Andechser am Dom

A good stop if you don't have time to go to the Monastery. They moved into this building about 8 years ago and they were about 50 meters away before. Most of the Andechs can be found here. The food and service are both good. Outdoor seating is the best.

Typical Munich pub, which is a compliment. I appreciate the diversity of styles. Andescher quality is top-notch, led of course by the legendary doppelbock. Service was prompt, and this is probably my favorite place to visit in Munich.

Visited with my wife on a recent trip to Brussels and Munich.

Beers ranged from good to fantastic.

For dinner I had the crispy pork knuckle with beer gravy, potato dumplings, and green cabbage salad; it was delectable. My wife liked her pork schnitzel, spaetzle, and Aperol Spritz cocktails.

Warm and inviting atmosphere in the restaurant; we enjoyed our cozy table by the window.

Service was solid as the waitress did an admirable job of describing the beers and everything arrived in reasonable time. After dinner we quaffed our final drink in the bar where we had a great conversation with the waiter.

Our overall experience was outstanding, and we would definitely come back.

I stopped at Andechser am Dom several times last year while in Munich because the atmosphere was so comfortable (I always sat inside), and the food was great. It was some of the best food that I've had in all of Germany! I also felt the beer selection was more than adequate - 7 beers from Andechs including the doppelbock.

The outdoor seating is nice, but inside beneath the vaulted ceiling on study wooden chairs, benches, and tables is the place to be. Highly recommended!

 

 

This is by far one of the best places in Munich City Center. All the the Andech's Beer are great with the Dopplebock being the crown jewel. The place to be is the covered outside patio on the alley side of the establishment. You will meet all kinds of people out there both locals and tourists. Very sad news is that a developer has bought the space and is knocking down the place in June to build a retail outlet for the local football team. I am typing this with a tear in my eye as this will truly be missed by me and the people in the know in Munich. So if you have not been here---get here by the end of June for great beer and a lively Munich crowd.

This popular restaurant can be found behind the majestic Frauenkirche; but, its' popularity means it is very crowded throughout the day. (I tried to reserve space online, but got no response.) However, there is an outdoor section on the side that was covered to ward off the autumn chill. Though small, and furnished with a few hightop tables, I did find a seat, where I was able to enjoy a superb half-liter of helles along with a hearty platy of spicy sausages. A wonderful lunch!

We stopped here for dinner and beers after being out on a day trip from town. The place was busy so we were seated in the lower level. A large biergarten is located at the front of the building, but it was a chilly day and no one was out there. We liked the vibe on the main level as well as the lower level. I didn't note a bar anywhere, so no quick beers here while chatting with a bartender. Even though the place was busy, we received very good service.

There were four beers on tap – Helles, Dopplebock, Weissbier and a Weissbier Dunkel – plus a radler, two alcohol-free beers and a low-alcohol offering. We chose the weissbier and the bock. Both were brewed very well to style, but we liked the bock just a bit better. We gave an overall grade of B+ to the beers.

The food here was also very good, and we also gave it a B+ grade. They accept credit cards here. It's another great place for beer and food, so it's highly recommended.

How have I never rated this before now? I stopped here for the umpteenth time during my latest business trip, and I felt compelled to mention 2 things:
1. Andechs has some of the best beers in Munich, of course
2. Andechs has some of the worst service in the city center

I'm not sure why, but I keep getting strangely bad service here (as compared with EVERYWHERE ELSE in the city center). But the beer is good and the wonderful monastery is too far away so what the hell.

 

 

 

 

A very small beer selection but that includes their very nice Doppelbock. It was the only beer I tried but it was well worth the visit.In a nice location in the city center so not too far out of the way. I did not eat. The service was ok. It was quiet in the middle of the day. The menu looks like typical German fare. Reasonable priced for a city center place.

 

 

 

Beer only: Andechs Doppel Bock. The restaurant is located a couple blocks from Marienplatz (city center) at the back of the big twin-spired Church of Our Lady. It can be very hard to get a table as evening approaches. A great place to enjoy an excellent beer.

In Munich for a week on a work trip, I probably don't have time to visit Kloster Andechs, so this is supposed to be the next best thing. The place was a little hard to find, as I walked up and down Weinstrasse before figuring out it was actually on a sidestreet. The place was packed at 10 pm on a Saturday night. No seats anywhere, and they don't have a bar. You either sit at a table and the waitress comes around or you stand and flag down a waitress.

