I generally like my beer to be taste like beer, and not cocktails. I might drink 4 mixed drinks a year. However, the idea of beer designed to imitate or be a riff on a cocktail/mixed drink style interests me. I have an Aardwolf White Russian that I intend to taste against a Pipeworks Hey,There's a Beer in Here. I'm tempted to try the Brooklyn Improved Old Fashioned, but I think Brooklyn has been a bit overpriced.

For those that don't think a cocktail based beer isn't apostasy, what are some better cocktail inspired beers.

Town Hall has a BA brew called Manhattan Reserve its a Belgian Strong Ale , but has the taste of the cocktail.

The Bruery has done a few in the past. I think the best one was the Jester King collaboration beer, Imperial Cabinet. It was a Ramos Gin Fizz and turned out phenomenal.

We actually covered this trend in the February issue of the mag. Brooklyn has a new rye-based beer called Improved Old Fashioned and Perennial created the Jack Rose cider-beer hybrid based on a cocktail at DC's Jack Rose Dining Saloon.

That brooklyn was very solid actually. A little over spiced but other than that it was spot on

I have to second Imperial Cabinet from The Bruery. I thought they did an excellent job emulating the original cocktail down to the frothy egg white like flavor and mouthfeel.

Insula Multos Collibus by Avery Brewing. I've read online it's supposed to resemble an old fashioned (which I've never had). I thought it tasted like a whiskey sour.

I've used the DFH Randall Jr. to emulate and Old Fashioned. Used 120 Minute IPA as the base, poured it into the randall. Then added some bourbon soaked cherries and some orange peel. Let it sit for about 20 minutes. Delicious!

Short's brews this one, and I think it took the gold medal in the Experimental category at the GABF this past year. http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/9629/208789/
I think they are going to bottle it this year, but I don't know if it will see distro or be pub-only.

A few years ago Hill Farmstead and Siren Brewing collaborated to make a lemoncello IPA, inspired by the Italian liquor, limoncello. I think the "IPA" label threw many people off, because there's hardly anything IPA-like about it, but as a beer version of limoncello it was amazingly spot-on. I think The Bros' review summed it up best: http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/31221/134794/?ba=bros

I enjoyed Geriatric Hipster Club from The Bruery, which was inspired by the Old Fashioned cocktail.

I did not enjoy their margarita-inspired Roble Blanco, but that was mostly because I don't like tequila.

It was bottled at the end of last year. Brewery only on December 23rd last year.

Well you made me do some research (although it wasn't difficult). :stuck_out_tongue: It's in this link in the Specialty Beer release section for April, although it doesn't look like it is the gin-barrel version which is probably the one that you mention. https://www.shortsbrewing.com/2016-bottle-release-schedule/
