The pre-poll determined that the style built by the Averagely Perfect Project #5 will be an ESB. If you don't know what these projects are about, do a search on Averagely Perfect American IPA, Averagely Perfect American Stout, Averagely Perfect Saison, or Averagely Perfect NorthEast IPA. But basically, these projects build crowd sourced recipes among the BAs here on the Homebrewing forum. This poll (#1) will determine the ABV target. When this poll is done, I will look at the data a few different ways to determine if there is a central tendency. It may or may not be as simple as a plurality would indicate. There may or may not be a runoff(s). It all depends on the data. If you have issues with or suggestions for methodologies used in this project, please send them via beermail. Let's keep the threads themselves on topic to the question at hand and not about how you would have asked the question differently. Once ABV is determined, the following poll(s) will determine Final Gravity (FG), and thus Original Gravity (OG). This poll will be open for 48 hours. The Averagely Perfect ESB Recipe so far... Target ABV: TBD (this poll)
I'm thinking the lower end of the BJCP style spectrum would be the way to go. Leastwise if we're going for drinkability.
I looked up Fullers. 5.5% abv for cask. 5.9% bottle. Went with 5.4%. Mind you, I don't think we need to clone this beer, but the ABV feels about right to me.
I also went 5.4% because it feels right for the balanced beer I envision. To be honest though 5.2% would be just fine too. 4.6% would feel a little too much like a best bitter.
I'm all about session beer and low calorie these days. I voted for 4.6, but anywhere from 4.6 - 5.4 would be good.
I voted 4.6%... Preferring lower ABB these days. I had brewed bitter at 3.5% and it was epic! Loved it.
5.6% for me. The bitters I've had on tap across the pond were "nice", but for me not notable. Not too worried about needing more than 3 or 4 at a sitting, so this is plenty sessionable for me. And should give room to balance the malt flavors with enough hops (within the style) to leave one feeling like they've got hold of something. However, I could probably be persuaded to move up to a higher ABV.
I went with 5.6, I am brewing most things at around 5% so a little stronger seems in the works. Either way I will be happy.
I went with 4.6%. I would really like to challenge myself to brewing a tasty beer in this range. I also really enjoyed a ESB I got up in Michigan and it was right about here I believe. On the other hand, the high 5's are nice too... Oh well, can only vote once
Am I missing something? This was posted Wednesday at 6:24pm central and ended on Friday at 6:24pm central. 48 hours.
Mean: 5.3% Median: 5.2% Mode: 5.4% Interesting. The median is 5.2%, but pretty close to the hinge, within spitting distance of 5.4%. And the mean is pretty squarely between two of the polled choices. I'm tempted to call this one for 5.3%, but since that wasn't a polled choice, I think we need to a simple plurality runoff between 5.2, 5.3, and 5.4. Coming shortly.
