The Laguintas Equinox is an excellent beer.Having tasted it for the first time, it seems more like an IPA than an APA. The label refers to it as a pale oat ale. The beer has a highly complex citrus flavor, and seems very hoppy. Or perhaps APA and IPA style lines can be difficult to distinguish? Usually, an APA doesn't have the complex and hoppy character of an IPA. Comments on the style of this beer?
Chalk it up to the liberties of the brewer.... really no diff between porter and stout alot of times either...just up to the brewer what they choose to market it as.
As the commenter above says, it's subjective and up to the brewer. Equinox is 8% and if given to most people unlabelled they would say it is an IPA. Just like Grunion is pretty much an IPA instead of an APA, and many of Evil Twin's porters could just as easily be stouts.
There is an ongoing thread on this topic: http://www.beeradvocate.com/community/threads/lagunitas-equinox.284296/ Cheers!
I really liked it, but wouldn't necessarily return to it - I may be more partial to barley than oat...
