I just read this article in a water industry magazine (Journal - American Water Works Association) and thought it was interesting. It reminds us how important water is to us and how important it is to making beer. I feel very fortunate to live in the State of Michigan surrounded by fresh water and fresh beer! Follow the link if you are interested. Link. Sorry I couldn't figure how to post article here. I hope the link works.

There's only a finite amount of water on the earth, so all water has been recycled repeatedly.

I suppose this is tangentially related absolutely crazy idea. What would happen if you made beer with salt water? Here's my idea, use salt water instead of regular water and during the boil, boil and collect the vapor as the wort. Pitch with yeast and see what happens?

Will the boil only leave you with purified water collected, or would you be able to keep enough of the malt and such to actually make a beer?

You do realize that almost all beer is at least 4% alcohol, if not 2x or 3x that much....

Have been for years! Southern California water = farm runoff, and treated water pumped into Colorado River, Ca. Aquaduct, and the All American Canal. Can't complain about the final outcome of (a large percentage of) CA beer products. Cheers!

It can take up to 8 gallons or more of water to make one gallon of beer. Reducing the amount of water used to make beer can have a bigger impact that using recycled water in beer. Full Sail Brewery has gotten their water use down to 2.5 gallons per gallon of beer, New Belgium is down to about 3.5 gallons per gallon of beer, Victory is down to 4.93. A&B is shooting for something in the 3 to 3.5 range.

In Minneapolis we get our water from the Mississippi River. Several towns upstream discharge their waste water to the river so we are already drinking beer and water that has been recycled.

The link didn't take me to the article but I must know, did the article teach you how to determine whether the beer you drink is brewed with recycled water or is this a talent you had before you read the article? Sorry for the 'tude but I can't fathom how someone would make such a determination. And seeing that bottles and cans are not [yet] marked with 'made with recycled water' warnings, this seems like a moot point. But if there is something, anything, that makes it 100% certain that a beer is made with recycled water, please let us know.

Just had this beer in Spain. Brewed with Mediterraenean sea water. It was honestly really bad, but don't think due to the sea water. Also don't know the details of the brewing process, but thought I'd show you one that is actually brewed with sea water. I was extremely intrigued when I saw it on the shelf

Edit: or you could get 3 Utopias and a few Rare's for the same price. If you're into that stuff..

If you looked at a satellite map, you would probably see a water treatment plant near some of your favorite breweries in large cities. That being said, many breweries filter and tweak the water by adding calcium chloride, etc. to get the ph right. So as far as recycled water is concerned, I am not. I trust the breweries are on top of things. If they weren't we would know about it.
