How about Western PA? I would love to try the Andechs lineup...

Check your local Whole Foods, the Andech's line is running in NYC WFs.

I got some DB Dunk in the fridge, probably drink it before the weekend.

    Happy Hunting.

Btw...anyone know how to decipher the Andech's date coding? Thanks, kp.

    I think Celebrator is overrated.

The first taste is fine but it does something to the taste buds so subsequent swigs have no flavor.

Too many other solid DBs out there.

I believe it's either dddy, so 3653 would be Dec. 31, 2013, or it might possibly be by CW (calendar week)- popular usage in Germany as well. Hope that might help shine some light on it?

I think if you come across Hoffstetten's Granitbok with some time behind it, I'm getting 6/13 bottles now @WFs in NYC, it's worth a shot even at $6 per.

Refined sweetness with a granite finish, unbelievable. I also tried the ICE version with 3 years behind it, not so good...much sweeter and no hint of the granite. Oh well, at least it didn't kill me.

    Ok.

The bottles I have start with L followed by the 4 digits, confused the heck out of me.

You wouldn't know how to read Wienstephaner's coding?

    Thanks, kp.

    Thanks SC.

So the first digit is basically a throw away, the second and third give you the week, and the fourth is the year.

    Awesome, kp.

Aecht Schlenkerla? I don't think they date code.

Definitely not dddy, a number of the Weinstephaner bottles at Whole Foods on Houston St in NYC start with 7 and 9. Also, as far as I could determine, all the bottles on the shelves ended in 4 and all showed the middle two numbers as 0#.

So for now I'm going with dwwy, although I'll be watching for mm to replace ww. I can't determine this yet because it's still too early in the year.

As for Schlenkerla...I went to the above-mentioned WFs yesterday and the salesman was price tagging a case of the Urbock. I took one out to check the ABV and noticed something new on the back label, RC was stamped on it.
I never saw this before and am pretty sure it's somewhat new. I checked the Marzen and Weisse and they also had two letter codes stamped on them, not RC though. Anyone know about these 2 letter codes?

    Thanks BAs, kp.

Closest I've seen it to Lancaster is at Chester County Beverage on route 30 in Parkersburg. Call ahead and they can order cases of the various styles. I particularly like the Andechs Doppelbock.

Can someone explain the sudden Andechs buzz? Did they only recently begin importing? Are they here to stay or is it "get it while it lasts"?

If the bottles you saw all had 4-digit codes with the middle 2 being 0, what week of the year would that be?

Why assume Andechs uses the same coding system as Weihenstephaner? I suppose they could've changed their system since the bottle I purchased left the brewery. But, if you read the whole thread I linked to above, I actually contacted Andechs via their website. In their reply they confirmed that my bottle, coded 3013, was bottled on October 28, the 301st day of 2013 (dddy), NOT January 3, 2013 (dwwy). Can't see any reason they'd lie about something like that. I guess there's also the possibility that the person who contacted me was misinformed. Perhaps you should contact Andechs to verify.

I bought a bottle of the Hefe today, I'll give it a go. I almost bought the Doppelbock but I'm not the hugest fan of Dbs, so I'll see how the Hefe goes.

Keith, what is the bottle date of your Hefeweizen? My Andechs Hefeweizen had a bottle date of 1703 which I am pretty sure means 170th day of 2013 (June 19, 2013) so that bottle as about 10 months old. That is much, much older that I prefer my Hefeweizen beers, Despite the old age I enjoyed drinking that beer. I can only guess at what it would have tasted like if it was fresher?

    Cheers!

P.S. My Andechs Doppelbock was bottled on 3013 (Oct. 28, 2013).

I'll check it tonight Jack, I didn't really look. Where is the code?

Keith, it is at the bottom of the back label within a white 'box'. My Hefeweizen has a code of "L 1703". When I was at Wegmans I was so thrilled to simply see these beers on the shelf I didn't even think about looking for a date. If I did take note of the date on the hefeweizen I would have not purchased it since it is so old.

As I posted previously I enjoyed drinking this particular beer but it was not worth 5 bucks for the 500 mL bottle. Maybe a fresh(er) bottle would be worth the 5 bucks?

    Cheers!

I probably got the same codes, or similar I would think. I'll check tonight and probably drink it this weekend.

Thanks Jack, I'll keep you posted.
