I prefer my "American" browns to be toasty (I think that's what people refer to as nutty?), not cloyingly sweet (a light, lingering sweetness is nice, though), and with the bitterness to be relatively light. That's exactly what I think of Ellie's, and that's why it's one of my favorites.

I'm currently enjoying a nice, big mug of Saugatuck Bonfire Brown for the first time right now, and I have to say it's right up that alley. You should keep your eye out for it, my man.

This is by far my favorite style. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy my IPA's but they are so damned time sensitive. Too far past the bottling date and you've got a big ol' bottle of "meh"..But browns, Those you can take your time to enjoy. My list toppers are Dogfish Head Palo Santo and Indian Brown, Smutty Nose Old Brown Dog and the Really Old Brown Dog, Moose Drool when I can get it and Cigar City Maduro.

I know everyone hates Rogue (me included, sometimes) but I really love their Hazelnut Brown Nectar ... Also concur with Moose Drool and Avery Ellie's Brown Ale

New Glarus Fat Squirrel is one of my favorites and it's impossible to go wrong with Samuel Smith. Two brown ales I had recently for the first time were Starr Hill's Maple Brown Ale, which was absolutely delicious - hard to believe they didn't add maple to the beer - and Bell's Best Brown. I'll definitely be having the Bell's again. For reasons I won't get into, I drank it out of a coffee mug, which, by the way, I made sure was perfectly clean before pouring the beer. Surprisingly, it actually wasn't a bad way to drink the beer. It maintained a decent head and was nice and creamy. Plus, it made the last 45 minutes of work much more fun...oh wait, I said I wasn't going to get into that...

I hate Rogues price point, and some of their stupid beers (voodoo), but the beers that they have made for a really long time are pretty good (dead guy, Shakespeare stout etc).

I'll look for it! I'm glad you pointed it out, to be honest its label is less-than-attention-seizing, probably one I would pass right on by.

Locally... Pig's Ear Brown Ale (Woodstock Inn) and A.Dog (14th Star) are solid brown ales. I've heard really good things about Paradigm by Kelsen as well.

Around Missouri Logboat Brewing has their Mamoot English mild in cans. Mmmmm, Mamoot.

A lot of Saugatuck's stuff is for me, but I'm glad I pulled the trigger on this one.

You'll have to get to MI to get it but Blackrocks Coconut Brown is really good.

    Moose Drool? Seriously?

When I'm king, I am so totally going to put myself in charge of naming beers. I'm thinking a code, which incorporates beer style, brewery i.d., sequence and state of origin on a simple, tasteful black and white label.

A few of my favorite browns are the Third Street Lost Trout Brown Ale(MN), Brau Brothers Ringneck(also MN), and Empyrean Third Stone Brown Ale(NE). Definitely worth a try if you can find them.

Totally agree with your post. I have always been a brown ale and porter fan. I am now venturing into the IPA world.

In my area, we have a number of craft breweries that produce great brown ales. However, I have to say that Cigar City has the best. Whenever my wife and I are in Florida we always split a pitcher of their brown ale. I need to convince her we need to visit relatives there soon (of course access to Cigar City beer does not play into this suggestion).

Lagunitas Brown Shugga. I've always thought that a nice brown ale would have a little bit of sweetness to it and Lagunitas went over the t Brown Shugga.

Despite the name, Brown Shugga is NOT a brown ale.
    Prosit!

If you trade, get some cigar city maduro. It almost doesn't make sense to me that a brown ale can be that good.
