A little snow here and headed for the deep freeze. One more busy weekend - cantata at church and Cristmas Eve service coming up. The cold doesn't bode wellfor a robust turnout tomorrow...

Somewhat of a local tonight, within an hour of the driveway:

Seven Saws out of Holden, MA. This is Sugar Shack, a smoked porter with maple. Don't know the brewery and the only info I have on the beer is from the can - made with smoked malts and maple syrup is what it says.

It pours a deep cola color with substantial red tinting. Good 3/4 inch brown fluffy head that falls a bit quick leaving a thin but good area as an island with a solid ring. Clings just a bit.

Ok...smell is smoke and maple. Smoke dominates, and the maple peeks out as kind of a sweet note. Not noticing anything as far as hops go except for some earthiness. Maple and smoke own this show.

The taste brings more of the porter base into play - roast malts, caramel/toffee and a very light kiss of coffee and chocolate. The smoke and maple are strong and try to take over but they don't. There's more like an overall flavor going on where everybody gets a turn but ends up as part of the whole. Slightly sweet overall. Earthy. Cola or Dr. Pepper like flavor - just a bit. A very slight char on the end.

The feel is a little creamy and very smooth. Nicely carbonated. Smoke and maple carry into the aftertaste that lingers a while.

Overall - I like it. Smoke and maple dominatebut don't overpower - its an interesting flavor. Now I have no idea if "maple smoked porter" means the malt was maplewood smoked. I suspect maple smoked malts by the flavor - fairly sweet, clean smoke flavor I'm a little familiar with. Thinking 3.8-ish on this one.

Good evening denizens of NBW! Been a long but good day. Thought I would treat myself with a pastry stout (yeah, surprised me too) but it has been in the cellar for a while so I grabbed it.
Poured stout black with a head that managed to reach the dizzying heights of a centimeter. Dissipating fairly quickly, which is typical for the style.
The taste has likely mellowed over time, what remains is the maple and cinnamon, the vanilla is likely there but blended in, as did the coffee. It was pretty good, but probably would be better without a few of the additives.
The feel is a little less viscous than I expected, but certainly not bad.
It’s altogether pretty good, I enjoyed it, but I know they can do better.
    Cheers all!

Camp Lager - Outer Range Brewing - Frisco, CO - American Lager - 4.3%

Damn, this beer packs a lot of flavor into a low ABV package. It's been sitting longer than it should, but still tastes delicious. Thank you!

    From a 12oz can, canned on 08/27/24

This is a clear looking beer and light golden in color. There's a bit of carbonation bubbles rising in the glass to produce a 3 finger white head. I am really digging the head retention, which is great, and there's some nice looking lacing on the glass.
Aroma is full on biscuit, and I smell it while pouring. Up close I get more of a grain and cereal aroma. There's a hint of honey like sweetness also in the aroma.
Taste - like the nose, this is a grain based flavor. Biscuit starts it off then it turns to cereal grain. There's a hint of sweetness as well as a hoppy bitterness. There's also a floral element to the back.
The body is crisp and clean feeling. There's a slightly sticky feeling to this beer.
This beer is very tasty. It packs a lot of flavor into a lover ABV beer.

I may yet have another new beer tonight. Cheers!

From a 12oz can with no date on it.

This is a murky golden pouring beer. The head of this beer is white in color, and 1 finger. Head retention is decent, and there's a bit of lacing on the glass.
There's a bit of mango on the aroma, and it hits while pouring. The mango hits harder up close with an earthy aroma from the hops.
Taste - Mango is the main flavor here. There's the mango that was added to the beer as well as mango from the hops which is a bit earthy tasting.
The body is full feeling and smooth. Not much bitterness from the hops, but some.
Interesting beer. It has actual mango, and hop mango. Tasty.

I should stop today, since I f-up the ABV of this beer when I entered it. I will submit a correction. See you all in the morning. Cheers!

    Schneider Weisse - Aventinus Eisbock

330ml bottle served in a WABL sample glass. 580387 is stamped on the label, but I have no idea what that means. Bought it a few hours ago at Beer Junction.

