...to start with anyway. The wife and I will be in the north for 3 weeks in May and are compiling our research. Other areas will be Seahouses/Holy Island, probably near Hexham, Keswick or Kendall, and all over the Dales.
Suggested places? Loved haunts? Pubs you always visit when near?
Bonus if you can suggest us a football-friendly place in York to watch the FA Cup final on the 19th.

The beer scene up 'Seahooses' way is on the shit side but there are a few decent places dotted around. I remember the John Bull Inn sin Alnwick serving a really good pint. I like The Hop in York, which is ran by Ossett. Their Silver King is something else.

    OK, here we go.

York has an enormous number of great pubs, as I'm sure you're already aware. Rather than try to list them all, I'm going to refer you to a previous thread on a similar topic. Comment number 10 by Aye has a comprehensive list for York. The list is a couple of years old but the majority of it remains valid.

    My personal recommendations for York:
Trembling Madness - great little pub/bottle shop and a must-see; they will change location later in the year so see it while you can.
Brew York - York's newest microbrewery, they have a tap-room on site
The Falcon Tap - small pub with a great array of good beer
Pivni - central location near the Shambles and fantastic beer
The York Tap - at the train station; 30 taps/pumps of great beer
The Maltings - Lovely pub near the station
The Three-legged Mare - a York brewery pub near the Minster; good choice of beer

For football, York's 'sport pub' has always been the Terrace. Not really a destination for good beer though. I'm sure other pubs/bars will show the footie - ask for recommendations when you get here.

A couple of years ago I stayed up near Seahouses with family, though we didn't visit a ton of pubs. Seahouses itself is known for seafood. The one pub we went to was The Greys Inn in Embleton (nearby). Traditional character with good food and a solid selection of quality beer.

While you're there, take a stroll to Dustanburgh castle - it makes a lovely profile against the coast. Alnwick is also worth a visit; I highly recommend the gardens if you like that sort of thing.

I don't have so much advice for your other destinations. If you do head over to the Lakes, pay a visit to the Hawkshead brewery. And when in the Dales make sure to visit Malham cove.

If you have any further questions about York just drop me a line....

For beer, nothing to suggest beyond those places listed above, but if you haven't got walking the York wall in your sightseeing plans I can recommend it as a way of getting a great overview of the city.

The York suggestions so far all look solid.

It might be worth looking into a stop at Berwick? It's about the nearest decent sized place to Holy Island and Seahouses, is decently pretty and historic, and has about the best beer that side of Newcastle. Otherwise, while that chunk of Northumberland is beautiful and fascinating, it didn't seem to be amazing for beer when we were up there.

Also, Bamburgh Castle is fantastic to look at from the outside, but it's a bit of a waste of time and money going inside unless you really like massive stacks of irrelevant Victorian stuff.

In the Dales you can't heave a half brick without hitting a classic pub, it's great. The Green Dragon at Hardraw and the Falcon at Arncliffe stick in mind as being particularly legit.

It's worth getting a copy of CAMRA's Good Beer Guide (or the app version) if you're going to be touring around.
