Imperial Cold IPA Rolling Out in 19.2 Ounce Cans

Paso Robles, CA: Firestone Walker has doubled down on its signature Hopnosis IPA to create Double Hopnosis—an Imperial Cold IPA made to mesmerize the senses.

Inspired by the iconic West Coast style and brewed with new-age Cryo Hops®, Double Hopnosis (8.3% ABV) delivers massive flavors of tropical fruit and citrus with a hypnotic sense of balance.

Double Hopnosis is now rolling out to Firestone Walker markets in 19.2-ounce cans for ultimate convenience.

“Double Hopnosis is brewed with our favorite emerging hops from the Pacific Northwest and Southern Hemisphere, then extravagantly double dry-hopped with Cryo Hops® to take the flavors and mouthfeel to the next level,” said Brewmaster Matt Brynildson. “We call this our new-school rendition of a classic imperial West Coast IPA.”

Double Hopnosis is dry hopped with liberal amounts of Mosaic Cryo Hops® as well as Citra, Chinook and Vic Secret, and is brewed with a total of nearly five pounds of hops per barrel. Cryo Hops® are made by collecting the concentrated lupulin from whole-leaf hops, which contains the pure resins for bitterness and aromatic oils.

“Cryo Hops® play the same role in Double Hopnosis as they do in the original Hopnosis: provide intense hop aroma and flavor with incredible integration, enabling us to make a hop-forward beer that is low in bitterness, super smooth, and delicious,” Brynildson said.

Like Hopnosis, Double Hopnosis is also fermented with Firestone Walker’s house lager yeast in the Cold IPA style, and it employs proprietary hopping techniques to push tropical thiols to the forefront of the aromatic profile.

“Double Hopnosis has roots in the original era of West Coast imperial IPAs while showcasing the Cold IPA style,” Brynildson said. “The overall experience is modernized by a lower impression of bitterness, a higher rate of tropical character and a new achievement of balance and drinkability.”

Yep...everyone is following the trend of 8-10% DIPAs in 19.2 oz cans. Four Loko for hop heads.

Hmm, does this new product hit all of the requirements for a New Wave (or whatever term the kids are using now) IPA?

    · Fermented with a lager yeast vs. ale yeast? check

    · ABV > 8%? check

    · Brewed using a hop product (e.g., Cryo hops, Incognito, etc.)? check

    · Has flavors that make you feel like you are in Bora Bora? check

    · Packaged in a moar/large format can? check

My guess is the that the underpants gnomes will state “Profit!”.

I like the regular Hopnosis. When I shop at Sprouts grocery store it’s one of the Six packs I buy here and there. I like the idea of making an imperial version but the 19.2 oz only seems like an odd choice. I guess double mind haze in 19.2 oz cans are doing well. Funny how bombers have faded away and now 19.2 oz cans is a thing and being labeled convenient.

much prefer this in 12 oz cans or bottles.

I feel like the bombers were classier. I usually only saw them at bottle shops and certain grocery stores that sold higher end beer. The beer inside some in bombers in my area had a pretty wide range of styles.

The cans I’ve only seen in gas stations and appear to be mostly high abv ipas.

bombers usually meant seasonal or special releases. Not gas stations beers. It’s an interesting trend that high abv ipas in 19.2 cans is convenient. I like how Sierra Nevada and new Belgium have the abv on the can in clear and large format.

Anybody noticed that SN Atomic Torpedo's ABV has risen recently from 8.2 to 9.2?

also, noticed that the 19.2 oz cans of voodoo imperial ranger and fruit force are 9%. So it’s like 9.2% is just a bit higher. It’s also, prominently on the can.

Yes. I have had both versions and reviewed the 9.2% one recently. I am not a big DIPA person anymore so can't see me wanting to drink it often but it was a solid change and I enjoyed it.

I indulged in one last night, the stovepipe option! That's an easy sipper IIPA. :beers: Kinda what Double Hopnosis is going for, I reckon.

Say what you will about the marketing and the business strategies, but Double Hopnosis is a pretty epic showcase of Vic Secret hops. Probably the best I’ve ever come across in clear ipa.

for fans of Hopnosis, know that this is a different recipe. It’s not just a bigger version of the original. But damn if the double version isn’t a perfect blend of fruity resinous American hop backbone, and a brilliant Vic secret front man.
Also, I dare anyone to tell you this is an IPL blindfolded. The yeast is not relevant to the tasting notes whatsoever.

FW is really nailing it from a recipe standpoint. Hopefully they are rewarded for it. It’s not like the guy at the gas station is going to recognize the brilliance the same way a nerd like me will. But this lager yeast supposedly helps with shelf stability, so maybe that will have some effects
