I couldn't say about what they served in the past, but they currently serve just the Helles vom holzfass. http://augustiner-wirtschaft.de/getraenkekarte-3/

    Bräustuben: http://www.braeustuben.de/getraenke.php

This is anecdotal, but I've not seen or been to a place serving anything other than a helles or an exportbier from the wood.

No argument from me there. He should go to Der Pschorr and Ayingers Speis und Trank for more beer from the wood--and the Hofbrauhaus too.

I've probably consumed 90% of my Augustiner beers at the Am Dom and the Grossgastatte locations. Am Dom is only about 100 feet from Andechser Am Dom, so that's a very easy either/or. Especially considering how crowded both can be. Both of those have draft helles and dunkel with the weiss, pils, and edelstoff available in bottles.

Augustiner Salzburg serves their Märzen from the wood, and you can see the Festbier at the Wies'n above -- but I guess those could really fall into the "Export" category if you pick nits.

It looks like I'll be in Munich on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, the 19th through 21st. I can't remember when we'd planned to go to Oktoberfest but I'm pretty sure it was Wednesday and/or Thursday. Of course that gives me Tuesday to hit all of the regulars while the larger crowd is still there... not sure if that's good or bad.

Drinking beer in Munich and you sound that skeptical? It's all good, deep breath and dive in!

The little pissoirs by the street? Seemed okay to me...but I may have been a little, uh, beschwipst.

Coming from the entrance closest to the Hauptbahnhof, they're in the far back/left. They're behind and to the left of the biergarten vending areas. They look pretty typical on the outside.

Wow, lots of chatter on Augustiner in Munich. While we're on topic, can someone clarify which location is the one with the holzfass/anstich in the basement by the spiral staircase? I've been the last two times and I've always thought it was the am Dom location. But the am Platzl looks close as well.

Sounds like Am Dom to me.

No one serves vom Fass at Oktoberfest any more.

EDIT - just Googled this and saw that Augustiner is still doing it. My bad. I tip my hat to them.

All three are great choices and all are run by the same organization headed by Manfred Vollmer. The beer is cheapest at the Braeustuben. It's a boisterous atmosphere and can be a lot of fun! The food is also inexpensive - not the best of the three, but it's OK. Another great place to drink Augustiner is at the Bier & Oktoberfest Museum - lots and lots of locals there. Also, if the weather is good, combine a visit to Nymphenburg Palace with a stop at the Hirschgarten - Augustiner from a huge wooden keg, rinse your own glass, and lovely biergarten. And don't miss going to the Holy Mountain - Kloster Andechs

For the other places you mentioned:
    • Zugspitze - it's expensive to get to the top, so only do it if the weather is decent.
    • Fuessen - Try the Koenig Ludwig Dunkles, Schnitzel at Hotel Ruchti, and head out to Speiden and have the fantastic beer at Maria Hilfer Sudhaus
    • Rothenburg is the beer wasteland - mainly wine up that way. The food and wine at Hotel Glocke is amazing.
    • Bamberg is the promised land for a beer drinker. In addition to the typical (and awesome) choices, go up to the Spezi Keller if the weather is nice.
    Viel Spass in Muenchen!
    Scott

    Nevermind -
after some google searching, turns out it's the Klosterwirt, which is also right at the foot of the Frauenkirche. Can anyone confirm if the Am Dom and Braeustuben also both serve the lager from the wood?
