After bringing home cases from Denver several times, Melvin Brewing out of Wyoming is finally hitting the Chicago area! Their IPA's are outstanding, and stores should be seeing some today. Notables are 2x4 and Citradamus, but they are all great!!
Had a few of their brews on tap a week or two ago here in Ohio, was very impressed, expecting much less with my experience in states that are less vibrant on the craft beer scene. Lots of dank, aromatic, spiciness not quite West coast but not East either. Good middle ground.
I think these would be a bigger hit for me a couple years ago when I would've killed for a 10% IPA in a 12oz can. The 2x4s I had last spring were too boozy for where I'm at now though. I wouldn't mind sampling the others though.
Hopefully they leave their sexual misconduct behind... https://www.beeradvocate.com/commun...employee-accused-of-sexual-misconduct.563186/
This was a topic of discussion in the Northwest and Mountain forums back in March. Here’s a quote from @MelvinBrewing_2x4
I liked 2x4 at Falling Rock Taphouse this summer so I was happy to get 2x4, IPA, and Citradamus today. I’m ready for some classic IPA’s with the weather turning next week. The cans I got are 2-3 weeks old but we’ll see if they are able to keep beers fresh in this market
I overheard the guys at Binny's today talk a bunch of shit about these beers. Saying how piney they are. Just for historical record I should try some but as mentioned previously I'll be in Denver next week so I'll try to try them there first.
2x4 reminded me of a Three Floyd’s bomber like a Permanent Funeral or a War Mullet type of beer. The 12oz format should be nice for these
From the few offerings I've had, yes, they are piney. But what's wrong with that? I've enjoyed their beers.
Are they even hazy? My understanding is that this was the most egregious incident, but that the employees of the brewery have quite a reputation and that there have been other examples of harassment as well as generally douchey/dickish behavior. Add in the history of making light of sexual assault as a company and I really don't think this statement did all that much.
One of the nice things about their IPAs is that they have a bit longer shelf life than some of the current trendy ones with a lot more delicate hop flavors. This is a tough market, so I'll be curious to see how they fare as well. I met their founder Jeremy awhile ago, it's not a secret or anything too unique but he explained that since their original location and production brewery is in a sparsely populated area, their growth is entirely dependent on shipping to other markets. A couple years ago he claimed this was done in a carefully considered way (though I'm sure they all say that) to ensure they're not wasting time/effort. They used their 2x4 Day events partly as a way to test interest and roll out accordingly.
2x4>IPA>Citradamus for me. Happy I got all 3 though. Will revisit 2x4 regularly if fresh. Anyone had the Columbus IPA (Forgot the name. Your Favorite?)
Having the Citradamus right now, & finding it...unpleasant. Orange soda, mild baking soda & faint burnt caramel flavors. Hoping the 2x4 I grabbed will be better, but I'm guessing that this one will be shelf-turd city in this market.
They do. There is an unreported-on incident involving a fairly prominent beer industry person who is a close friend of mine. It's not my story to tell, but suffice it to say they will receive absolutely 0% of my support in this market.