Pours pretty, clear mahogany, darkening to heavy brown at the thicker spots, medium to large sized head, lots of carbonation. Smell is very bright fruit -- dates and raisins, sweet toffee.

Taste is along the same lines, but with a stronger barky bitterness than I would have expected. Maybe some slightly burnt molasses, surprising bitter bite.

Mouthfeel is medium to thick but neither sticky nor chewy. Overall, very nice beer.

I'm fairly sure that's my last style tick.

Ivory Bill Brewing's Old Style Alt, 5.4% ABV; 3.81 overall

Pours an effervescent amber with 2 fingers of beige head. Above average head retention & lacing

S: Toasty, hints of hay & grass, a little toffee once all warmed up

T: Follows the nose, grassy, a little grainy, a little toffee & dryness up front. Some millet notes as this beer warms up, more toffee, woody hops & grassyness too. Finishes, dry, grainy & with some caramel

MF: Light/medium body, fairly firm/sharp carbonation, a little off point, a little grainy

Drinkable enough, this Brewery is soon to be dormant or is it defunct? Is an odd bird around here: Open fermenters with low/no Gluten. They will be missed & hopefully not forgotten. I wish the body was certainly more, that is what I am not picking up style-wise

Taste is tart, berry and chalky sweet tart, some Again, very jammy. Some funk.

Mouthfeel is smooth and velvety. Very good beer. Interesting and enjoyable balance of funk, jam, and tart.

    Nj beer co chips
...a sort of murky muddy brown with an overflowing head that quickly dissipated
...light carbonation with a creamy, thick body
...aroma is chocolate chips, thick chewy fudge, vanilla, malt and a bit of alcohol
..taste is sweet but not overly done with the fudge out front. Can find the vanilla, malt, chocolate chips but it really tastes like a brownie/chocolate cake fell into a stout.
...overall it delivered the flavors advertised and was well made[IMG]

    Lawsons nitro irish stout
...solid black appearance with a thin but lasting tan head
...light carbonation with about a medium body
...aroma is a strong hit of roasted malt, black coffee, dark fruit, and a little bit of wood
...taste is definitely dry, black coffee, roasted malt, and coffee grinds
...not always a fan of nitro but this definitely worked and was spot on for a dry irish stout[IMG]

    Einstok Doppelbock
    [IMG]

Appearance: Clear dark amber, good head.

    Smell: Sweet, malty, red fruits.

Taste: Starts sweet and caramel-y, then gets a little dark fruit going in the middle. Stays pretty sweet throughout, maybe a little earthy hops at the end.

Overall: Nice to see another Einstok beer, this doppelbock is pretty tasty, not particularly boozy, so pretty easy to drink on a cold winter's day. Good Stuff!

@snaotheus - If anyone argued about perogi's or any Polish food with my Busia, there would be a funeral to attend a few days later, and it wouldn't be for her. Also, well done on completing all the styles!

Welcome one and all to the penultimate 2024 New Beer Sunday, edition # 1035. As promised delivering my second suburban brewed IPA, this one advertised as a Double Hazy and a collaboration with Gnosis Brewery. This is the first BA review after I believe the initial release in early December.

12/22/24 - (Can - Home) (Chicago, IL) Can Notes:
Purchased single can on December 13, 2024 at Beer on the Wall Park Ridge. Purchased at store temperature for $5.69 including tax, refrigerated upon returning home before opening this morning. 16 oz canned 12/05/24, 8.2% Double Hazy IPA, collaboration with Gnosis Brewing. Design by Ness. Brewed and packaged by Riverland Brewing Company, 1860 Dean Street, Saint Charles, Illinois.

Brewed with the gang over at Gnosis Brewing, West By Northwest is a Double New England style India Pale Ale, double dry hopped with Motueka, Citra, and Nelson Sauvin hops. When it's time to go incognito and fly under the radar, you know we always have your back. While it's no secret that this collab brew is a real thriller - packed with bold, breathtaking flavors - you will still want to make sure you share this with someone you trust.

