    IPA=India Pale Ale
IIPA=Imperial India Pale Ale or Double IPA

What would the third I in a Triple IPA stand for?

The third "I" stands for "I am truly naive to believe that a 'triple IPA' is qualitatively different than a 'double IPA'".

Mongo and Hopsickle are powerhouses, love for both. Hop Craic I didn't like, and certinly at the price they charge, it's big, but it's as bitter as most session IPAs, which I hate.

Triple IPA.....Pretty sure at this point you are just freebasing hops. Hey, whatever floats your boat.....I don't judge.

The term has been helpful to me. I know when I see something labeled a Triple IPA to expect something north of 10% abv.

I think you have a typo and meant to say, "Sometimes more is not more bitter."

I've been tilting at this windmill for years. I don't even like the term "Double". Anything over 8%ABV is an Imperial.

I prefer imperial IPA over triple IPA or double IPA will work as well.

"Imperial" meant the beer was brewed for export to the Russian Imperial Court. as in Russian Imperial Stout.

These days, it means the marketing of the beer wants you to believe it is something special.

If it has any actual meaning at all, it is higher ABV resulting from more malts, generally requiring the use of more hops to maintain balance, but it is not necessarily any more bitter (and frequently less bitter) than the "ordinary" version of the same style.

We're about to start a two week event here in Washington called the Hop Mob Roadshow. Many of the local breweries brew a "triple" IPA or two for this roving event, most of which are over 10% ABV. It's great.

I don't care if they end up with a octo IPA, just don't create a new style for each.

I guess it's not any more ridiculous than Belgian quads or tripels, which I think are perfectly reasonable classifications.

But I wish people would get over their IPA obsessions already... It's just one style out of many - why are so many people fixated on it?

Perhaps when it comes to tripling a beer I get lost in the math.

Yes. If the term "Triple IPA" did not exist, it would be necessary to invent it. It beats the hell out of "Super Duper IPA" or "Kick-Ass IPA."
    Because they like it?

Do we need terms like Session IPA or New England IPA? No but there’s such a wide variety IPAs out there I don’t think it hurts to differentiate them by category.
Also I kind of like seeing the term Triple IPA on a package, makes it an easy decision for me not to buy it.
