I'm heading on a short vacation to Ocean City, Maryland soon. Are there are really good craft breweries or places to pick up some very good beers?
and, coincidentally, the town that burly oak is located in, berlin, maryalnd, was just named americas best small town by a travel publication (i forget which one). also, dogfish is maybe 45 minutes north in rehoboth beach, de. and, i believe evolution is located about 30 minutes west in salisbury, but not all all certain. have fun. oh, and i was in oc in march, and there was a brewpub and restaurant opening there in may, can always check that spot out, although i do not know the name.
Thank you very much for the information. I definitely need to check out Dogfish Head. I've had their 60, 90, and American Beauty. I'd like to get my hands on the 180 and see if they have any highly touted stouts or porters.
Without a doubt, hit up Burley Oak. You can also drive another 15 minutes from there down 50W to Tall Tales. Their beer no where near as good as Burley Oak but they're another brewery if you're interested. Further down from Tall Tales is Evolution which I would suggest, too. In Ocean City, you can hit up 45th Street Taphouse which has a pretty decent selection of craft beers, not to mention you can do it all while eating right on the water. Up on 93rd Street you can hit up Liquid Assets for bottles. They have a pretty decent selection for the area, too. If you get up to Rehoboth Beach, hit up Dogfish Head and Henlopen City Oyster House. Dogfish will have some brewpub exclusives and Henlopen always has a solid draft list. You may get lucky and find some Cantillon bottles for sale on-site there too (ask the bartender as they generally aren't advertised). Enjoy your trip!
I keep hearing good things about Burly Oak so I'm going to try for that. DFH is a must, too. The 45th Street Taphouse sounds like an awesome place to go. Does anyone know of a craft beer bar that's located on the boardwalk? I've heard there was one, but not sure I've ever seen it before. Maybe it's off the boardwalk but on lower number streets still?
Burley Oak is the place to go. They still have bottles from their release in march and they are top notch. They don't have food but to can stop on the way and bring your own. I'd suggest belly busters or maybe primo's or there are some small places in Berlin that have good food as well. The guys at Burley can help you out with that. Buy a glass while you're there!
There is actually a brewpub there. It used to be called Shorebilly Brewing Co. but now it is called Backshore Brewing Co.
I was there during the day last September (it was still Shorebilly then) and it was dead empty. And, just my opinion, the beers weren't anything special from what I remember. Perhaps they've changed!
Backshore was only fair last year when I was there. Tall Tales and De Lazy Lizard more of the same. Go with Burley Oak, DFH and EVO if you can get to Salisbury. OC Brewing hopes to open this week but will not have any of their beers on tap as they only began brewing last week. They are to have around 14 guest taps going until they can supply their own.
Burley Oak IMO is the best brewery in MD, hands down. Just bring some food with you when you go cause you won't want to leave they don't serve food.
These are my thoughts exactly. Go with Burley Oak, eVo and DFH but if you are on the board walk check out Backshore (was only there when it was Shorebilly) and lazy lizard, but don't go out of your way for those like Burley Oak, eVo and DFH.
I went to Salisbury University, which is about 30min from OC. I would highly recommend Specific Gravity in Salisbury. Not only do they serve craft beer, but they have amazing pizza and a bottle shop
