but he's a different Jeff? I ask because he just quoted (or paraphrased) Renner's sign-off line over the years at HBD--a quote from "American Jazz Musician Fats Waller, 1904-1943."

None of my business, if anonymity is the goal.

Well, I guess all the judges at GABF thought Hop Juju was a "tad better" than a beer someone would "not go out of their way to land" as you put it....hmmm, 2 Gold medals, in 3 years, for DIPA, a very competitive category indeed. I am indeed happy to have such "local" and award winning beers readily available to me here in the Buckeye state.

No about, 25 miles away, same club, so I have been reading that tag line for years, thought I would use it.

My last name begins with an R, but it is another German name.

    Will send you a mail.

Dude, on the DL - we need to keep it a SW treat so we can get our hands on it... regularly. But yeah, well deserved.

Agreed, all I was saying is that none of the NE breweries appeared to enter their beers in GABF and I think based on the style they would not win based on the turbidity. That being said the IPA gold medal went to a brewery in San Diego that no one goes to so go figure... (at least Societe won gold in the session catagory since they have been killing it lately)

Thanks for posting that. I have never seen a BeerAdvocate shelf talker anywhere, and you can bet I'll be watching for them now.

As for the Robert Parker/Wine Enthusiast analogy for BeerAdvocate ratings...good god I hope not, but the way craft beer is going it may be only a matter of time.

A couple places up here use either BA or RB shelf cards, depending on which site has the higher score for a beer. To me, that's more evidence that the ratings are meaningless. YMMV.

One chain that uses them in many stores is Total Wine but I think you'd have to go to Washington to find one as I don't recall that they are in oregon.

If you go to this page:
    http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/345/1010/

on the right side of the page you can see a print command and that will show you what they may look like.

But the Robert Parker model doesn't fit since these would be consumer oriented ratings based on the reviews/ratings by the consumers who use this site. A different sort of animal in my view.

So to ask a silly, rhetorical question, why don't they call them vegetable beers?

To clarify, Total Wine & More does not use the BA shelf talkers. The shelf sign product descriptions at Total Wine are produced in house by the home office. These same descriptions appear on the Website. There is a rating/score field for which the BA Overall score (88 or higher) is displayed on the shelf sign for many beers (The DRAFT or Beer Connoisseur score may alternately be displayed for reference in lieu of BA). It is just there as a reference point; helpful to many non-BA beer shoppers.

Marketing? You could ask the BA.

Because things like cucumbers are fruits, not vegetables, but most people wouldn't want to lump a cucumber saison into the fruit beer category.

Out of the 275 beers listed, I can go to a local beer store and buy about 20 of them.
