Stopped into the taproom yesterday to fill a growler of IPA (can't beat $8 for 64 oz) and was surprised to see El Gose on the menu. I didn't think Avery had ever made a gose before and the bartender confirmed saying "It's sort of an experiment." Despite the lime addition, I found it to be pretty mild on the citrus/fruit flavors and has a nice amount of tartness without being Westbrook extreme (sorry, but that's not really a gose). I really like the Anderson Valley series but those are not exactly traditional either. With Sierra Nevada recently releasing a much more mild mannered gose, I wonder if we'll start to see more big brewers take a shot at the style? Hope Avery continues to play with the recipe and we see more gose in the future!
With summer coming I am sure you will see more versions of the style popping up. All I get is lactic acid and reamed corn from most examples, so I hope someone makes a good one...
How funny...I was just talking with someone the other day about how nice an influx of goses would be. Guess I'll be paying a visit to Boulder.
The Gose thing still eludes me. I like German beers, kettle sours, and salt. Yet when they form Voltron my palate just doesn't dig it.
I think Westbrook Gose is not good, but others such as the Anderson Valley Briney Melon, and Creature Comforts Athena are very nice.
Love the polarizing discussion on gose, keep it coming! For me, there are few styles of beer more refreshing on a hot summer day! I was hoping to keep this thread as a running discussion on current taproom rarities at Avery. These beers can be somewhat hit or miss (IMO) and since they're often pricey, this thread could be a good resource for someone looking at Avery's daunting taplist wondering what to try. When you're talking double digit ABVs and you've gotta drive later, you better choose wisely! Another current taproom rarity that I really love is the Daywalker- http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/30/217793/ It's been on for a while so your chance to try it might be fleeting! I think the price and the fact that it's a low ABV barrel-aged sour with fresh ginger scares people away. Don't pass this one up people! Super tart without being puckering, the perfect acidity that I like in a sour, and that ginger! If you don't like the fresh ginger that comes with sushi, you may want to pass. It's definitely not subtle. I was worried it would completely take over, but the balance between lactic acidity and the ginger plays beautifully! If anyone has tried the recent gold cap release, Expletus, think that with ginger instead of cherries and a more neutral barrel character (but anything is neutral compared to tequila am I right?) I'd love to hear some input from other BAs on Avery taproom rarities they've tried, past or present. Until next time!
...haven't seen plain old non-barreled Tweak in a while. love that beer. prefer it to the bottled ba version.
prefer a Berlinner to a gose, but with all the session IPAs available now I don't need either for a summer beer anymore
