I live in RI (near Providence) and recently made a few business trips through CT and really liked a number of beers I've grabbed (SeaHag, etc.). Unfortunately, most the good stores I've come across are 2+ hours from my home, does anyone know of any 1/2 way decent shops in eastern CT that may be less than an hour drive?
This: http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/24148/?view=ratings New York Pizza is down the road and has great pizza and an awesome taplist.
Grand Wine & Spirit Shop in Groton has a pretty decent selections including lots of CT beer (stuff from NEBCO, Shebeen, Two Roads). There actually two locations but I prefer the one near a Big Y. Definitely worth stopping in if you are passing through.
If you're looking for something close with a good selection then head to Brooklyn, CT. There are two shops within 2 minutes of eachother, B's Discount Liquors and North East Wine. B's has a big mix a six wall if you want to sample several different beers, and North East usually has some rare gems. It should only be about 45 minutes from you, and an easy drive right across Rt 6. It's also very close to Black Pond Brews if you want grab some growler fills while you're in the area.
Thanks for all the feedback. I took the trip down RT6 and hit a few of the recommended spots, pretty good. Went to North East Wine & Spirits (Plainfield), had a nice display area and picked up 1/2 case of SeaHag. Stopped by New York Pizza, decent taplist. Headed over to Brooklyn and stopped in B's Discount Liquors. Oddly enough I wound up picking up some Captain's Daughter (RI). Finally stopped at the other North East Wine & Spirits. Smaller, less organized spot, but grabbed a bunch of Crooked Stave and pieced together a mixed 6 of random CT beers to try. Surprised the two sister stores had fairly different selection. Overall, pretty happy -- thanks for the help. (Drive was about 40 minutes away, not bad)
I came across crooked stave once or twice before in CT, actually the NE Wine & Spirits on RT6 had half a dozen different beers of theirs, grabbed a bunch.
quick follow up, hit the groton shop, plenty of sea hag - but nothing really special otherwise, not bad though
