Anybody know more about this beer? My brother got me a bottle of the 2013 vintage for Christmas, and I just noticed the BBA version isn't listed on BA, and the regular Old Scrooge is listed twice: once at Silver City's current production brewery & taproom in Bremerton, and once at the original brewpub in Silverdale, which became strictly a restaurant after brewing was shifted to their Bremerton location in 2010 (per their website). The one found under the old location is listed as an Old Ale at 9%, and the one listed under the Bremerton location is listed as a barleywine at 8.5%. My bottle definitely says brewed in Bremerton, that it was aged in bourbon barrels and that it is 9% abv. The Silver City website makes no mention of a BBA version. I'm planning on drinking this after the Seahawk game, and would appreciate any info re: this beer.
Not a ton of info, but this article has a little bit at the bottom of the page. Also, their website calls it a british style barleywine, but I've always thought of it as an old ale, which is what it won a medal for at GABF. Not sure I know what the difference would be for those two styles though. http://www.washingtonbeerblog.com/old-scrooge-flying-off-shelf-year/ Edit: here's the profile page for this beer: http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/959/89101/
Thanks for the info. It seems that while they call it a barleywine on their website, in their press release they call it an Old Ale. I've always thought the styles overlap, anyway, but it's funny that they don't seem to have made up their minds.
I know a guy with the brewery, but he's got Seacow tickets. I'll shoot him a message, prolly won't get a reply before ya drink the beer though.
Thanks, but no heroic measures are neccessary. I was just curious about it. I think I got enough info from the link @beefandbean22 sent to post it on BA, and if anyone at SC objects to the style it's listed under they can get it changed.
It tasted like an English barleywine to me, I liked it. To further the confusion, the bottle states 2013, but it just came on the market in my area. Presumably aged (in barrel or bottle?) for a year or more before coming to market in bottles.
According to their press release, it was brewed in 2013, then aged for a year in bourbon barrels from Heaven Hill, a distillery I'm not familiar with (Seattle area?).
The Heaven Hill I know is in Kentucky, but it encompasses a bunch of different brands: http://heavenhill.com/brands
Let's me further confuse you. The link provided above was my original add and it was the 2011 version which saw limited bottle and draft release. I picked up 2011 BA Old Scrooge bottles and drank it draft from the Bremerton location in early 2013.
More than anything else, it actually reminded me of a Belgian Quad without a Belgian yeast. Very sweet for a barleywine/old ale, but too complex for the sweetness to be cloying and one dimensional.
