige colored head. Great Lacing and Good Head Retention

S: Tons of Tropical Fruit, some wheat notes

T: Green Melon, Passion Fruit, hints of lime and a little strawberry up front. Grassy notes pick up as this warms, plus Green Melon and Cantaloupe and Strawberry. Finishes a little dry with grassyness and Green Melon

MF: Light/Medium Body with dialed back carbonation, nice balance

Pretty easy to drink, good flavor, on tap is better

Squeakin in a few hours shy of the end of NBW here on the left coast. From the barleywine/stout BIF, courtesy of @DIM , we have this new-to-me beer and brewery:

Wallenpaupack Brewing - 6th Anniversary Ale

This is a straightforward non-BA English barleywine. Well done and exactly what you'd expect from the style - mahogany color, caramel and a bit of brown sugar on the nose, palate is toffee, caramel, hint of raisins, some apple cidery stuff happening in the finish.

    Thanks, Dan!
