Thanks for elaborating. I personally, had no issue with Regal. I actually enjoyed it, a lot. Yours is the first bad review I have heard. It is unfortunate that that is the experience you have had with it. I do believe that is the experience you had, but I think that is more of an isolated incident. So I still stand by, they do their best at putting out quality they can stand behind (again, minus the 2015 problem).

I've mentioned this before, but for 3 straight FOBABs I've poured Prop 14 out because all I could taste was cinnamon. Just awful . . .

I'm probably going to get people into a tizzy about this, but...

Am I the only one shocked that BCBS has never had a variant involving Apple Brandy?

This just sort of came to me. Struck me as surprising. -No small batch Clybourn stuff even from everything I could find.

I had Regal at an all BCBS bottle share with friends back in June-ish '16. It really impressed me and I detected no signs of anything off. Had another just a few weeks ago back in Oct. Everyone felt like this beer was not aging well and past it's prime. No signs of infection or anything like that though. The general consensus was that Regal should be drank sooner than later if you're holding one.

We also had a Prop '14 at that same share a few weeks back. Most of us noted some mild coconut with a hint of cinnamon (cassia bark...whatever). Definitely not a bomb in either direction. Excellent beer. I was excited to finally try it. Now the Big Bad Baptista we had shortly after, total cinnamon bomb. Still well liked by all. So much that some people mistook it as having peppers in it at first.

They have had Apple Brandy Barrel Aged BCBS.....It was at the last or 2nd to last Fobab at Bridgeview Arts Center where they gave you a flight of BCBS aged in different barrels so you could see how barrel flavors work. Was quite delicious. One of the samples was Baudonia so place that around 2012?

    Wow. I totally missed that.

I would love to do a flight of different barrels with BCBS. That sounds fantastic.

Who needs Prop '14 when you have a french press? :-)

I'm getting close to experimenting with one - will start by adding coconut to a beer. The Binny's blog this week has a short podcast about it and used Dragon's Milk as the base. That's a much cheaper way to practice, and a great idea on where to start...

    That is a great idea.

Someone recently gave me a recipe for making a vanilla version or prop14 that seemed super easy (no press required), but I love BCbS so much, and I have such a small ammount that I am scared to try it. Trying it with a much cheaper BA stout is a good idea.

Link by chance to the podcast?

It's totally acceptable that this beer wasn't for you. You could even say that this beer
Don't worry about ruining the bcbs. I've done a lot of infusions now, and the only time I ruined one was when I was recapping the bottle and broke the neck right off. Bcbs infused with glass chips anyone?

Toasted coconut, vanilla bean, coffee, raspberry, blackberry, and various combos of the above all turn out great.

    Here is the link.

Agree that I'd be hesitant to use up a BCBS unless I felt confident! On the podcast, they didn't talk much (after the first one) on the specifics of 'how much of the ingredients' to add or 'how long to let it sit'...so I guess that's where the experimentation comes.

Maybe we need to start a adjunct making thread - sort of a like a home brewing 'lite'

Did you use whole vanilla beans or how did you handle vanilla? I'm more curious on where to get the raw ingredients to add (in what form).

Sorry - might be getting OT here. If needed, we can move this convo...

The whole vanilla beans are going to be more expensive than a bottle of BCBS, be prepared...

Two Whole Organic quality vanilla beans are more than $5, if memory serves. Like $10 if memory serves. That was in a small pack, not a normal sized bottle, I think.

(The $vanilla/$bcbs ratio is probably small, but to get the vanilla beans, the initial cost may be high. I think that's what House was trying to say.)

Pro tip....go to your neighborhood Jewel in the bulk food/spice section. They have a self serve jar of Madagascar Vanilla Beans. They end up costing about $1 - $1.50 per pod, way cheaper than anything I've seen anywhere.
