Great Lakes Dortmunder and Eddy Fitz. Love both of them, so a friend gave me a sampler box from Great Lakes for Christmas, because she could not remember which beer I liked, and knew it was at least one in that box. Commodore Perry was in that box, and the first one I remember struck me as odd tasting, but the second and third had me seeing a 3rd Great Lakes into my life.......and the floodgates opened up for that style from there.......as well as opened me me up to try alot more styles other than sticking with only the tried and true favorites.

I swear IPA's have an addicting quality to them, once sold, you are not quick to turn away.....

    Cheers!!

Toppling Goliath Pseudo Sue is the only one I'll actually crave and want more of. Otherwise to this day I still can't hack IPA's. Sue rocks though but nothing else I've tried yet makes me want more.

I can remember this well actually, it was at a small family party at my brother-in-laws in MI in the spring of 2011. A good friend of his wanted to go pick up some beers, and I went with. We picked up a 6xer each of Two Hearted and Centennial - they were a bit puckering at the time to be honest, but I loved the balance of the subtle sweetness that accompanied the hops, and I was immediately interested in IPA's. He also had a really old bottle of Oracle that he gave me - it wasn't very good, but I knew that Bell's would have this fresh in a few months. I purchased a case of Oracle from Bell's late that August, and I've been smitten with IPA/DIPA's ever since. In fact, I'm going to pick up a fresh 6xer of Fresh Squeezed this afternoon, I always enjoy trying new IPA's fresh when they are available (Just tried 2XONE for the first time last week, it is Very Good) and Lagunita's Sucks has won my heart for a lifetime. Cheers!

Also Dogfish 90, with a little help from SN Torpedo. Now I always strive to have some kind of IPA in the fridge in addition to whatever else I'm drinking. Still don't get into most regular IPA's and prefer doubles.

Really, APAs (and East Coast stuff like Harpoon) were what got me accustomed to more hoppy beers, not "true American IPAs". Dogfish Head 90 pushed me over once and for all.

I commend your honesty. While I love hoppy beers, I can tell when people don't like them, but are afraid they'll look bad if they don't go for them..and I'm just over there wanting them to get something they'll actually enjoy.

As for my IPA that got me over the slump: Good People IPA.

Green Chop Session IPA--Badger State Brewing Co. (Green Bay, WI)...has a hint of mango flavor...usually I hate IPA but this is one of the top 5 best beers I've ever tried.

Stone IPA for me. I was into the fringe of craft at the time drinking a lot of fat tire, SNPA and SA lager. A buddy of mine brought some Stone IPA to a 4th of July cookout where I was drinking miller light and gave me a bottle. The first one was way over the top for my palate but enjoyable. I tried to go back to my ML after drinking the Stone and just couldn't do it - was never a big light beer fan but drank it in the summer occasionally - from that point on, my light beer days were over. Went back to the Stone a few days later, by the second bottle, I could taste the citrus and pine and I was hooked. The rest is history.

Sierra Nevada Celebration was my first, but there was no hump. I loved the bitterness and how long the great aftertaste lasted.

Since I first tried it (after Celebration), Torpedo is my go-to year-round IPA with its aggressive bitterness. Comes across as more bitter and more like a wet hopped ale (green/vegetal) to me than most IPAs, too.

I think it was Hop Wallop, which at that point in time, was absolutely brilliant (I think they tinkered and ruined it over time IMO)

Funny to see so many bad first experiences with the Torpedo. That was in fact the beer that got me into the style! Something about the herbal pine-tree flavor really spoke to my 18-year-old blazey self.
