Going to be brewing a citrus-forward IPA this week as a test batch for my friend's wedding. He'd like to use the following hops and I'm not sure how best to layer them for dry hopping: Citra Mosaic Simcoe Amarillo This will be a "Northeast" IPA and was thinking the rest of the hop schedule would be something like: .75oz Warrior (First Wort) .50oz Citra (10 min) .50oz Mosaic (10 min) .50oz Simcoe (10 min) 1oz Citra (whirlpool at 170 for 30 min) 1oz Mosaic (whirlpool at 170 for 30 min) 1oz Simcoe (whirlpool at 170 for 30 min) 1oz Amarillo (whirlpool at 170 for 30 min) Normally for a dry hop, I'll do somewhere between 5-6oz for a 5 gallon batch. If just using 2, I'll usually pick one that I want to be a little more dominant and give it the extra oz (2oz Mosaic, 3oz Citra, for example) but I've never tried to use this many. Any advice on how these all play together? Maybe I skip one entirely? Thanks in advance...
I have homebrewed with all of the hops you have considered. I have brewed solely (for all favor/aroma additions) with Citra, Mosaic and Simcoe. I have only brewed using with Amarillo as a co-hop. FWIW below is my experience of each of those hops from a hop aroma/flavor potency perspective: · Citra: Extremely potent · Mosaic: Very Potent · Simcoe: Fairly Potent · Amarillo: Fairly Potent How you would apportion those hops across you overall amount of 5-6 hops I would suggest is dependent on which hop aromas/flavors you want to feature. Needless to say but my above assessment of potency is based upon a number of factors: my personal palate, the particular hop crops of the hops, etc. Maybe the polls from the Averagely Perfect NEIPA will provide some insight here: https://www.beeradvocate.com/commun...-ipa-poll-31-traditional-dry-hop-qtys.433578/ Cheers!
Thanks for the info. Guess I'll have to ask him for his preference. This will be the first batch of many to get the recipe right, so we can always adjust next time too.
FWIW, for my palate: Citra = mostly tropical fruit flavor Mosaic = mostly berry fruit flavors (but lately I have been noticing dank in commercially brewed beers which feature Mosaic hops) Simcoe = mostly piney flavors Amarillo = mostly citrus flavors Needles to say but each individual's palate is unique/different. Cheers!
I like Amarillo, but unless a high percentage of the hop additions the other three hops will overwhelm it, IMO