    Appearance:
Initial pour of 1/2 of can into a shaker pint glass. Bright puffy bubbly white head lingers for a few minutes minutes before leaving a generous luxuriously cream cover over the completely murky orange/pineapple juice base, and substantial soapy lacing in its wake. 4.0

    Aroma:
Tropical flavors citrus, pineapple and tangerine my take and consistent with expectations for the style. Sweet, but not fearing cloying, strength medium plus and pleasant. 4.0

    Taste:
Mirror image of the aroma. Tangerine, citrus and pineapple, cane sugar, very sweet. Beyond minor hop burn, nothing to contain it, but enjoying. 3.75

    Mouthfeel:
Sweet with faint light bitterness as it warms. Drinks lighter and easier than expected with the higher ABV. Faint gentle carbonation, medium body like a juice, sugar enhances perceived depth. Pineapple tangerine and citrus from start to sweet finish. 3.5

    Overall:
This is a solid offering, consistent with the style. Though sweeter than my typical likes, grading as the style warrants, and this warrants a good score for what they accomplished here. Good offering, not necessarily a go to, but nice for an occasional treat. 3.75

That's a wrap on drinking, though plan on enjoying your entries today. Will see what I'm in the mood for next weekend, drink fresh or BA. Nice to have options.

A Merry Christmas to all who celebrate, and see you next weekend!

Hello NBW, sorry I don’t have any new beer to brag about, but was lurking and this one interested me.

Hooked up @beergoot with it near two years ago in a trade, his review seems to match yours, mine too. Good beer, though strong. I was probably expecting more.

    Thank you!

My Polish in-laws serve pierogi every Christmas Eve. This is the first year they decided / were equipped to make them from scratch. MIL and FIL came over to help my wife make them yesterday. My wife knows how to cook. My MIL does not. She also frets, can't shut up, can't listen, and despite the best intentions, makes everything much, much harder than it needs to be. This results in wife and FIL yelling at her. Go back to the "can't listen" portion of the paragraph, and repeat.

So, so sad that I missed a couple hours of that glorious family time. But, @Beersnake needed me. I took one in the name of beer advocacy.

Thinking seriously about an early join to the festivities if I have a coffee stout in the fridge...

    From a 16oz can. Packaged on October 2nd, 2024.

There was a weird ass hiss upon opening the can, because of the nitro. This is a fairly clear dark amber colored beer. The head is the star of the show because of how creamy it looks from the nitro. It is 1 finger and cream colored. The head is VERY long lasting, and There's some lacing on the glass.
The aroma is so damn faint. I am just getting the faintest hint of peppermint off it.
The flavor is, like the nose, faint. I just get a faint peppermint flavor here. There's also a faint caramel grain flavor in this beer.
The body is so damn smooth and creamy feeling. There's no alcohol burn in this beer.
It looks and feels good, but the rest is a bit of a let down.

    Be back later for more.

Southern Tier Juice Jolt Extra Juicy IPA 6.8%. 1st time trying this brewery. Someone brought a mixed pack and nobody drank it. At my cousin's where we were already drinking Maine Wolfe's Neck IPA which is a new beer for me, and Heady Topper which I've had a few times but it was a new beer for the others. The beer shop in Washington PA had heady, focal banger and a couple from Maine (no lunch). I loved the Heady and Wolf's neck. Wolf's Neck reminded me of old Alpine beers but i prefer Lunch. The southern tier seems to be lacking in the quality dept. Tastes like tang. It gets bad reviews but I think it's ok. I'll take one for the team and drink the southern tier mix pack.

Poured from an undated 16 oz can into the test glass.
A - Orangy/copper colored backdrop with nice clarity. Gentle train of carbonation procedes topside, to form a thin ring and islands.
S - Start off is nutmeg, cinnamon, then citrussy orange steps in. As the offering warms, a lovely malt, cereal thread is balancing against orange pith.
T - Follows the aromatics, with the spices up front, and more of the malt coming through
M - Medium in body, semi sweet, then a spicy peppery wave, Finish is nicely dry. Linger is sweet maltiness
O - A very good winter warmer, the orange, and spices balance quite well against the base beer
