There was a thread about the line for beer labels and names a couple weeks back. While I still stand by what I said in that brewers should be able to brew a beer they see fit, and call it and label it as they please, I won’t be supporting this brewery or purchasing this beer. Cheers.

Unless the price is 'duvalish', I'm down for trying one or two.

I just saw this a few hours ago when snatching up some bottles of the original. I almost bought some, but it also mentions 6 types of hops + dry hopping. I'm usually not a huge fan of esters/phenols paired with heavy doses of hops, so I figure I'll wait for a store to sell singles.

Not that this should change things for you, but just in case you are unaware of the full branding context - Duvel is Dutch for devil… so this is an association for them that is old and wide. I imagine most consumers of their beer in the US are unaware of the translation, and some might think this new beer is either very odd or shocking as a result. The disconnect wouldn’t exist for a Belgian consumer.

Many years ago I had a box sent to me by Merchant du Vin, then selling Duvel in the US. There were several big bottles of Duvel and a friend and I drank two fairly quickly. I learned early on that Duvel is very sneaky and the name is totally perfect. I also used to buy it on trains in Europe, and girls loved it! A little bit goes a long way.

Curious way to promote a beer though. As we can see, the devil thing, even if just in jest, alienates some folks. Certainly draws some attention, as the marketers likely know.

If a series of numbers is what worries people I don’t know what to say. Especially given the variance in reported vs. actual ABVs, as anything between 6% and 7% could in reality hit the mark (of the beast). Perhaps best to avoid all beers in those ranges?

(Disclaimer: I don’t know what the actual +/- variance is for ABV.)

That’s a foolish assessment. If I I go to the beach I’m not worried my towel will be laying in that many grains of sand. I’m not worried I will spend that amount of seconds in the shower. The issue is when a product is openly marketed with that number as the gimmick, if you will. For me personally, it just doesn’t click. Just like someone may not want to buy a beer with a serial killer on the front. Cheers.

Duvel doesn't normally have super strong phenolics/esters, so maybe it'll be good? Saw it at the Davidson's off County Line Rd. They still have the triple hop Citra one, too.

Same link § 7.65 Alcohol content.
Obviously, this applies only to beers sold in the U.S. of A. Countries in which Devil Worship is more common may have other labeling regulations.

Widely available in Belgium and France for a year or so. I’ve had it a handful of times. It’s enjoyable but doesn’t beat regular Duvel (The iconic Belgian strong pale ale).

Try it though. It’s definitely not a bad beer. @RaulMondesi got to try it after I offered him one when he came over in my town. He made the same observation and review if memory serves. Good, but don’t expect mind boggling stuff.

Those Duvel Tripel Hop Citra/Cashmere as IPAs were and still are very worthy. Ultimately it’s hard to beat the orginal Duvel.

    I agree with you there:

    "Overall:

In one word: EXCELLENT. There is just tons going on in this beer and it all works together beautifully – like a top class symphony!

Also worth mentioning is that this beer is a high alcohol beer (9.5% ABV) but I perceived nothing from this high alcohol level: no heat, etc. An indication of a well brewed beer."

I have amazing memories of trains across Europe and Duvel was a staple. Coming up from Geneva to the beautiful small town of Gex, overlooking Geneva, we stayed in the Belle Vue Hotel, near the small train station. We met a French nuclear scientist , his gorgeous Brazilian wife and her sister and he treated us to dinner that began with Duvel, progressed into wonderful older Burgundies, and ended with raucous laughter and vintage port. That was one Helluva night, one that I'll always remember. I had a Duvel on the train the next day as we wound our way towards Paris to meet my best friend under The Eiffel Tower at noon on the 4th of July 1970. Not to mention the roots of the story and a young writer from San Francisco that years later wrote Fear of Flying.

You do realize that 666 is just a number that somehow has become a symbol of the “devil”. Till proof comes to light the devil is just a made up thing, your serial killer comparison is an actual real thing. Maybe there is a devil, maybe they look nothing like what people portray them as. When folks look in the mirror they might see the devil. If there was a 777 beer how would you feel?

This monkeys gone to heaven (no true relation to this subject but it felt right)

    Enjoy

OK, since it has been discussed around the edges, I just want to point out that it is not so vague as "somehow".

It is a direct quote from biblical prophecy; Rev. 13:18 to be precise. (And, while on the topic, I'll point out that it is the number of a man referred to in this prophecy as "the beast", not of Satan/the devil directly.)

    Horns Up!

    The Number of the Beast

The song opens with a spoken word passage, read by English actor Barry Clayton, which quotes Revelation 12:12 and Revelation 13:18. According to lead vocalist, THEE Bruce Dickinson, the band originally asked Vincent Price to read the intro, but decided to hire Clayton after Price refused to do it for anything less than £25,000.

    The Trooper

Written by bassist and founding-member Steve Harris, the song is based on the Charge of the Light Brigade at the Battle of Balaclava 1854, which took place during the Crimean War, and inspired by Lord Tennyson's 1854 poem of the same name.

    Hallowed Be Thy Name

It's the tale of a prisoner about to be hanged, featuring some of Harris' most philosophical lyrics. "Several band-members have since stated that it is one of their favourite tracks, with Bruce Dickinson describing it as "fantastic" and that performing it live is like "narrating a movie to the audience.

The serial killer comparison was referenced because were talking about how things make people feel here. Some things bother you that might not bother me and vice versa. That’s okay. I felt empowered to state what I stated initially, just as you should if you feel strongly about something. Cheers.
