I'm visiting Duluth from the Seattle area for a week. Last fall, some Duluth area BAs gave me some very good suggestions for my last visit to the family. So I figured I'd try again for this visit. What's been released lately that I should look for? I've seen about the Founders events next week, and will try to hit one of those. Anything else that you would suggest, either in Duluth or Superior? Any favorites now available from the local breweries, or Surly or New Glarus, or other? Thanks for your help.
Thirsty Pagen in Superior as well as Keyport Liquor store nearby. Keyport will have Toppling Goliath stuff (and New Glarus). In Duluth, stop at the Duluth Grill and Bent Paddle. If you have time head north to Castle Danger in Two Harbors. Nice drive and you can stop at Gooseberry Falls on the way. Fitgers has ok beer and food, stop at Burrito Union (owned by Fitgers) for awesome breakfast burritos though. A good liquor store in Duluth is Mount Royal. Surly Todd the Axeman is out now and easy to get.
Keyport in Superior just had a fresh drop of Psuedo Sue & they always have some interesting growler fills (Surly's Cacao Bender is great). Fitger's has bottles of their Constellation series. Mount Royal just got Apricot Vista and currently has buy one get one free on some prior Schell's Noble Stars.
For Castle Danger I'd recommend their BA George Hunter Stouts. The regular is bland, but the BAs kick it up to where it should be.
Another vote for Castle Danger well worth the short drive from Duluth. Wife and I went and picked up some sandwiches from Louises's Place just a block away and ate the sandwiches at the brewery.
I guess I haven't been there for almost a year but I would argue Fitger's has better than "ok" beer. I rank them as one of the top in the state.
Agreed. I was there last weekend and everything I tried was exceptional. I couldn't believe that they still had Constellation bombers for sale downstairs, after trying a few of them on tap. Also, they have some of the best cask beer that I've ever had. Cask Pineapple El Nino was amazing. So fluffy.
Castle Danger has some good stuff, and the taproom is beautiful/there's a slight view of the lake. Bent Paddle, and Fitger's are musts imo.
Not to step on anyone's toes, but it'd be sweet if people would post to this established thread: http://www.beeradvocate.com/community/threads/duluth-superior-visits-and-helpful-info.306847/ I have the goal of incorporating up to date tips and FAQs into the main post and re-post monthly/quarterly, in a similar fashion to the Minneapolis/St. Paul thread. Its helpful if the tips stay in the same place for that sake.
Thanks for all the suggestions so far. The highlight so far, in just a couple of days, is the Pseudosue from Keyport; I'd had this on tap in Madison a couple of years ago, but that was just the once. Now I've got a few cans to enjoy with my relatives. I've been here before, so I've some experience with Fitger's, Bent Paddle, Thirsty Pagan, Mount Royal, and so forth. It's good to be back.
No rumor. I didn't have it but have had another BA RIS there which was tasty. I believe they used the same RIS I had before.
