I set up a trade with a very established trader (over 150 trades, perfect feedback) on 6/13. He had originally messaged me about a thread I had created looking for a Jam the Radar, among other bottles. After a quick negotiation, we settled on a 3:2, with me sending (2) Tommie Sjef sours and a Morning Bell for Jam the Radar and a Casey Family Preserves Blackberry. The only caveat was that he did not have the Casey in hand. He noted that he would have the Casey "in the relatively near future, likely next week". I told him that there wasn't any rush and that I would actually be near his area in August for vacation, if he wanted to do something in person. He said he was "down to lock in the 3:2 swap".

Fast forward to last Friday, 7/14, when I messaged him as a reminder that I would be down near his location in 3 weeks time. I received no response and followed up again yesterday, 7/17, asking for an update. He responded this morning saying that this trade "fell off of his radar" and that he had "sent the Jam the Radar to a regular trading partner".

I am not out any bottles and it isn't the worst of circumstances compared to some of what I see on this forum, but it is annoying and seems to be happening more and more frequently. I did not "request a trade" with him because he did not have the Casey in hand yet and I was expecting an update when he received it. That may be an oversight on my behalf but its easier than requesting a trade and then having to get it removed or let it expire if the trader does not acquire said bottle, IMO. And yes, that has happened to me before.

Anyways, mods, please move/delete if this does not satisfy the criteria of a "bad trader thread". Thanks in advance for any responses.

That sucks and bad form on other traders part. I think since you didn't send a trade request, you are out of luck. If you did and he had accepted, then he would be on the hook to get you the beer or a substitute you agreed on. If not, he could have been subject to negative feedback.

    Agree completely with @jrnyc

Crummy this happened to you but not worthy of a bad trader thread. When you're planning a trade that is more than a month out, you have to expect there's a chance that things will fall through, especially when all the bottles are not in hand. One of the many reasons I don't "pre-trade."

I don't disagree that it doesn't necessarily constitute a Bad Trader thread but it should constitute something. This wasn't really a pre-trade either. He offered the bottle up as it was his but he hadn't yet received it. Also, we never planned for it to be an IP deal as opposed to a deal that needed to be shipped. I only posed it to him as a possibility. He was supposed to get in touch with me once he had the Blackberry FP in hand to discuss the shipping/meeting specifics. Thanks for the feedback though!

He would be on my personal bad trader list but doesn't quite meet the cut for BA primarily because there was no formal trade request. Real douche move on his part.

Absolutely correct. And if you make a mistake like this guy, you rectify it by sending a "sorry" bottle or arranging a new, more favorable trade.

What you don't do is simply throw up your hands and walk away. Bad form.

I don't normally jump on these things, but how I read this is that it "fell off his radar" means a "frequent trader" offered him something better.

Not sure about anyone else, but I set bottles that I will be trading aside, mark them, etc. I don't ever just lackadaisically agree to trades and hope I have the bottle whenever it rolls around if it doesn't happen *tomorrow*.

My thoughts exactly. As soon as I agree to a swap, I immediately remove the beer from my "gots" and physically retrieve the bottles to set aside for the trader. If I didn't do that, I'd have very little idea of what I currently had and what was in the process of being sent out.

As far as the "fell off my radar" comment is concerned, I'd like to give him the benefit of the doubt, but I'm skeptical. Just entirely forgetting about a trade altogether is pretty tough to do in one month's time.

This is what I did when I noticed that a trade I had agreed to wasn't going to be fulfilled because I didn't realize I was out one of the two bottles. We never opened an official trade but I was supposed to be trading away a Rare '15 + BCBCS '16 for some Hill Farmstead bottles. When I realized I actually didn't have a Rare '15, I sent the trader the BCBCS '16 anyway as an apology.

And you know what he did? He sent me some bottles back. Great experience with the guy and would trade with someone like that in a heart beat.

^^^the above are the guidelines for *bad trader* threads. Occasionally, we as moderators will make an exception or two if not ALL of the criteria is met in starting a thread. The main ones * criteria*, are making sure a trade request is sent on BA, beer has been sent by atleast one party, and communication has taken place between the two parties involved to try and resolve the issue amongst themselves.

We dont get involved if trades are made outside of BA.

In any case, anyone can message a moderator if they have any questions or need advice. My inbox is always open for assistance.

    Hope that helps.

    Cheers,
    Dave

Certainly something a bit sketchy going on on his side, but I think you are better off for not sending the Tommie Sjef bottles for bottle logic and american sours
