I've been meaning to try some of the newer house brands, but I usually end up going to a regular liquor retailer (or some place closer) when I'm restocking.

That said, Wernesgruner Pils has been historically good.

I am also an advocate for Wernesgruner.

+1 for Wernesgruner Pilsner. I have also been drinking Wild Range IPA and Holland 1839 Lager. Wild Range is an old school IPA (not cloudy), which I greatly prefer and tbh, are more rare these days. Holland 1839 Lager looks and tastes like Heineken, but I have not done a side x side. I will continue to purchase all three of these beers.

Any popular beers you would say it's similar to? Bottles/cans dated? I don't do hazies so I'm interested in this.

Same ballpark as Great Lakes Commodore Perry and DFH 60 minute. Probably not on same team in said ballpark. 12oz bottles/6 pack. No bottle date that I could find. Just drink ‘em up and enjoy!

The selection at my Aldi is ok. It’s got Wernesgrüner and Imperium, two lagers I really enjoy. They also have a Shiner Bock clone. I might’ve seen Hollandia and Bacher, too, but I don’t care for those as much. If anything, I wish they had more variety and used their distribution clout to import more labels from Germany. I’d appreciate a solid supply of Weißbier or Dunkel, for example.

They had a Wernesgruner Dark for a while -- it was pretty good. Don't know why it's gone, sales?

For me I'm amazed at the horrible beer and wine selection at Aldi. They're usually on top of these things. The faux brands sit forever, they could certainly get reputable breweries and some US wineries (a la Trader Joe's) to supply better stuff into their locations. Just my $.02

Its a "special buy" they only bring it in for a couple weeks periodically ... same as the Licher hefeweizen

Yes, one thing TJ's does great (on top of everything else, except for food lifespans - but maybe less preservatives are better for us anyway?) is that they are really good at encouraging craft beer, as well as getting the imports that are otherwise hard to find elsewhere. This is, of course, regional: DC had a great selection, and I lived in a part of town with a lot embassies, so a very cosmopolitan selection. The Nashville TJ's I go to, however, has a much smaller and less diverse selection of beer.

When I was in DC, I was amazed to see that they pretty much had my entire side of the city's stock of Ayinger Oktoberfest when it dropped last September, fresh in the four-pack cases.

Not all TJ's beer is great though: the Minhas brands like Simpler Times are notoriously terrible.

We will soon have our fourth Aldi. They must do quite well here. The one we shop at is a mile from Trader Joe's, where wine is the name of the game. They do a good job.

Got to agree with Snowcrash000, Hungary where I come from or Austria where I used to live both have decent (German) beer in Aldi for dirt cheap - could be a European thing. Maybe about 10% was imported but rotating so it was fun to see what new they had next. Anyway, Aldi used to be one of my go to places for cheap but still good beer, lagers, pilsners, bocks, marzen and the like (Lidl was the other one,) thought in the US they had the same variety of beers. Bummer.

Source? Aldi is so secretive with their "processes," how did you learn this?

Like to know what happened to the canned Bocks they used to shelve every spring.

My wife and I have been trying to find a good drinking, low-priced Chardonnay and have tried a few from TJ's -- but none are any better than Winking Owl from Aldi (made by Gallo).

And yeah, I know there are better chardonnays out there, we really like Bread & Butter, but not in the same price point.

Too bad they cut down the Josephsbrau labels so drastically -- maybe just my area, but I miss the Maibock and Doppelbock.

And Minhas? Uh... no. Nothing I've tried from them is any good. If anyone is highly sensitive to diacetyl, stay away from Minhas.

It said it on their website. You can look up their "special buys" each week and periodically they have beer/wine under the special buys. All their special buys are things that are brought in and then only last until that shipments sells out.

The Minhas stuff shows up at Aldi and Costco. A few years ago they did the Kirkland AAL in regular and light, both 30 pks. I think the case was like $15 so I had to try it as lawnmower beer and it was beyond atrocious. When I see their name on anything, or some unknown brewery out of Monroe WI, I refuse to buy.
