Maybe not, but an Imperial Pint? :grinning:
Pretty sure I was served Salvator in a Becher at the Salvator Keller. Also got Maximator in a Becher at the Augustiner Keller. But a clay Krug suits me just fine too.

    Is this the one?

I didn't realize it, but I tried their Pils a while back and thought it was pretty good -- wonder why I never went back for more... are they normally pricey?

On their site, ST describes this beer has having "three types of malt ... and three types of hops."

Any insights from those of you who have tried it as to what malts (well, besides pilsner and, I assume, Munich) and what hops were used?

    Yep, that's the one.

I also remember hearing good things about their pils but never gave it a whirl. I'd never suspect them to be great at those styles because when I think of Southern Tier, I think of Pumking, Choklat, Creme Brulee...etc.

I picked up mostly pilsner, can't say what the third would be. My guess is American two-row simply because that's what American breweries do? For example, Sierra Nevada.

Southern Tier Where The Helles Summer? is Pilsner Malt dominant.

    Cheers!

Probably exactly why I never give them a second look! That, and their "creative" naming. Where the Helles Summer? :astonished: Probably used that because Leinenkugel already procured Helles Yeah!

Any insights into what the other two malts -- and three hops varieties -- might be?

Are you talking about the Eurotrash Pils? I thought that one was pretty good. ST around these parts run around $8.99 a sixer of 12 oz bottles, so right in line with most craft in it's ilk.

Just a guess here, but maybe November 15th of 2013?

    No, Eurotrash Pilz.
I had noted in my review that the sixer was on sale for $7, so I thought it may have been marked way down. If they're right in that $9 range around here I'll give the Helles a try.

Ah, I see where you're going there. As good a guess as any. I suppose I could email them to find out. If it was, indeed, Nov of 13, that might explain some of the less-than-ideal richness/flavor.

“That pretty much confirms that Andechs uses the day/year (dddy) variant of the Julian dating system.”

Yup, I got confused on which 2013 beer was being discussed.

    Cheers!

P.S. It is a damn shame that since today is 3/4/15 that we are discussing beers with 2013 bottle dates.:slight_frown:

Shame indeed, though such are the challenges when trying to find fresh imports. And, to be fair, I can do the same thing with American craft stuff -- when I see 3-4 month old IPAs on a shelf, I tend to pass right by them. Too many other quality, fresh offerings to mess around with older stock.

With some of the import stuff, though, you really don't have another option -- if you want to know what Andechs Doppelbock tastes like (or love the stuff and want it in your fridge period), you just have to be willing to go with it (or be willing to wait many months, if not, gulp, longer, for a new shipment).

Honestly, it works the same the other way around. Would a fresh SNPA (possibly even on tap) be nice? Probably. Is it likely to be available here? Probably not. And while there are good German Pale Ales and IPAs I don't think I've had one that was as good as my U.S. favorites.

The one advantage of SNPA is that it is bottle conditioned and the aspect of bottle conditioning resists staling.

    Cheers!

P.S. Sierra Nevada also uses special crown liners that resist air (oxygen) permeation which increases the beer's shelf life.

Huh, I didn't even know bottle conditioned PAs/IPAs existed. I thought this technique was majorily used for wheat beers (including Bocks) and various Belgians.