I stood in the very crowded room with all the people that were just drinking, not having dinner. A little smoky and pretty loud in there, but everyone was having a good time. I asked the waitress walking by for a Doppelbock Dunkel and she brought it fairly quickly. I was surprised that it was only 4 Euros for a 0.5 L glass. I had just paid 5,50 for lesser beers elsewhere around this area. The beer was extremely tasty and probably the best I've had of this style. I would have stayed longer but had already had a few before walking in here and it would have been better if they had a bar where I could have sat. I think I may go back tomorrow earlier and grab some food and try a couple more of their beers. I recommend this place if you're in Munich.

I was still feeling the effects of jet lag, and drinking four beers at Weisses Brauhaus was enough to knock me out for the afternoon. Here comes the evening, but I promise that I have enough charge for several rounds. Where do I turn? No, not that church, the church on the left. Ok, follow alongside it, boom! Two choices now, Andechser or Augustiner? Oh, I'm walking towards Andechser....

It was in the 40s, so I went straight inside looking for a seat. No, no seats. I'm going back outside on the patio for an empty seat. Lots of tables in front of the restaurant, half of them unoccupied at the time. There's a lot to look at in the surrounding area outside, most notably that big church. Wait, wait, wait, here comes a waitress. This would be a theme during my stay; polite and knowledgable, though a little slow to check my status.

Four beers available, all from the tap; helles, doppelbock dunkel, weiss, and dunkelweizen. Multiple sizes are offered for each beer, as is matching glassware. In general, the beer was very good, with the weiss, not the doppelbock, being my flavorite of the group. Half-liter pours run between €3.80-4.00, depending which beer you purchase.

If you don't have the resources to make a trip to the brewery itself (like I did), then consider Andechser am Dom your shortcut to Andechs beer.

The decor is authentic bavarian and is very comfortable. The place was crowded so we were seated in the basement which is like a cozy dungeon/wine cellar with heavy wooden tables and benches. The beer was great and the duck that I had there was top notch. Other member of my party had the saurbraten which was excellent as well. Like everywhere else in Munich, service was terrible. The wait staff are very slow and do not pay you much attention, but this should be over looked as all of germany seemed this way, beside the Lowenbrau place near the Viktulien market. Great Beers.... Great Food...

We were really looking forward to trying some Andescher beers and also getting some food. We got there around noon on the last Sunday in October and sat outside. It seemed to be busy enough in the outside area but there were plenty of open tables and at least five different servers outside. We sat down and waited...and waited...and waited some more.

A British family next to us said they had asked their waiter for the bill thirty minutes prior. The server had also gotten their food order horribly wrong. A couple German women who sat down at a nearby table ten minutes after we got there left after fifteen minutes of not being acknowledged.

After twenty-five minutes of not being acknowledged, my wife politely asked a server if we could have a couple menus. Fifteen minutes later (still no greeting or menus) we left and went to Augustiner. In summation, we waited forty minutes and were not even approached by any staff member. Their beers may be good, but it was obvious that on at least this day, the staff members were not interested in serving them to us or a number of other people. I really want to believe we just caught them on an off day.

My co-workers and I were hungry, and I've been pimping this place to them for weeks before coming on this business trip, so their expectations are high. I've never been at this restaurant myself, but I have been at the Kloster itself and it rocked, so how can this place dissapoint?

It didn't. We sat outside with a nice older German couple who even though were at dessert when we arrived stuck around with us to chat until we were done. That put off two of my co-workers who weren't used to being seated with strangers, but they eventually had a good time.

Menu is classical German fare, so pork, pork and more pork. Oh yeah. I was able to squeeze in a cheese plate for desert which was great.

Service was okay, considering the place was packed, both inside and out.

Beer selection was (obviously) from Andechs, and the Doppelbock was just excellent. The girls enjoyed their Weiss.

The dopplebock was just as good as at the Klosterbrauerei, the food was nice and the ambiance on the platz was cool. Highly recommended.

If you can't make it to Andechs itself this is the next best thing. Actually, even if you can - stop here, too!
Located only 2 blocks from Marienplatz, this hall serves the Andechs beers as well as some excellent food.
There are 3 parts to this hall. About 15 tables out front, a 10 table open air 1/2 patio, and a small entirely indoor area. In summer the outdoor area is packed. In winter, the 1/2 patio area is headed and partially enclosed.
It's Andechs...so on to the beer, right? Yes! They have the Andechs helles, doppelbock, weiss, and dunkel-weiss. Neither this hall nor the monastery had the dunkel as of May '07. There's no sign of the Apfelweiss at Am Dom, although it's a top seller at the Monstary. If you like Russ'n or Radler, they can make them with any beer you like. All beers were served in a unique .5L tall glass, rather than the typical Andechs mugs. I actually REALLY like these glasses and will have to get one sometime.
Food is "typical" Bavarian fare, but it's really good. In fact, it's possibly the best in the area. There's a 3-meat special that can't be missed. It consists of 2 sausages, a ham loaf, and unique spicy meatball. Sides were potato salad and sour kraut. Pair that with a doppelbock and you're going to be on cloud nine. They also make great flat donuts covered in buttermilk ice cream.
Admittedly the beer selection isn't as big as a few other spots, but at least 2 of their offerings are the pinnacle of their respective styles, which can make up for that!
Even though I'd always try to make it to Herrsching, this is still a must visit spot just because it's such a nice place and the food is so good.

