I recently relocated from Portland Oregon to ATL. I miss my favorite IPA's that don't get distro here aka all of 'em.

I'm curious what everyone recommends for IPA's in the Atlanta area?

I've had a few to mixed (at best) results. Creature Comforts IPA was very good but limited availability. Night on Ponce was disgusting - don't know if I got a bad batch or my standards are too high or what. Suggestions much appreciated!

Also, is there such thing as fresh hop beers here?

You should give Orpheus a shot, specifically this which should be available most places. Creature Comforts is always expanding production so hopefully Tropicalia will become easier for you to get.

Well, not knowing what you like, there's several IPA's and DIPA's around the Atlanta area.

Tropicalia is the favorite flavor these days, but limited as can be.

Orpheus has an IPA every "season". You can probably still get some Transmigration of Souls, and there's a new bone tablet ipa out now as well.

Monday Night has a decent IPA in Blind Pirate, and Blood Orange BP is out.

Sweetwater isn't that great, IMO, but I do crave their IPA from time to time, and it's worth checking out if you can find it fresh.

Avoid Red Brick if you thought Night on Ponce was bad. They don't do hoppy really well, but just redid the recipe for their Hoplanta.

Fresh hops are once a year. They're coming.

I would also add Burnt Hickory hoppy beers if fresh, cannon dragger, ezekiel's wheel, didjits once it comes back out.

Not local but CCB jai alai is back. Westbrook IPA and one claw are delicious if fresh. Wicked Weed is coming soon and Freak and pernicious are awesome. Foothills is coming soon too and I pray they send us their IPAs of the month!

We have local brewpubs Twains, 5 Seasons, Max Lagers, Wrecking Bar that will always have super fresh ipas on.

Also, where are you located in ATL? Best bet for fresh hops is to hit one of our growler shops. I can point you towards the closest one to you.

Welcome to ATL! Send me a pm if you want. I can tell you about some local gatherings/tastings in the area.

Sorry, I said fresh a lot--meaning brewed recently, not wet hop beers. Sorry for the confusion.

Hop City or Greens. Either should have it.

Currently in Atlanta trying some IPAs. So far, have really enjoyed Tropicalia, Cannon Dragger, Peace.War. (etc., but consider this a session IPA), and Red Hare Gangway.

Agree that Night on Ponce is mediocre, but their Prince of Pilsen is really tasty. Didn't much care for Southbound's Hop'lin, but did like their witbier (Scattered Sun). Still waiting to try Hop Hash and Transmigration.

I don't think you quite understand what fresh hops is. Technically, I think they need to go from vine to kettle within 24 hours to be considered fresh. Out of curiosity, are any hop varietals grown here in Atlanta?

Your in peach (and peanut) country amigo. I'm not a horticulturalist but I imagine it's wayyyyy to damn hot down there to grow a decent crop of hops. As others have said, Tropicallia is fantastic, probably the best Georgia made ipa in the state. Also Jai Alia (sp?) is great but made in Florida. Take a road trip up to Asheville and grab yourself some Wicked Weed or just sit back and wait for the distro to catch up. Foothills will be starting up soon too so you have that to look forward too....if your lucky they will start sending Jade down there.

Thank you, initiate. I know what fresh hops are. I was saying we don't get anything fresh hopped but once a year. So no, no local brewery is cultivating their own vines anywhere. I do appreciate your attempt at satire though.

My recommendation is to move back to Oregon if you want really good/world class (fresh) I/IIPA.

OP, based on my recent visit, the good news is that Georgia has many IPAs that are better than Night on Ponce. The bad news is, nothing in the same league as, say, RPM. Tropicalia is excellent, but still not quite at that level.
