    greetings all,

My wife and I are headed to Sao Miguel for a week next month and I was just wondering if anyone had any recommendations. I gather that there's not much of a beer scene there, but it never hurts to ask.

I did see that the local brewery (Melo Abreu) makes a Schwarzbier that sounds like a nice complement to the usual macro lagers. I'm looking forward to trying the brined lupino beans which are apparently commonly paired with beer there.

Is it worth visiting the Melo Abreu brewery? I read that it doesn't look that great on the outside but has a decent tap room.

Thanks much! And to the extent the moderators will allow it, I'm happy to hear non-beer suggestions too

Vacationed in Madeira and they had Coral, which was decent when drunk ice cold. Also had some British-themed places due to the long-term influence of UK cruise ships. Maybe Azores has something cool.

I was in Sao Miguel in 2010 so I'm sure the beer scene may have changed since then but it was all American Adjunct Lagers when I was there. That said, enjoy it for what it is. There are numerous outside cafe's in Ponta Delgada on the waterfront where you can grab a cheap lager and sit outside. Even with the beer scene being lacking, Sao Miguel was one of my favorite and most memorable trips. The island is absolutely beautiful and there is so much to do. PM me if you'd like some suggestions for things to do.

Headed there in a month. I know it was a while ago, but anything worthwhile you found? Thanks!

    hey there!

oh man i'm so jealous. We wanted to drop everything and move there when we got back. I did a New Beer Sunday post that I think covered all the beer bases shortly after our trip:

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/community/threads/new-beer-sunday-week-688.570589/page-3#post-5996654

Their everyday lager (Especial I think?) was surprisingly tasty too.

That post covers pretty much all my beer info, but I can't resist offering the following on food too:

http://restaurantepontadogarajau.com/ : fantastic food in a cool, if low key, setting. Get the cockles. Not too far from Furnas.

https://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaur...iews-Bar_Caloura-Lagoa_Sao_Miguel_Azores.html : equally fantastic food with a seaside view and more of a coastal vibe.

https://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaur...sa_do_Abel-Agua_de_Pau_Sao_Miguel_Azores.html : if you want steak it's either here or the Association mentioned in my new beer sunday thread. The association is delicious but much more of a sterile, industrial environment. We prefered the more funky and rustic vibe of Caso do Abel.

Have a blast! It really is something of a magical place.

ETA: I thought I had mentioned the bar in the NBS post, but the picture of the Bohemia beer was taken at the Tuka Tula bar on the north side of the island. It's an absolutely gorgeous and interesting seaside spot and they have more or less all the beers I list in that post. They have live music on the weekends as well but we didn't manage to make it up there for that. Definitely one of the "hipper" and young spots on the island.
