-> Poll #3 <- determined that Generic Two Row or Pale Ale Malt or Pilsner are IN. Flaked Oats are IN,
Carapils and/or Other Crystal Malt(s) are potentially in. Wheat Malt is potentially In. Honey Malt is potentially in.

This poll will determine the main base malt(s) (Generic Two Row, Pale Ale Malt, and/or Pilsner).

This is a straight plurality poll, unless by some miracle more than one choice gets votes from more than 50% of respondents, in which case there will be another poll to sort out whether there will be multiple malts from this list in. Otherwise, winner take all. Consider jumping ship to a similar choice if your first choice is losing. You can select more than one choice. Want something that's not listed? Write it in.

I recommend you think about this in terms of not only your personal preferences, but also in the context of the ABV and Final Gravity (and thus the attenuation) already selected, as well as any possible yeast strain selection that might be kicking around in your head.

This poll will be open for 48 hours.

If you have issues with or suggestions for methodologies used in this project, please send them via beermail. Let's keep the threads themselves on topic to the question at hand and not about how you would have asked the question differently.

(This is the fourth Averagely Perfect project. If you don't know what these are about, see the genesis of the first one here... http://www.beeradvocate.com/community/threads/the-averagely-perfect-american-ipa-project.59552/ and subsequent polls. Or do a search on Averagely Perfect American IPA, Averagely Perfect American Stout, or Averagely Perfect Saison.)

2-row or Pale Malt...unless the others are particularly common in beers of this style.

@VikeMan, please remind me. What distinguishes Pale Ale malt from the other choices? Thanks.

Maris Otter, the greatest base mate there is!

The pale ale malt vote is getting split among Maris, GP, NA Pale Ale, etc. Consequently, all pale ale malts are losing, despite pale ale malts currently having the most votes, collectively If you want to see a pale ale malt, you might consider switching votes to make sure one of them is a winner. Just observing from the grandstand. I have no horse in this race.

Pale Ale malt is kilned slightly darker than generic two row.
For example, "Rahr 2-Row Malt" is 1.7L and "Rahr Pale Ale Malt" is 3-4L.

Thanks for that clarification. Now I can back the more kilned of the two. Just tied up the race.

Pils. All the neipa beers I have done with two row miss the mark.

Agreed. I'm drinking a 40% Pils, 30% kolsch, 20% 2-row, 10% wheat (small % of honey malt) using gigayeast Vermont Ale, with cascade, montueka, and citra. I've had zero NE IPAs (technically I had 1 sample at a brew club meeting of Heady Topper last year, but I've read tasting notes on many popular examples) due to my proximity to NE. But this beer is rich malty but not heavy, peachy, cloudy, smooth, juicy, and citrusy without being orangey, and at 6%, extremely crushable. Just one data point.

I didn't vote for pils... just some NE PA malt....

but would not hate it if it gets involved.

Pils is likely making it into my next Turbid Nightmare.

Jack, the most authentic grist (read: most similar to heady and sip of sunshine) used pils as a base with a touch of caravienne and flaked oats. The finished beer had a hazy golden glow to it, while my last one that you received samples of seemed dull and lifeless in color and appearance. These beers focus so much on yeast and hops, the grain bill can easily get in the way.

I have an IPA fermenting that's pretty close to that mix... 10lbs Maris and 4 of pale. (plus a pound of Crystal 40) so the base on mine is something like 70 / 30.
Wish this poll was a month later so I could report how it comes out...

I have a suspicion some people may not be familiar with this style.

I will be the first to admit, I'm totally unfamiliar with this style. My only experience, is what I've read about it. However, I will be traveling to Boston later this week and hope to do some "research" on the style.
