I recently purchased some used ball lock kegs. From a retailer and guaranteed to hold pressure. One keg has a leak on the "in" valve when I put C02 on it. Pressing down on the CO2 intake seems to help, but doesn't stop it. Issue is not the C02 line valve as it is working on my other kegs. I've of course removed and cleaned the "in" valve. Any advise other than buying a new "in" valve?
If you can ascertain what the original poppets were in the keg (should be marked/etched on the side of the keg) ...then get those....not the universal poppets, imho
Does it also leak after you remove the quick disconnect (the grey/white plastic thing that terminates your CO2 line), or is it only when the quick disconnect is engaged with the keg's gas post? If it (the keg) only leaks when engaged, that would indicate a leaky quick disconnect or post outer O-ring. If it leaks when engaged, but the keg also leaks when there's nothing connected to the gas post, that would indicate a seal problem on the gas dip tube's O-ring.
The gas stops leaking when I remove the quick disconnect. when I attach the quick disconnect to a different keg I also do not get leaking..
Sounds like you need to replace the post outer O-ring. It's also (remotely) possible that the stainless steel post itself is damaged/deformed, rendering the post/QD interface leaky regardless of the O-ring's condition, but that would be rare, and I've never seen that myself.
BTW, I'm assuming you're new to kegging. If not, please ignore... don't pay homebrew store prices for post (or any) O-rings. They are all available much cheaper (in bulk) from McMaster-Carr. Here's an option for post O-rings: https://www.mcmaster.com/9452k23
Thanks everyone for the input. @VikeMan I replaced the o-ring on the post with one from an old keg of mine. It solved the problem. I've actually kegged for a long time, but have been on a homebrewing hiatus. Amazingly my old kegs have required very little work over the years. Routine cleaning always seemed to keep them in good shape. I also appreciate the recommendation for replacement o-rings. One reason why I made today's post is I do not have a local homebrew store close by, and with a keg full of beer I wanted to make sure I got the problem resolved quickly. Thanks again for the help.
And if you want a stylish red silicone o-ring for your gas posts they're available on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/111-Silicone...21KH25KQ8RJ&psc=1&refRID=XK24X283121KH25KQ8RJ
McMaster-Carr has some incredible prices on o-rings, but this is a far cry cheaper. 3 cents each for silicone post rings is only a fraction of a penny more than McMaster-Carr's price for Buna-N. Thanks for that link.
Does anyone use silicone o rings. I always have to fight my quick releases because of the rubber which inevitably gets torn up. Silicone seems like it might be more durable and slick
Well, this is embarrassing. I meant to post ^^^that^^^ link in Vikeman's thread "Uprright Freezer (Fermentation Chamber) Puzzler" where it's actually on topic. https://www.beeradvocate.com/commun...entation-chamber-puzzler.611002/#post-6471933
