Yeah I totally agree. I may have painted them with too wide a brush as I do like many of their beers. But for me when they fail they fail hard, the ones I don't like tend to be ones I really really don't like!

Besides gruit, which has already been mentioned, I can't think of another possibly herbal style. Although I've have a few cherry ales that have a medicinal cherry flavor, like a Ludens or Halls cough drop. A lot of those tend to be seasonal, though.

I'm in the camp that believes hops replaced Gruit for a reason.

Some styles of German lagers have a herbal hop presence like Marzens, Altbiers and some Vienna Lagers, though maybe not with the prominence you are looking for.

There's some less common beers that use gruit (herbs) instead of hops

Always wondered if any brewer ever took up this offer from the large brewing supply house, Dehls & Stein, Inc. and if they did, did they just label it as "_____ Ale" without any other info (which was typical of the period and, apparently OK with the ATF at the time).

Yeah, agreed with poster above on Forbidden Root in Chicago (botanical themed brewery) although a lot of what they can is more in the dense ipa/haze bro craze. Their botanical, wild, or flower beers are typically more in crowlers. Fernetic was interesting though...try the Great Lakes Forum, and find the Forbidden Root thread going there -- good people.

I'm going to echo some of @TongoRad 's comments.

You can keep an eye out for any fernet inspired beers... but chances are these won't be ideal due to rarity, cost, brewing schedule, etc. As suggested, try any gruit beers as well, but these will probably be in the same category as the fernet beers (if a bit more common, but probably much more off the mark of what you'd want). If you're determined no matter how hard they might be to obtain, keep Forbidden Root brewery in Chicago in mind (as has been mentioned).

I'll add that you should also keep an eye open for any barley wines with odd ingredients but not aged in bourbon barrels. I had one recently made with sloe berries that flirted a little with some of those flavors... but I thought it tasted terrible.

I would not recommend going to any beer made with something from an evergreen tree. I can't see that being the flavor you're likely after.

In the end, I'd just keep an eye open for anything mentioned... but not actively pursue anything beer related. Jump into the world of amari (plural for amaro) instead. There you'll find a whole 'nother world of interesting beverages to scratch your itch better than a beer could.

It was probably published to coincide with Gruit Day.

Theres a "Day" for everything nowadays!

That was cool though - I was interested to see who participated in Gruit Day.

They're a bit pricey, and you'll likely have to trade for 'em, but these guys likely have several things that would fit your bill: https://propolisbrewing.com/
