On the way back from the Munich Airport today the wife and I stoppen by the Brewery and had Lunch at Weihstephaner. Always a top place.

Their Hefeweizen is my favorite of the style. Recently after years of searching I finally found a couple of bottles of their kristalweizen. Excellent. Vitus is liquid gold. I’d love to visit there one day. Cheers.

While I was there they have a couple of new beers which I have added to BA.

    Yes, I like this idea.

No, I think this is less valuable than the effort to maintain it.

Now for something completely different-- Bärentöter German Sour Gose Bock from Ritterguts.

My first thought is "a bock gone bad," which is a bit unfair since the brewer seems to want it this way. While the stuff is quite repellent at first mouthful, it gets a little better as you sip. The salt and spices add to the weirdness. It's slightly sweet and slightly sour, a combination that only Rodenbach seems to have mastered. Flavors of strange fruit, then some cinnamon lingering. It's not bitter but the aftertaste has some bark and barrel. I can't say this is a pleasure, but anyone who enjoys trying truly weird brews will want it.

That is quite an oddball. Sounds awful actually. Hey, but you never know until you try something. Cheers!

Flensburger Dunkel. Date on the bottle is 1.8.26. Was this bottled last month, or am I not getting that right? Seems almost impossible for an import.

Euro-style date is Aug. 1, 2026. Looks like an expiration date. An 18 month span between bottling and exp. date is common. So it's possible that it was bottled about Feb. 1, 2025.

I see, so not the 6 month span like US best buy dates. Thanks!

Still pretty good date for an import here in a small town in TX. It's a decent dunkel for sure.

A six month age is probably fine. And I'm not in an area to find fresh German beers, so I've had good tasting year old German lagers.

...I just stumbled upon this thread earlier today...

    BRAUWELT Köln -- Sünner Kölsch
    Kölsch
    ABV: 4,8%; pouring temperature: 42.8 ℉; bottling info: L148; best before: 1 16
    Source: local purchase

...a generally good beer, but a recent version I had from Chuckanut was incredible...

...I've had it a few times...their may even have been a BA online tasting with kölsch beers...regardless, I've posted two reviews of it on the beer's BA web page...didn't bother updating anything this time...

...off the subject of kölsch beers but still dealing with German beers, I lived for five years in (West) Germany (roughly 1986 - 1991) -- two in West Berlin (Tempelhof Zentral Flughaven), three in Sembach Air Base)...there was a great brewery in the Rheinland Pfalz called Bischof (Privatbrauerei Bischoff GmbH & Co. KG) that made some great beers...it was located in Winnweiler, survived 150 years, but closed its doors in 2022...it was a small operation (like so many German breweries), but I do recall finding some of their beer in a Florida shop (Total Wine?) sometime in the late 1990s or 2000 while on a USAF Space Command IG inspection at Patrick AFB and Cape Canaveral AFS...and I still wonder if Berlin still has Schultheiss and Berliner Kindl (I preferred the Kindl)...anyway, I love all the classic German beer styles, so now that I'm watching this thread, I'll be back periodically...

I have access to pretty much the same German beers most everyone else does: Paulaner, HB, Ayinger, Reissdorf, Gaffel, etc. Maybe a few like Goller and G. Schneider & Sohn that many don't, but it's interesting to see what everyone comes up with that I have never seen before.

My last trip up to Asheville proper in late June yielded Brauerei Göller Dunkel and BRAUWELT Köln Sünner Kölsch. Should be investigating in the near future.
    Cheers!
