    somewhere since from everywhere beer

Export Lager. Pine aroma with a touch of browned biscuits. Crisp and sudsy mouthfeel. Some sweet malt and a cereal flavor, but a tangy and resiny finish. Rather bitter, piney aftertaste for such a light brew. Makes me think of a rye beer. Overall this is quite quaffable and an interesting style of Lager, like a lighter-weight Pilsner-- but stronger and just as bitter.

    A ‘middle-early’ sort of beer

Today’s new beer is Human Robot Hallertau Pils which features Hallertau Mittelfrüh hops. The Hallertau part of that hop variety name refers to the region in Germany where the hops are grown and the Mittelfrüh part refers to a harvest timing:

“Its name derives from the Hallertau in Germany, the world's largest hop growing region, and from its optimum harvest time in the early middle of the growing season (Mittelfrüh means “middle-early”).”

Hallertau Mittelfrüh is a favorite noble hop for me, a hop that I choose to feature in my annual homebrew of Classic American Pilsner, so I have high hopes for this beer.

Below is how this beer is described on the Human Robot website:

“5.2% - German Style Pils - Hallertau pils is brewed as an ode to the industrial German pilsners of the 50’s to the late 70’s when technology allowed more efficient processes, but the liquid was still brewed “the old way”. We use a double decoction mash, 100% German Pilsner malt, and 100% German Hallertau Mittlefru hops.”

Served in my Polish Pilsner glass:

    Appearance:

Straw yellow in color with a billowy white head.

    Aroma:

A combination of hop aromas of herbal/spicy and a bit of floral as well with bready malt aroma.

    Taste:

The flavor follows the nose with herbal/spicy hop flavors with just a bit of floral in the background. There is a bready/cracker-like malt flavor with a sensation of richness. There is a moderate bitterness.

    Mouthfeel:

Medium bodied with a medium carbonation level. There is a dry finish.

    Overall:

This beer is very good – excellent. I appreciated the nice balance of hop and malt flavors.

    Prost!

P.S. I will once again be attending the annual German Bierfest event later this month at the Pennsylvania German Historical Society in Philadelphia. In the past Human Robot would show up with some of their beers served in small firkins served via gravity pours. Maybe this year they will show up with one of their large wooden barrels? Below is a photo of that barrel which they brought last year to the annual Logjammin’ Lager Beer Festival in Philadelphia (happens in June).

Drinking Grosshandlarens Premium Lager. 5.7% abv. 13% plato. Pilsner and Munich malt. Herkules, Perle and Spalter Select hops. This is a bit of an interesting beer which was launched by a beer importer a few years ago, brewed by one of the Swedish macros as a contract beer (which just so happens to brew a beer at 5.7% abv using the same malt and hop varieties, using a single decoction mash process, only lighter in color and being sold as a stronger pilsner type beer) and which won a tender for sale through the monopoly stores where it has managed to survive for a number of years by now which is unusual for a new brand of beer. Deservedly so in my opinion since I think it is a really nice beer. It is a higher gravity lager beer (at 13% plato) with a good amount of bready Munich malt flavor, without the presence of roasted malt flavors which is unusual for a beer of this color. The taste is balanced between the malt flavor and a refreshing hop bitterness (likely around 30 IBUs) and a moderate amount of herbal hop flavor and aroma.

I think it is a really tasty "Lager Beer" which I think has some old school aspects to it. It is not simply a modern dark colored light beer. It has some heft to it, in terms of both malt and hops.

Will I get laughed off of here if I admit to liking beer from Aldi? Specifically Wernesgrüner Dark.

Unfortunately the Aldi stores in Maryland can’t sell beer or wine, or I would try it.
My wife likes to shop at the local Aldi, we’ve always found their various store brands to be as good, or better than most national brands.
    And reasonably priced.

It appears other BAs might like it as well.

I have not had the pleasure of drinking that beer but regardless I will not laugh at you.

Please continue to discuss the beers you enjoy drinking.

No, you won't get laughed at for that admission. We're a pretty even-keeled group here, and we recognize beer can be good from any source. Aldi beers get many favorable comments on the site, and here's a link to a thread from 2000 that will illustrate that point.

Also, welcome to the site. Join in the discussions in the forums, but also explore to find the many other features. If you have questions, do a search in the appropriate forum first for the answer because many basic questions get asked often. Start a new thread if you can't connect to an answer. Love the Wernesgrüner Pils and really want to try the Dark soon.

Some of Aldi's other offerings are pretty blah, though.

A Checkerspot “395 Rye” Lager I had last evening.
    A very tasty Lager!

A Maryland style Rye Amber Lager celebrating the heritage of MD style rye whiskey ingredients. Local Bear Branch rye for a nice bite and corn to smooth it all out. A refreshing and dry rye finish.

    Pfeiffer's Famous Lager from Anaheim

Pleasant cereal aroma with a resiny nose. Crisp, light, and spritzy on the tongue. Though it's not very hoppy there is enough herbal hint to give it some complexity. Overall this is a definite improvement on the industrial lagers, and both enjoyable and highly quaffable.

Enjoying this outstanding Pilsner from Zillicoah in Woodfin, NC. Lots of classic Czech Pils flavor in a small 3.5% abv package.

Crone Zone Lager from Harland in San Diego

Slight beery aroma but enlivened by the fruity hop nose. This has an odd winey note, and more sweetness that is good for it. Quite drinkable but it tastes exactly like a Blonde Ale-- malty and flabby with a touch of astringency. The hoppy aromatics do save it from blandness, however, and the slight hoppy aftertaste if pleasant. Canned 01/09/26.

I've been pretty lax in reporting my lager love in 2026, so far.

I really blame it on my old computer system that's stopped recognizing IMGUR, so I haven't been able to share pics.

Nonetheless, I visited my local(ish) favorite brewery this week and enjoyed the fruits of their very skilled labor.

Roaring Table's Helles, Canadian Girlfriend Schwarzbier, and Concordance Bohemian Pilsner are quite delicious and so well crafted. As a lager lover, I feel very fortunate to have their beers available to me these days.
