They are a fairly new brewery from central VA that I was skeptical about at first (before I ever tried them, just weary of a new, expensive beer), but I am really starting to feel like they might be one of the best breweries in the area. The first beer I had by them was Enlightened Despot, a bourbon barrel stout (they say Pappy Van Winkle barrels), and I was blown away at how good it was. Easily up there with the best of the big names. I tried their Short Pump Saison and thought it was very nice, I was a little underwhelmed by the Three Pillars DIPA, but then this weekend I tried the Bourbon Barrel Tripel and was again blown away. Its an amazing beer, maybe the best BBA non-stout I've ever had. Not many people seem to be drinking them though, I went back to Whole Foods the next day just hoping to be able to get one more bottle, and the whole case was still sitting on the shelf.

If nothing else, these guys make solid beer and really know how to use a bourbon barrel.

Has anyone else had these? What are your thoughts?

I have only had two of their offerings, but they will be on my radar from here on out. I thought Three Chopt was quite good. And they have great labels too!

I like them. Short Pump Saison was really good. I've included that as an extra twice now - to Wisconsin and Michigan. Unfortunately, did not get to try the Enlightened Despot -- guess they didn't distribute that one. Four Pillars was terrible -- that really turned me off. BBA Three Chopt was really good, but would have liked more balance -- it was all barrel flavors and I felt like the base flavors were really fighting for room. I like barrel flavors, so it's all good -- kind of reminded me of a big bodied Chardonnay (oaky and buttery). Hoping their Nuclear Nugget makes its way up here. I'll drop some scratch on that. I think Lickinghole Creek is one reason the VA beer scene is really picking up.

I gotta admit I haven't tried any of their stuff... the name of the brewery kind of put me off as a gimmick, but with so many people talking about it I'm definitely interested.

Rustico @ Ballston is doing an event for them on Thursday. Anyone want to join me? I'll be the guy in an arm immobilizer (still). I'll get there a few before 6PM and try to get a bar table if no one else has first.

The Official Lickinghole Creek NoVa Launch Party - Rare Brews on Tap + Meet the Brewmaster!

Join us on Thursday as we welcome Lickinghole Creek Craft Brewery to the Northern Virginia market; we’ll also have Sean-Thomas Pumphrey, Co-Founder and Brewer of Lickinghole Creek, on hand to talk shop!

Lickinghole Creek Craft Brewery is a water-conscious, biologically friendly farm brewery carefully crafting Belgian-style beers and growing hops, barley and other adjuncts. The name pays homage to Little Lickinghole Creek, which runs through the farm’s rolling hills. We're pouring Goochland Quad, a 9.5% Belgian-style Quadrupel, of which only one batch was brewed, has notes of raisins, plums, prunes, & currants to create a memorable drinking experience. Also, Enlightened Despot, a limited-release Russian Imperial Stout aged 100 days in 15 year-old Pappy Van Winkle barrels; this one is not to be missed!
We’ll also have Three Chopt Tripel, brewed with American-grown Sterling and New Zealand-Grown Motueka hops that help impart a lemon and lime characteristic with a hint of tropical fruit; additionally, we nabbed the barrel-aged version of Three Chopt that has been aged in 15 Year-Old Kentucky bourbon barrels. This should make for a fantastic side-by-side comparison!

A few other flagship offerings will also be on hand: Short Pump, a Saison utilizing rye malt and Galena, Columbus & Nugget hops to create a distinguished hop character; and finally, Magic Beaver Belgian Pale Ale which combines the beauty of both Ameican & New Zealand hops along with a Belgian yeast strain.
There is no admission for this event and all Lickinghole Drafts will be priced individually by the glass and in 4 oz. pours.

The Official Lickinghole Creek Draft List:

    Goochland Quad
    Enlightened Despot Russian Imperial Stout
    Three Chopt Tripel
Three Chopt Tripel: Bourbon Barrel-Aged Tripel
    Short Pump Saison
    Magic Beaver Belgian Pale Ale

they did. most of the shops in the area got 1-2 cases each, and sold them for less than the brewery did at release day.

I have been able to try their Short Pump Saison, Three Chopt and Magic Beaver. I have not been able to try Enlightened Despot, but would love to track that down if given the opportunity. I would also love to track down one of their snifters, if anyone is able to grab me one!

I actually have been offering them up in trades for out of area shelf stuff and other BAs have been interested in trying out their stuff. There is definitely starting to be more and more of a buzz about their beers.

I meant distribute to NoVA. Never saw it at Norms, WF Fairfax, etc. So, I was pleasantly surprised when I found out the Bourbon Three Chopt was in stores up here.

Yeah, I'm 99% positive it was. And, Enlightened Despot was released March 1. The Estate Hop Ale had been distributed up here. I remember being disappointed that ED didn't make it. I imagine we'll see it next year, but with greater demand and maybe an increased price. I think demand for their limited releases will increase exponentially in the next few years.

damn I don't usually go out on work nights but if they're pouring Enlightened Despot I might have to make it out for that. I've heard that place is cool too, I've been wanting to check it out.

Been wanting to try some LCCB for awhile now but being in the part of VA that I am in I don't get that opportunity. If anyone has an extra enlightened despot and is interested in trading it let me know! Will definitely make it worth your while!

I tried Nuclear Nugget on Friday and thought it was ok. Similar to Hopslam with out the hop bite since they both use honey. Personally I wouldn't want a whole bottle to myself but I wouldn't turn down a glass of it.
