Maybe it's been awhile since I've had either but SN hoptimum came to mind.

Yeah to both. My first Hopslam was before I knew it was brewed with honey and I thought it was honey-like then and so wasn't surprised when I found that it actually was brewed with honey. My guess is that the combination of the honey "impurities" combined with the malt sweetness give me a honey flavor.

I think part of the difference in recognizing the taste arises from the fact that there was a 4-5 year period back before I discovered flavorful beer where I was focused on learning/experiencing the flavor differences that come from different honeys (e.g., Sourwood Honey can be noticeably different from Clover Honey, especially in a side-by-side).

Transient Artisan Ales the jui is loose is close. Pipeworks Sure Bet is close also. I buy Hopslam ou of loyalty to my first lo, and then I open one and taste it and remember what a great beer this is. If you buy it at the intended price it's a bargain compared to similar IPAs in bombers

Odell Myrcenary for the win! 14.99 in 6 pack cans, year round, goes down smoother than a lot of IPA's.

I agree with the Jai Alai comparison, although, I actually like Jai Alai better, for the exact descriptors you listed.

Here in Wisconsin, we get 3 Sheeps' (Sheboygan) First Kiss. It also is an Imperial IPA brewed with honey. Not quite Hopslam-my, but very piney/malty, but without the booziness. It is available year-round and also doesn't cost $18 a sixer.

Waldo comes to mind but I'll take some Hopslam over Waldo any day.

It's all good. One thing about a beer website is that its inhabitants may be partaking, which can both create and solve problems in a short amount of time.

I'm a big Bell's and Founders fan, too. I was probably a little more aggressive than I could have been partly due to a perceived slight on one of my old favorites. Glad I had that mistaken. It's always fine with me if folks don't like what I like, but I do get tired of the attitude a lot of the newer members have toward some of the pioneers. I should probably just shut up and yell at the squirrels to get off my lawn.

Double Ringer was my favorite beer of 2016. It was amazing on tap at the source, while I was back home for a visit over the summer. I didn't catch any similarities between it and hopslsm though. It seemed to me like an IIPA that Toppling Goliath would brew. Wasn't it single hopped using equinox, though? I thought I remember them saying that. Regardless, I really hope they brew it again this year. There are still sixers of it on the shelf here in NW WI, but it is a shell of its former self. Upper Hand actually just started distributing to MN, too.

It's been a long time since my first Hopslam, and I'd say it started me down the road to beer depravity. It was that good, best nose ever on a Dipa, it was bright , clean refreshing. Something similar today would be last year version of Abrasive. Sorry I only had 8 two month old brews this year to compare. But to Hopslam, somehow it's a bit sweet, at times a bit dank, the taste surely doesn't follow the nose, or perhaps it does so now. My palates changed over the years but it hasn't changed enough to think it's off that much I couldn't notice a dramatic change.

I view Hopslam as one of those beers that every year i will buy just one 6 pack. Not my favorite or a must have but always buy one. Doesnt rate as one i would stock up on such as a Surly Abrasive for example.

Not for $20, it's limited yes, but I'm not seeing mind blowing reaction to this years beer. I'll try on on tap which I probably won't see. I'd like to buy on the hope it was its former stellar self, but the reactions won't drive me.

Balling The Queen is the closest I've tasted to Hopslam. Not quite the same mouthfeel, but the taste is on par. Good to see Topling Goliath mentioned here, as King Sue and Sosus are as good as Hopslam, but very different. Each are among my favorite IPAs.

The only beer I've came across that is pretty close to Hopslam is called Hoppy Time from a little hole in the wall brewery called Zumbier. Not a fan of the rest of their line up except this one.

A buddy of mine just got a bunch of fresh Abrasive mailed to him from family in Minneapolis. He's going to share a couple with me on Thursday. I'm looking forward to it.

Fresh Abrasive is amazing, the canning dates on the bottom. If it's fresh prepare to be blown away, I bought on line and got stuck with 2 month old stuff. Enjoy.

Yes nothing like fresh Abrasive. Unfortunately everything i have seen in south suburbs of chicago is can dated 11-15-16. Cant pay 17.99 for that. Fortunately Pipeworks ninja-unicorn is somewhat similar, always fresh here and 10.99 for 4.
