I will be near the Newark airport next week for 1 night and have decided to visit Lower Manhattan. I am planning to take the AirTran/train over to the World Trade Center area to check out the 911 Memorial. Planning on getting there late afternoon so I won't have much time for anything else but to grab some food and hopefully some good beer. Is there one or two places that you guys could recommend. I was in Mid Manhattan last October and stopped in Vahalla & a very cool beer store with taps near the Theater district (can't think of the name right now). Don't mind taking the subway to the Penn station area. This trip I want to concentrate on the Lower Manhattan area. Looking for local east coast IPA's (Troegs, Founders, etc, etc). 2 places close by each other would be cool. Not making this an all nighter as I have a work related training class back at Newark the next morning. Thanks again for any and all help.

If you want to focus on the Lower Manhattan area, there aren't as many options compared to Midtown Manhattan. Here are two places right near the WTC and are only a block apart from each other:
If you want to go to a place that has a really good selection, I would recommend taking the subway up to Rattle N Hum, which is near Penn Station and NJ Transit trains that go back to NJ. If you're planning on taking the PATH back to NJ, you could also take the subway uptown a few stops and hit places that are close to the other PATH line that runs back to NJ:
If you are looking for any particular breweries/styles, I would look at the websites of the bars or beermenus.com to see what's on-tap the day you are visiting and help make your decision or where to go.

It sounds like the beer store with taps that you went to in the Theater District last time was Beer Culture.

Doing some research on the provided list. Rattle & Hum is for sure a go to stop for me. But I'm stuck on a 2nd stop. And of all the mentioned places which one would you recommend to eat? They all look great on the food menu and the beer menu is a no brainer. I want to drink IPA's and stouts that I cannot find or ever had in SoCal. So which place to eat?

Also from a dollars and cents point of view, Gingerman is considerably cheaper than Rattle N Hum when it comes to beer prices.

Look for beers from Other Half. They are making great IPAS. Use beer menus and look for Green Diamonds, Hop Showers, or All Green Everything. You can probably find their regular IPA, but the three I mentioned are much better and worth seeking out.

Yes, it's not much cheaper in the SoCal area. Toronado SF along with Zeitgiest in SF has great prices for beers. Day old pliny for 4 bucks a proper pint at Toronado's. LA/OC & most San Diego is high. I can still get Alpine pints at their brewpub for $3.50 during happy hour and I consider their IPA's the best. I expect to pay a little more while in the Big Apple. Thats why I want to narrow it down to 2 or 3 places that has great beers for the prices they charge. I thought Beer Culture was pretty cheap, but I want to check out places I haven't been to yet.

Near the World Trade Center area you can try Clinton Hall. They serve food. They also have a flux capacitor for the beer. Prices are high.

Much better (in my opinion), is the Rattle N Hum / Ginger Man combo already suggested. I think Rattle N Hum is probably the better option for food. I've eaten at Ginger Man more often but their food menu is limited. It would take a pretty jaded drinker to not find something enjoyable at those two spots.

As mentioned, use beermenus to eliminate some spots since you are looking for something specific to drink.

Have another question. . . . .can I bring my SS growler from California and have it filled anyplace that fills growlers in NYC?The Other Half sounds like they have some very interesting IPA's I wouldn't mind bringing back with me. Thanks.