EDIT: The food is as good as ever here, and if you can get a spot on the covered patio, it's one of my favorite spots in all of Munich. Service is pretty odd, though. Sometimes it's like the staff simply wants to help random people, regardless of any kind of signal, or when they showed up. I've had that work both for and against me. It's a little strange, but the food, beer, and atmosphere make up for it. Still, I'd say that I'd probably dock the service a bit based on my last trip.

Easy to find in the area surrounding the Cathedral, behind the church, with seating outside and in. More of a restaurant than just a beer bar, and a little more "up market" than some. Several rooms with tables and chairs on the ground floor, and upstairs. Rooms decorated with fine ceiling frescos and pictures on the walls, many with reference to the Monastry Brewery and visits by the Pope. Good food menu (and an English one available) and what we had was of a good standard, and good service too. The usual Andechs beers on tap, Hell, Dunkel, Weiss - as always good beer! Definately worth a visit, though can be very busy lunchtimes and evenings, with locals as well as the tourist crowd.

Andechser lies in the shadow of the awesome Frauenkirche (the Dom, or cathedral), in central München. Out front are 7-8 tables with umbrellas for fine-weather dining and quaffing. The inside is split into 2 parts. The main inside area has dozens of tables jammed-in together, old pictures and paintings, lots of dark wood, hop vines hanging from the ceiling, dim lighting and a loud, raucous atmosphere, even for a fairly small sized room. Adjacent to this main room is another "inside" area, though 3 big open arches let cool air filter through and keep things fresh. This area has about 10-12 tables and high benches spread along the inside wall and next to the arches. More hops adorn the area, and there was a large tv w/some sports on in the top corner of the room. There was no music playing, but the air was nonetheless filled with revelry. Service was solid, in a Munich kind of way. Biers available? I had a Doppelbock (natürlich!), and they had the Andechs Dunkel, Helles, and Hefeweizen... plus some wine, if you're into that kinda stuff.... ;-)

Great bier, and a nice place for a nightcap after quaffing at The Fest.

Stopped here to watch the Germany/Italy game of the World Cup. It's not very hard to find, and is in the heart of the tourist district of the city. A nice, fun but upscale ambiance with friendly staff and patrons. The best part? Andechs doppelbock. I kept coming back for more. That stuff is so delicious.The food is quite good as well. The sausages and mashed potatos are delicious and the menu has the rest of the standard German fare available as well. Stop in the next time you're in Munich and have a doppelbock for me.

As already stated, centrally located and yet subdued. Listening to the church bells while drinking Andechs at noon on beautifully clear sunday could be pretty high on my list of things to do. It is really more of a cafe type place than beerhall etc. but a nice change of pace. The food was well done if a bit pricey, but the beer was extremely good and they also sell gift packs of Andechs beers and glasses. Overall this was a nice place to spend a quiet lunch and still feel like you are in the heart of Munich.

I agree with everything PaulK stated, this is a much more subdued establishment and in a good way. I've been to Andechs twice and how now been here twice. Everytime I go anywhere with the name Andechs I get bad service. I don't know why, but I just do. That never deters me from going back again and again though!

It is very central and easy to get to being near Karlsplatz. On draft when I was here in August they served: Doppelbock, Hefeweizen, Dunkles, and Helles. Andechs doppelbock is a can't miss, however I find it to taste fuller at the actual monastary. All Andechs beers are fantastic nevertheless and some of the best German beer in my opinion.

Both visits here I had Weisswurst (white sausage) and it has never failed to please. Both times I received stares from across my table from hungry Bavarians. And no it wasn't because I was either 1 - eating the sausage for dinner, or, 2 - forgeting to peel the skins! This is a good place to stop by for lunch, food can get pricy though not terribly expensive.

It's also a great excuse to visit the Frauenkirche next door. Oh wait...I mean that this place is convenient to visit ALONG with your main (purposeful) trip (like a non-beer obsessed person....) to the Frauenkirche. Prosit!
