Was it the original spiced/chili - Mexican/chocolate stout?

Some debate going on with a friend of mine.

I had it before it was bottled on tap at an event in NYC. I had never had anything like it, that's for sure. Would be interesting to hear if Hunahpu's is where it started, or if not where did it start?

As far as I can see Hunapu landed 2010 followed by copper creek in 2011, I can't find any earlier version although I'm sure it's possible one exists.

Only had it once and I shared that bottle with friends at a beer release. My memory is heavy cinnamon above all else, but very flavorful. I haven’t had Mexican Cake in years, but I love the fresh habanero hit.

Was thinking possibly Abraxas was older but that was added the the BA website in 2011 so no that was a year later.

Theobroma from Dogfish head has chilis and chocolate and was added to BA in 2008, but its not a stout.

Hunahpu I had back in the summer of 2011, and at that time I didn't know of another chili stout.

Still kicking myself for not grabbing a growler of Hunahpu when I had the chance back in 2010 at a Philly bottle shop because I thought $45 was too much.

When did bomb come out? I always just assumed it was the innovator of the style but I have no grounds to actually base that off of.

I could be wrong here, but in 2015 I had a vertical of year 1-3 of Bomb! at Tapwerks. There was not a 4th year release at that point (Prairie had different colored wax seals for each year). BA shows it added to the database in 2013, so I think I'm correct.

Don't sleep on New Mexico (or even Southern Colorado/Arizona) as a possibility. . .

I remember having all kinds of one off stuff like this from Marble, Three Rivers, Santa Fe, Le Cumbre etc. . . I mean, you trip and fall in any direction in New Mexico and its green chile, mexican chocolate and roasted malt it seems.

The first of this ilk that I recall was Cocoa Mole from New Belgium. Looks like it was 2012. Perhaps the first "west coast" version? We didn't have access to Hunapu (still don't through normal means).

I believe so. It was the most I ever paid for a beer in my life. At the time CC was not sold in NY and a store who selling it for 45 dollars. I bit. It was amazing. Never had it again

Similar story as me. I bought a bottle in NY on the secondary market for $30 from a guy who worked for the store by me. Only time I had it and I like the beer, but those I shared it with felt the acidity of the chilies gave them heartburn.

Perhaps they took inspiration from Dark Lord? Similar qualities minus the pepper...
