I am taking a pretty serious road trip in mid-August from Colorado Springs ---> Missoula, MT ---> Tacoma/Seattle, WA ---> Portland/Bend, OR (and back home). I will definitely be in Missoula from the 13-16 and looking at getting in WA on the 17th. I would like to spend two or three days in WA and another day or two in Portland, but I am pretty flexible.

I guess my question is, do most breweries have week-day hours and what would be some absolute can't-miss stops? I definitely want to hit Freemont and Hair of the Dog and would really like to see The Ale Apothecary in Bend if I can swing it. I understand there are a lot of thread similar to this one and I have been reading through a few, but I'd really appreciate some specific feedback for this time of year / those particular dates. Any great local events going on that week?

Any insight or advise is welcome and any BAs that are interested, feel free to BM me about some IP trades for Colorado beer!

    Dan

Fremont's Urban Beer Garden opens at 11 a.m., seven days a week. I can't think of many (any?) places that are open only on weekends.

Good to hear since the timing just won't really work out for me to be in town for a weekend.

Sounds like you'll just mss the annual Bend Beer Fest (8/13 - 8/16. Just my two cents SR, but if you're only going to be in town (PDX) for a couple days, I don't think you need to worry about any festivals. As the date gets close to when you're going to arrive, maybe check the Belmont Station website, as they often have tasting during the week, but otherwise, I think you'll be more than busy enough just checking out the local beer scene the short time you're here. I also would highly recommend against heading up to Bend during your short stay, as that will easily kill between 5 and 6 hours (driving time) of your short stay here.

I'm sure you've looked at this thread, but it really is an outstanding resource, and the information and places limited therein should keep you more than busy enough during your brief vist. Good luck, and have fun.

If I understand your itinerary, you'd be hitting Bend on your way back to CO, yes? If you're not already planning to, you should hit Hood River on your way to Bend if only for Pfriem (though Double Mtn and Logsdon are other worthy candidates in the area). It doesn't look like Yakima is easy for you to hit either to Seattle or heading back East, so you should grab Bale Breaker cans while you're in Seattle.

As for Bend, here's my attempt to copy the Portland guide: http://www.beeradvocate.com/community/threads/visiting-bend-sunriver.190266/

Ale Apothecary is by appointment only (it's also his house), so get in touch with Paul now and see if it works.

John, I agree that a festival is not a priority (honestly not even a consideration); I would much prefer to spend my time at a small brewery or taproom being able to converse with the locals, actually have a good discussion about beer, and be able to sip and enjoy what I am drinking. A tasting, however, could be a great time, so I will definitely check into Belmont Station.

Sharpski, I will look into all of those mentioned, and I understand the constraints of Ale Apothecary (read it on the website) so I will certainly take your advice and contact him now. Bend is going to be a long leg of travel on the way home if I decide to make the stop, but I feel it'd be worth it if I was able to see AA... If not though, is there any chance of finding some of their bottle in stores in Portland? I got the impression that his releases were sporadic and very limited and the best way to actually get bottles was to arrange a visit.

Bottles do make it to Portland, though it's my understanding that they don't usually last long there(I think it's usually days/weeks rather than hours, but a PDX local can probably give you better insight). With the release of his new beer, Be Still, you may be arriving at a good time to catch bottles in PDX.

For the most part, you will be able to find Bend's finest like Boneyard, Crux, 10 Barrel in PDX and Seattle, the main exceptions being Bend Brewing,Below Grade, and the brewery nobody hypes but you stumble upon and think is awesome. I still think your road trip would be incomplete without a stop in Bend, but it's understandable if your route makes that difficult.

But he says he's arriving on a Sunday and many places are closed Monday - Wednesday. Reuben's for one. Fremont, Black Raven, Elysian, Naked City are must sees and are open 7 days a week.

^^What's the general consensus on Black Raven? I know a guy in Tacoma who swears up and down they're terrible, but their tap list is right up my alley style-wise and I've heard a lot of good things as well. Either way, will probably hit them up along with Fremont, though I am kinda bummed I won't be able to make it to Reuben's.

I think I am going to slightly adjust my schedule too and spend more time in Portland than Seattle...

Frankly I guess I have no idea when places are open during the week. I've got a job and family that manage to keep me fully occupied Monday through Friday...

Does this guy in Tacoma like beer? I think the general consensus is that Black Raven is in the top tier of breweries in the entire state. But yeah, Portland is probably more of a beer destination than Seattle.

Black Raven, terrible? Now that's crazy talk. I don't find their IPA's that spectacular, but the rest of their beers are beyond very good. Many people bash them due to their location and clientele. I would say they're a must visit for any visitor. Hi-Fi Brewing, which is decent, is right across the street also.

Spending more time in Portland is a wise decision. They have more unique breweries that step outside the box of brewing just the usual IPA's, Pales, Ambers, Stouts....

Haha yeah he is definitely a beer fan and fellow home brewer. Taste is highly subjective though so I guess not everyone can like everything the same. Black Raven will definitely be a stop for me, I just can't pass up some of those beers...

I've got more friends in Seattle so I have definitely pads to crash at, but the beer in Portland just sounds more appealing so I guess a hotel is in order. Either that or I bring my backpacking gear and camp out in a parking lot lol. BRB cooking breakfast in my JetBoil waiting for breweries to open...

I made my first trip there recently with high expectations. I thought the atmosphere was boring/sterile, the service awful and the beer barely above average. I wont go out of my way again.

Depending on where one stands on the issue, most people seem to think that the title of 'Best Brewery in Washington" comes down to Black Raven or Fremont. Admittedly, their tasting room/brewery is in a business park, so not the most Northwest-ish of atmospheres, and the place does tend to fill up with folks from a certain very large software company just down the road, but I've enjoyed my visits well enough.

Plus, they've got a decent barrel program going, so there's a good chance you might find a treat on tap while you're there. There are some other breweries in that Redmond-Bothell-Woodinville area, ya might want to check some of those out as well.

The one time I went, I sat at the bar, where I had pretty decent service. Otherwise, I can't really disagree with your observations regarding the location. As for the quality of their beer, I liked most of what I had the one time I stopped by. Nothing I tried was exactly a life altering experience, but the line-up was pretty solid, and I don't recall any outright duds.

For me it was worth it to visit, as I wanted to learn more about their beers, and other than the trickster IPA, I almost never see any of their stuff around (at least not down in Tacoma). So in that regard, I was glad I made the trip up from University Place.

That being said, it was a total pain in the ass to drive up there from Tacoma/UP, and I have no plans to ever head up that way again (the beer there was good, but I didn't feel it was THAT good). So for the OP, I guess it depends on how much interest he has in Black Raven beers. If he has the time and inclination, I'd recommend he make the trip over to Redmond. On the other hand, if it's a huge inconvenience to get over there, then I don't think it wll exactly ruin his trip if he drops BR from his intinerary.

If you make it to Black Raven you should also check out Triplehorn in Woodinville. I would say they're on the same level as BR with some different options.
It's in the Woodinville industrial 'winery' area. Lots of wineries and distilleries to check out as well.

Awesome, thanks for all the feedback thus far. As my tripis getting closer I should be finalizing (or close to finalizing) a by-day schedule very soon!

On your way from Missoula to Seattle, you can stop at Selkirk Abbey in Post Falls.

Leaving next week for this trip and finally geting my ducks in a row as far as when I will be where. Missoula from 14-16, Seattle/Tacoma from 17-18, Portland 19-20, and then to Bend for at least a day if not two. Very excited!
