Bock season is one of my favorite times of the year but it seems to be diminishing each year to the point they are almost getting hard to find.

I thought a thread listing what is available in this state regarding bocks, doppelbocks, maibocks, etc would be helpful. The only one I know of for sure is Schell Bock which is a great one. I am not sure if other mainstays like Schell Maifest and Summit Maibock are coming out this year or what else might be coming or available.

Hopefully some other places will be putting out beers in this style this spring.

Schell's Stag Series Black Bock is in their Brewer's Stash variety box.

I really hope the Summit Maibock will be back. I thought it was great last year.

    Nice thread idea-
Bauhaus Bleat boxer Bock has been out for a bit and it is quite good. And yes, Summit- Maibock in cans! That was a nice early COVID surprise last year, I bought my fair share!

Bauhaus has a bock in a recent mix pack (along with a hazy IPA, an oatmeal stout and a solid Pils brewed with Kveik yeast). I though it was good.

Utepils is releasing their dopplebock this weekend at the taproom

Fulton had (maybe still has?) a Maibock in its sampler pack:

Not one that I was overly fond of, but if it’s out there, the more the merrier for the stylistic interpretations, as far as I am concerned.

I went Utepils today and tried the Doublebock. I didn't stick around for the poking but should have this would be a good poking beer. Thanks to HawkEye19 informing us on this beer.

I also went to Northbound today and had a pour of "Helles Frozen Over" Eisbock at 16.3% ABV made from Wampa. It sure tasted good at first, but later I didn't taste much.

I really wish more brewers (local and national) would produce doppelbocks in cans/bottle for distribution.

I love Ayinger Celebrator but don't see it often. Bent Paddle made a good doppelbock a few years ago but it was only distributed once.

I think there are a couple reasons why they have diminished.

    1) It takes skill to brew bocks. Brewing lagers is also more time consuming and space consuming for brewers. There are several that have the capability to do this and have successfully in the past but don't now. Which leads me to......

    2) A lot of places are brewing what is popular so that means a bigger emphasis on sours, pastry stouts, and hazy IPA's. Can't blame them for wanting to make money in their business I guess. But expanding on those beers likely means less opportunity to do beers like bocks.

At least that's how I see it...Thankfully there are still some that produce this style in the state.

When it comes to brewing in the Craft Beer sense of the industry, time and space = money, and more specifically money LOST or “left on the table” as it were.

Why lager -anything- for six weeks or more, when you can turn tanks over in a little more than just two weeks?

And yes, ale brewing has the edge not just in terms of quickness to-market (thus being a potentially more profitable business model, generally speaking), but also in that the Craft hobby (and segment of the industry) has always looked to variations of ale styles for innovation and “what’s new, what’s hot?*”, rather than looking to lagers for such.

There’s even a long-running thread, here at B.A., which puts a fine line on all of this:

“What’s the last lager you had that impressed the hell out of you?”

It’s too bad that lager styles are still seen as “boring”, but it’s unlikely to ever change.

*A sales rep from Mark VII would hit me with that phrase whenever he came in to hype new additions to their portfolio.

What’s new and hot — both then and now — is very, very rarely a lager of any style.

Schell's is coming out with a maibock that is part of the latest Peacock Pack. It doesn't appear to be the same as Maifest, but of course someone from Schell's would have to confirm (or deny) that assumption.

Sweet looks like a decent enough peacock batch where one could buy two and enjoy them all and come away with a sixer of the maibock to boot.

It was in the pack last year (or was it 2019?), too. I really enjoyed it. A different recipe from their original Maifest, or so I was told.

The database says it was indeed last year--a Stag Series offering.

I really wish Schell's would sell their special one-off offerings like their Stag Series and limited beers separately as 4/6 packs like they used to.

I see that Waldmann is releasing a doppelbock, and are having what they're calling a bierstahlen festival featuring the poking of their bock with hot iron pokers.

That Schell's Maibock is damn good.

I'm not familiar enough with the style to really judge it. But I thoroughly enjoyed it.
