So I have never been to Los Angeles...and in two weeks I will be in Long Beach for a new job training for a week. What craft beer bars should I visit? (I don't care about shops..just bars) I wont have a car so will have to taxi..so looking stay in Long Beach/Belmont..maybe Seal beach at furthest. Thanks!!
Beachwood BBQ & Brewing. Maaaybe Congregation Ale House if you want to mix it up, which is right next door by the way.
There are several places to get craft on draft. The 2 mentioned. The stache. The red leprechaun. Simmzys. Quinns. Rileys. Tavern on 2. 4th street vine. Bo beau. Rebel bite. Michaels. Brix. Federal bar.
Thanks guys! Ok, so I know this has probably been asked a million times, but any of these spots likely to of Pliny on draft or no chance?
As a Belmont Shore resident I can attest to the quality of the above mentioned. Zimmzys has the most taps on 2nd St and often have the best beers when available like Alpine, Russian River, El Segundo, Ballast Point, FW etc etc. Good gastro pub fare as well. We love Quinns, just a few doors N off 2nd St on Nieto. Its a sleeper and has a dozen quality taps and bottles to consider, I actually bought bottles of KRBC Citra there last year. Have fun, lots to see and do,but most definitely get to one or both Beachwoods.
both beachwood and congregation have pliny on tap somewhat sporadically/regularly. Beachwood is your place. They make several IPAs that are every bit as good as pliny. Make sure you try their own brews, but they also have a ton of great beers on tap regularly as well.
Yes going to joe jost is like a right of passage! Ice cold schooner and a joes special and pickled eggs. You should definitely stop in there
Yeah seriously, if you are going to spend an entire freaking week in LB, you gotta make time for some schooners at Joe Jost's ... F*ck the hipsters pimping their craft beer temples (although Beachwood is another must), drink schooners at Joe Jost's and of course, buy the navy pocket t-shirt on your way out
Winkdaddy, I was just in NYC Midtown Weds night (training Thur morning at Newark airport). My second 2nd time pub crawling in the city. I hit Fool's Gold, Cooper's Craft & Kitchen and Jerry's No 43 all in about 4 hours. We got a late start. I read here about the Green Diamond DIPA, All Green Everything and Hop Showers from Other Half Brewing Co. http://otherhalfbrewing.com/?age-verified=d897ea2afc http://www.beeradvocate.com/community/threads/other-half-brewing.185637/page-7#post-2599699 I was able to try Green Diamond at Fool's Gold. Unbelievably delicious! I would put this up against most any of our west coast ipa's. Had 3 pours of Green Diamond before heading off to Cooper's. I probably should of just stayed there the rest of the evening as the other two pubs didn't really have much to offer as far as East Coast IPA's. By the time we got to Jerry's All Everything Green was tapped out. Like I told Hillary (bartender at Fool's) if your ever in SoCal (LA/OC) make sure you stop in Long Beach's Beachwood BBQ & Brewing. A must stop for all craft beer lovers. You will not be disappointed. The other places mentioned above are good stops also. But you will need to take public transportation (which is terrible compared to NYC), taxi or Uber. Beachwood also has their original restaurant in Seal Beach which I think is another stop to see and taste their world class guest beers. Look for their http://beachwoodbbq.com/hopcam.html to see whats on tap which is updated every 20 minutes or so or when they tap a new beer. If your looking for Pliny a good chance one of the 2 locations will have it. Both Beachwood locations are closed on Mondays. Not sure what your flight plan to LA is but I am looking for a growler of Green Diamond. I work at LAX and live near Beachwood BBQ Seal Beach. I was hoping to bring back a growler of Green Diamond to share with others here but the brewery is only open Fri-Sun. I had a Thur flight back to LAX. Shoot me a beer mail if your interested in a trade or wouldn't mind bringing me a growler for $. Or just to grab a beer or three at Beachwood. No worries if not. I'm sure I'll be back to Manhattan/Brooklyn sooner than later. Lots of great pubs and great public transportation. Have fun during your stay in Long Beach.
didn't want to make a new thread Long Beach is going off http://laist.com/2016/01/29/beer_belly_long_beach.php
I live in Belmont Shore and can endorse all the above. Riley's is a hidden gem and has a great tap list and mean burgers. But by all means make sure you get to the Beachwood brewery on 3rd in downtown LB,you will not be disappointed, from the house taps to the guest taps to the food its sublime. Cheers
I'm thinking of spending a few nights in the Long Beach area in March, just for something to do. Go grab some beers at the places mentioned in this thread, definitely drive over to Smog City, etc. Where would be a good neighborhood if I wanted to look into an AirBnb? Is driving anywhere terrible?
Belmont heights, belmont shore, and los altos are all great areas. A little bit of a drive from downtown but still very easy if you have a car. Getting to LA during weekday's can be difficult, so avoid going during rush hour. Going to Orange County is much easier and more enjoyable, IMO.
Here's my thoughts if its strictly long beach and easy access/uber since I don't know where you will be staying. Downtown LB (take the bus 1.25 each way or uber): 1. Beachwood BBQ and brewing 2. Select beer 3. Congregation alehouse Belmont Shore/seal beach (bus or uber): 1. Simmzys 2. Quinns 3. Beachwood BBQ (seal beach) 4. Tavern on 2 5. I guess if you want a nice view Belmont Brewing, but beers are meh Heres a sampling of good food as well (want more just ask): Beachwood bbq the Breakfast bar the Attic Working class kitchen Simmzys Pho Hong Phat Michael's Pizzeria Sampling of places for cocktails: Blind Donkey Federal bar Saint & Second Bo Beau Hope this helps and let me know if you want any more suggestions.
