I tend to be rather dismissive of Brew Dogs, mainly because the beers they brew on the show are so contrived (i.e. "We're in city X, so we want to brew the Xest beer ever. So it will have all these crazy in ingredients and be brewed in a similarly crazy manner...") If that approach was counterbalanced by more focus on the craft of brewing and the local scene, it'd be a better show.

That said, I must say that last night's Vegas episode was one of the most entertaining episodes yet. I'm not certain that it advanced the cause of craft beer any, but it was a lot of fun. It also confirmed that Vegas does, in fact, have a burgeoning craft beer scene. I've been twice in the last few years and couldn't much. Now, I know where to look.

The beer may have been contrived in terms of expensive ingredients for the sake of being expensive. But I was intrigued by the idea of a "golden stout." I wish they spent more time explaining the concept behind a golden stout. Can anyone provide more information? I thought the roasted malts, which account for the color, are the basis of a stout. No roasting, no stout, right? But they weren't so clear about this. How do pale malts make for a stout? I also noted a lot of oats in the bill. Does anyone have more information?

I checked around for other golden stouts, and came on a site for BrewDog/Stone Luciferin. Couldn't find it listed on BA, but perhaps someone can find it. Here's the site:

If you click on the release date, which according to the site was "April 1" 2010, you will realize that it is one of their many Aprils fool joke.

I noted the date, but considering that they actually did brew a "golden stout" on the episode, I had to wonder if this might have been for real.

So, what was originally a joke actually became a real beer, then? Hmm...

Brewdog did do one a while back ago actually as part of their Abstrakt series. It was AB:08. I never did try it but it was pretty received.

And I'll bet the coffee was cleaned first. Thank goodness James and Martin didn't dump the Kopi Luwak in without washing it first.

That one may have been a joke, but Stone actually does brew a "Golden Stout." As a matter of fact, they have one on tap right now at their Liberty Station location. Just click the link to view their draft list and then scroll down to this:
Stone Liberty Station Master Of Disguise
    8.7% ABV Golden Stout
Currently one review of it on here: http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/147/126666/

Also, Pipeworks brews a "white stout" called Hey, Careful Man, There's a Beverage Here: http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/28178/103931/

    Definitely an entertaining episode.

5 Stones makes a pale stout called Camo. I've never had it, so I can't speak on it.

I know it's kinda dumb, but I always watch it anyway. However, I thought this episode was particularly dumb and had even less to do with actual good beer than any other.

Had a lot of hot chicks and sex jokes though, so whatevs

    It's a fabulously entertaining show
Better than any other reality piece of crap
James and Martin really do care about craft beer guys I met them at the agm last month and they are genuinely passionate a friendly
Brewdog has recently started investing in smaller new craft breweries over here to help them out
One of the success stories is brew by numbers which is a fab brewery

My favorite part of the show is usually the beer-food pairings.

How is it that this show can be really good and really shitty at the same time? Enough about your nipples buddy, ok?
Enough about brewing in unique situations or locations No brewers in the world want to make brewing any more difficult than it needs to be.
Its a great show about beer, but the jokes are becoming more and more sophmoric and expected. I enjoy the information they provide, but find it very odd that james or martin will tell the brewer what they are doing, as if he is the one who doesn't know the procedure.

Id imagine they are saying that not to teach the brewers how to brew but to inform the veiewers (I'd bet many don't know) on how the brewing process goes.

It might be a a cheesy show sometimes, but I too enjoyed the Vegas episode. In years passed I considered Vegas to be a craft wasteland (granted my focus in Vegas is not beer), but I'm excited to check out a few of the places mentioned on my next visit.

My chief complaint about the show is their focus on sometimes rare/limited production beers. One of the main goals of the show is to introduce and educate new people about craft beer. But when they feature a beer like Zombie Dust or some barrel aged variant a regular joe schmoe isn't likely going to be able to stroll in a grab it off the shelf. This isn't the case for every beer they feature, but it still annoys me none the less.

I get that, but when doing it, they can talk to the camera, like they do with other aspects of the show. I just find it odd, thats all.
