So I just read on Beer Street Journal that the Avery Coconut Porter will be aged in bourbon barrels instead of rum. Although I do occasionally enjoy BBA beers I'm a little disappointed that we're gonna be missing out on what could've been an awesome rum-barrel-aged beer from Avery, who does fantastic work with their barrel-aged beers. I also think that we could use a bit variety in the barrel-aged products today.
    How bout you guys?

Rum is a really difficult barrel to work with, and even when it's done well - which is the exception - it's still not anything mind blowing.

The best use of rum barrels, is when they are part of a double barrel blend, which gives a beer more complexity.

Seems like the right move to me – when done well, bourbon barrels usually add more complexity and depth to the beer, while rum barrels tend to be more one-note in their effect.

I do have to agree that a double barrel approach could be stellar, though, particularly in this case.

Have you had Rumpkin (rum BA)? Holy booze bomb. I really like Avery's BA beers, and Mephistophelels. But Rumpkin is almost a bit too much. I like Pumpkyn (bourbon BA) better. An Avery coconut porter offering sounds pretty good though.
