Saw a beer at the liquor store today labeled as hemp ale, a style I didn't even know existed. Has anyone tried a hemp ale? How did you like it and does it taste or smell anything like hemp?

I know Uinta's Dubhe has hemp seeds in it, and it's pretty dang amazing. I've never ingested hemp in any other form, so I'm not the best judge, but I certainly enjoyed it.

I've had dubhe before and had know idea i contained hemp seeds. The taste wasn't noticeably hempy but it was quite good.

Hemp food/drink generally doesn't taste well to my palate

The only one I've had was also Dubhe. I wasn't sure what the hemp added but it was an awesome black ipa. I couldn't taste or smell anything that I could have attributed to the hemp, but as far as I know hemp might add a herbal flavor and might work really well with some beers.

I tried Fitger's Home Grown Hempen Ale, and as far as I could tell, the hemp was just a gimmick. Does hemp really have a flavor that would stand out anyway?

I've seen hemp ales before (Humboldt I believe) but never tried it.

There's not really a "hemp ale" style so much as the seeds are just as additional flavoring to other styles of beer, which are usually spiced pales. I've never had a great hemp ale, but the most palatable ones have been malty with added honey.

If by "tastes or smells like hemp" you mean to ask whether it resembles cannabis, the answer is no. Hemp ales are made from hemp seeds, and the hemp imparts a light, medicinal flavor to the brew.

Not my style, but can see the gimmick

It's tastes nothing like bud, if that's what your asking, lol.

I really like hemp beers, adds a light nutty character. I'd love to see a hemp seed brown ale, that'd be the move.

I second that. The only hemp beer I have ever seen is from Humboldt. Thought they could have made it a hop bomb but you're right in it being nutty. A gimmick beer nevertheless... It's got me to buy it at least once.

Yeah, if you've ever had roasted hemp seeds...that's basically what it adds to a beer, just lighter.

    Which beer from Humboldt?

Dangerous Man brewed this at least once:

I thought it was lovely. The fresh and earthy (as opposed to dried hemp we're all used to smelling) worked great with the nutty and mildly sweet base. Actually imparted a similar profile to fresh hop ales: green/herby/floral. Hops are the closest relative to hemp so its unusual its not brewed with more!

This ones meager score belies the solid beer it is. Just a strange style - I had to try it.
