I don't consider it an English IPA and I actually get annoyed when it gets called one (lol, I know it's not that serious).. but GLBC doesn't even label it as an English IPA.. Commodore Perry is basically Fuggle and Simcoe hops, and the Fuggle hops gives it that "English" vibe.. but it's a unique American IPA, IMO..

I like Boulder Beer Cold Hop, which they label as an English-Style IPA.. I haven't had it in awhile, but I remember really liking it.. I never liked FFF Blackheart, but it was well crafted, which might mean I'm simply not crazy about the style..

Oh - so IPAs originated in the USA then? There never is or was an English/British version? I must be terribly misinformed.

OP - best American-brewed one I've had (on cask) is this:

Obviously countless great examples in the UK

Had the opportunity to have Thornbridge Jaipur on draft. It was outstanding IMHO. I would really like to find others to try as well. Thanks for starting this thread! Great topic!

Not to nitpick on Christmas but . . . I wouldn't call any beer purchased at Yankee Stadium a bargain. Call it a better option since it's far from a bargain.

Brewers making the original IPAs (those actually going to India) would have used a lot of imported hops. The UK used half the entire world's hop harvest and could only grow a fraction of what it needed. In fact some beers were brewed entirely from imported ingredients.
The Scots were great IPA brewers and often used Continental hops such as Saaz.Being on the coast they found it easy to get shiploads in.
Ron has written many interesting articles on the subject such as http://barclayperkins.blogspot.co.uk/2011/09/lets-brew-wednesday-1868-younger-xp.html

I generally don't like English IPAs too much (or Belgian IPAs), but there are exceptions. Jaipur is one of them; excellent beer.

You know now that I think about it, I think EIPAs are more my thing than American IPAs and I do seem to enjoy them a bit more. Yards, Brooklyn Brewery's East India Pale Ale, Flying Fish's Hopfish IPA, Goose Island's...

I just looked it up and Commodore Perry doesn't have fuggles. It's simcoe, Willamette, and cascade.

It goes a long way. GL uses an English ale strain but the flavors from it are fairly neutral.

They must've changed it recently or something because I'm 100% positive they used to use Fuggle hops along with Simcoe.. Same goes for Lake Erie Monster.. that's what they always stated on their website, but maybe they recently changed it..

Brooklyn's offering tasted too metallic. Does anyone else get that "metallic" taste with Brooklyn's version? It's drinkable, but not something I would session with. Especially with the high ABV.

Gold Stock from NEBCO...an EIPA on this site but not sure if that's the best way to describe it. No matter, one of the 3 or 4 best beers I've ever had.
